yeah i get to be the first to welcome somebody! welcome outoftimejedi. o.k. let me see if i can answer your question.
pinocchio laser disc had a 45 minute documentary about the making of the film. the current dvd out, only has a cropped 5 minute featurette (more like a preview length). i'm not sure if there was any other difference besides the books and artwork that came with each. both are available at used retailers (i.e. ebay and stuff), but sometimes i like to go to amazon.com and click on the new and used link by the wanted title and get alist of sometimes new dvds for used prices.
however, this title was recently added to the platinum schedule list. this means that an even better than the laser disc version is in the works. its release date however, is sketchy at best. disney has announced that they will release 2 platinums a year, but neglected to let anyone know when this will take into effect or even suggest a tentative schedule. this means that you could be waiting for a very long time before an awesome version of pinocchio is available.
i as well do not have this disc yet, but my philosophy is, "if i find it cheap somewhere (meaning under $20) then i'm definitely going to pick it up fast......i really like this movie"
the descretion is in your court. until disney announces any info as to the release of this film, it may very well be a Lllooooooooooooooong time.

We're definitely going to see a better Pinocchio DVD at some point, and better than even the English Special Edition released earlier this year (or was it last year?). Whether it will be 2007, or later, or before that...I don't think anyone knows, including Disney.
Anyway, I'm sure it will get deluxe treatment a la Snow White and Fantasia, but it may require patience. I'm glad I have the Gold Collection DVD as it's my favorite Disney film through...well the late '80s and early '90s anyway.
Welcome to the forum!

I have an old vhs recording which will serve me until the PE release. I have a policy against double dipping when it comes to dvd's, Ive done it so many times unintentionally that I now make an effort to stay alert when it comes to future releases so that I dont spend money on the same item twice. I have at least 20 brand new dvd's that have maybe been watched once, if even, that Im left to sell because of this. It's really aggravating...
