LONG sad story, please read :(

Okay so a couple years ago I decided to start collecting the limited edition disney dvd's after playing Kingdom Hearts and remembering all the characters and storylines of the great Disney movies. So I began collecting and immediately found Snow White which I was happy to find because it had already stopped production. For weeks I called many places and finally got Sleeping Beauty still with the slip-cover, this is like my favorite disney movie so i was really excited. I then purchased Beauty and the Beast from ebay for 25.00 because I couldnt find it in stores.
One night, my cousin and her daughter camer over to my house, her daughter is 3 and loves the disney movies. My cousin then asked if they could borrow Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast. I was hesitant but said yes.
months have passed and I recently remembered that she still had my DVD's. When I went over to my cousins house I asked her about them and she helped me look for them. All we found was the Sleeping Beauty disc 1
I didnt want to be upset because im a 17 year old guy and I love my cousins. But now Snow White is impossible to find. Beauty and the Beast is like 90.00 on ebay, and Sleeping Beauty is expensive too!
Any ideas on what I could do?

Have you tried any other places online? I have occasionally found out-of-print or otherwise hard-to-find DVDs at one of two websites:
http://half.ebay.com or at amazon.com through their second-party retailer links.
Matter of fact, I just did a quick search on half.com and there are some new copies of both BatB AND Snow White available for $20 or less plus shipping. Just go to their main site and type in the title of the movie you want in the search box, and click on the option it brings up as a DVD. I've ordered stuff from there before and the retailers they work with are pretty reliable. I definitely recommend it.

That's why I never lend out DVDs (and several other things) to anybody, no matter how much I like and/or love them. It's unfortunate, but alot of people just don't know how to treat stuff properly.
However, I do sometimes lend out backup copies of my DVDs that I've made.

I bought both B&tB and Snow White at Gamestop in great condition for $12.99 and $16.99 respectively. Check out gamestop.com and when you get to the page of the DVD you are looking for, type in your zip code to see if there are any near you. I spent a few weeks doing this every so often and found a bunch of DVDs I was looking for incl B&tB, Snow White and the Fantasia Anthology among others.
Goodluck! I really feel for you. It's hard saying no to people who want to borrow your DVDs (esp family) but it's even harder when they loose them / have no respect for them!

that's actually a really good idea!!
The place I use to get cheap, used disney dvds is Plan 9. I was able to find TLK, after it had been OOP for around 6 months for 9.99, as well as SLEEPING BEAUTY, brand new (unfortuately, without the slipcover) for 18.99 (again, long after it had been OOP). I also spotted a brand new fantasia dvd selling for 29.99 about a month ago. So Plan 9 can be another option for you, if Gamestop dosn't have the DVD's you're looking for.

Checking out that site really is a great idea! I've been mourning the loss of my Batb disc 1 for over a year....it is so hard to find, maybe I'll finally be able to track one down!

Let them know the price. Those who borrow something implicitly accept a certain responsibility.

This happened to me with some of my VHS Disney movies, years ago. I lent them to my boyfriend's nieces and nephews, and although I got them back eventually - one was missing the case altogether, and some of the other cases were extremely beat up.
I never borrowed any videos/DVD's to anybody ever again. Nobody respects stuff that they didn't have to buy.
I'm sorry you lost your DVD's. Unfortunately, you might end up having to pay a lot to buy them back. I just found Sleeping Beauty on E-bay with the slipcover (new)....but I had to pay $45 for it. Good luck!

I thought I'd just mention that regular ebay is NOT exactly the best place to buy out-of-print DVDs. You're much better off looking on one of the discount websites instead of there. A few have been mentioned here in previous posts, and several of them offer overstocked copies of OOP DVDs for less than MSRP. I usually only proceed with ordering ANYthing from ebay when I'm 100% sure that it's not available anywhere else at a better price.

And not to mention the risk you have of buying a
bootleg copy for $50, or buying a damaged dvd set...you can never know for sure what's being sold on ebay until you have it in your hands....
So, I agree with everyone else: if you choose to use ebay, do it with caution!

I think e-Bay would be your best bet.
I used it only once (indirectly because I'm still under-age) but it's really easy.
I really really really feel for you and am terribly sympathetic. Moreover it's worse because these are hard to find DVDs. Personally I own BATB and have a really damaged copy of Snow White which I bought shop soiled for almost the same price of a new DVD. It's so scratched it doesn't play in most DVD Players. It only plays in REALLY tolerant players.
With that in mind I really understand your loss. I'm 17 aswell and am always lending my DVDs to my married brother. He shows them to his 2 year old child. I always tell him to take care of them. What annoys me is that he ends up playing the DVD Discs about twice a day for about a month. I hope it doesn't wear the disc. Some of them are brand new.
If you ever lend your DVDs make sure that they're well taken care of.
Good Luck

Well, it's possible to be somewhat "subtle" about it - ask them what they think the logical and reasonable solution would be. Could they really come up with anything but...?

I never lend my DVD's to ANYONE I always keep them either in my room so no one can get them. Or when I take them with me, I always make sure that they are in my eyesite. If I were you, I would never lend my DVD's to anyone.

I still have a DVD that was loaned out over 4 years ago that was never returned. My cousin who at the time was 3 thought it was his and I didn't have the heart to take it back from him. Last time I was at their house I saw the DVD, and it looked rough (the case anyway). I'm sure it was scratched up as well if I had taken it out of the case. They tend to just leave DVDs on top of the TV with no case, or stack them up near the DVD player. Its wierd... Anyway I went ahead and replaced it in my collection. Right now I don't loan out any DVDs.
Sorry to hear about your DVDs.

Hopefully you can get them replaced for a good price.

I now make back-up copies of my dvds and if I lend it out it is the backup, not the original. The other reason is my wife does day care at home and the kids keep going in the movies so this stopped that

Sorry to hear what happened, especially since SB is so hard to find these days (while I've suddenly seen BATB popping up in GameStops everywhere for $12.99).
Anyways, no one in my family (immediate or extended) really borrow from my collection because there wouldn't be a lot of titles that interest them. Usually they only borrow to see the bonus features, or because they don't want to rent from blockbuster or netflix. But when they *do* borrow from me, I make sure to stress several things (which I think everyone should do if they lend out their movies to people):
1. DVD's are much less durable than a VHS. While a VHS can be left sitting on top of the box, a DVD can't. It must never be touched anywhere except the edges. The simplest scratch can sometimes ruin it forever.
2. DVD's are not toys, frisbees, decorative things for the wall, and certainly not a coaster. It's a very delicate piece of plastic that is hard to replace at times.
3. I don't have any kind of rental fee, but I do tell them how much the DVD cost me, and how much I'd expect from them if the DVD were damaged or misplaced by them (the price is usually higher for my OOP titles). It seems rather rude, but hey, if they damaged a disc from Blockbuster they'd have to pay to replace it. I don't see why they think borrowing from a family member would be an exception.
4. I have open windows on lending things out. I trust that they *know* the DVD isn't their's and that they'll return it once they're done. It's an honor system. Currently, I've got 4 DVD's that were borrowed by my aunt (Nurse Betty, Ned Kelly, Sin City, and Virginia's Run), and at a party she told me she was already finished with them but never had a chance to stop by. Coincidentally, at that same party, just when I was about to go home, my other aunt takes a look at the DVDs and asks if she can borrow them. So now they're lent out again, and I'm due to get them back this Easter. Also, even though I have open windows on how long they can borrow a DVD, I keep a log of how long they have had it, simply so that if it reaches a point where they've had it longer than they need it, I call them just to see what's up.
5. The only DVDs I don't lend out to my relatives (only to my brother and sister) are my Disney DVDs, simply because Disney always costs more to replace, especially with them trigger-happy to put things in the vault.

Becareful of these on half.com the cheap ones are usually only 1 disc and there are a lot of asian imports.. You need to really read the wording..
They are slick how they do it..

Thus far I've had pretty reliable results on half.com. I usually only buy from sellers that have high ratings and the ones that have the most comprehensive descriptions of what they're selling.
The biggest "deal" I've had with them thus far has been that the DVD set of A Hard Day's Night that I ordered from them was the Canadian release, which had both English and French labeling, but I thought that was pretty cool. It's R1 and has the exact same features as a damaged set that I bought in a store. The one I went out and bought in person was the damaged one. Go figure
Personally, I'm more comfortable ordering from sites like this as opposed to ebay. Of course, being careful wherever you buy online is key.
