Can someone shed light, or give an opinion, as to why Sleeping Beauty was released on DVD as "Special Edition," and not "Platinum Edition?"

They didn't plan it, at the time, to be available only for a limited time, I guess...?

I can't see why they release SB in a Special Edition if they were planning to release it on a Platinum, because this movie will get 2 releases on dvd and both on a 2 disc set and then other movies like The Hunchback of Notre Dame or Hercules don't have one special release with restored animation, and I don't have anything against Sleeping Beauty, it is one of my favorite movies, but I don't see the reason of why they are going to release it twice and both on 2 disc sets.

What else is dumb is that since Disney likes to call Platinum Editions Special Editions also and have it say Special Edition on the spine rather than Platinum Edition, When a Platinum is released both editions will be called Special Edition when displayed on a shelf with other DVDs

The very simple answer is that it wasn't one of Disney's top 10 selling videos, and therefore it wasn't initially part of the Platinum collection. It was added to the line in May of 2003, but by then its September 2003 DVD release was already pencilled in as simply a Special Edition. Plus it wouldn't make much sense to have Platinum Editions in successive months.

Exactly. Take in consideration Lady and the Tamp, the first of the LI releases to get a PE release. I'm amazed on how Disney pretends the first edition didn't even existed:

"Now... for the first time ever on a 2 Disc DVD".

As Luke and everyone knows here on the site, there are ALL the reasons in the world to upgrade the LI if you had it.... but I'm against of Disney thinking people are dumb.

I don't have Sleeping Beauty on DVD so I'll pick it up when the PE eventually comes along. I never got around to buying the Special Edition.

But at the same time they are telling the truth. After all, it is the first time ever it's being released on a two-disc DVD.

They did the same with Mary Poppins. They advertised it as "FIRST TIME EVER...on two-disc DVD". I think they did the same for Pocahontas 10AE.

Although the 2 Disc Special Edition Sleeping Beauty is a wonderful collection, please keep in mind that in 2010 when it is re-released, DVD's
will be as trendy as VHS videos.

It will only be available on Blu-Ray, with a few older persons still trying to get it on DVD.

Sleeping Beauty Platinum Edition will be beautiful on Blu-Ray.

I don't think DVDs would be as obsolete as VHS in such a short span of 4 years. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD haven't even hit the market so discussing the death of DVD seems a bit premature. I'm sure the three formats will be living comfortably on movie shelves for years before DVD starts to look old.

If the two new formats are adopted as anything more than niche markets, that is, which is still to be determined. In any event, even if Blu-Ray and HD-DVD were to launch in a few weeks and catch on as quickly as DVD (which was the home media most quickly accepted by the public to date), DVD would still be as prevalent in 2010 as VHS cassettes were in 2001, which was still a few years away from obseletion.

Well Disney is smart...they will always have there slogan for thier movies... "FOR THE FIRST TIME". When BLU-RAY comes out it will be FOR THE FIRST TIME on BLU-RAY DVD...

I didn't know about the "top 10" reasoning, and understand that now. However, if it is true that Disney didn't "upgrade" the edition because of a prior release announcement (if I'm understanding Luke's remarks), we could remember other times when products went through a change -- a delayed release-- like "Dr. Syn, Alias The Scarecrow," "Secrets, Stories & Magic...," and Wave 3 of the Treasures. And the revising and printing of covers and inserts ("Special" to "Platinum") don't add too much pain to a production schedule in this electronic age.

SB SE is past history now. I just wondered about its reasoning. This 2-disk edition is jam-packed with great contents -- everything I wanted and more!

I think even thought I love the 2-disc edition, I'm going to double-dip for the platinum edition for the following reasons:
1. It's my favorite Disney Film
2. I would like to see it with that platinum banner
3. The cover art can only be better

Well, once you've got them on the shelf, they ARE both in effect "Special Editions", or whatever. The important difference between a "PE" and another "SE" is that the "PE" is intended to be available for a limited time only. That's important BEFORE you buy it, because it says: "Buy it NOW - not later."

But are you sure it will be in blu-ray and not on HD-DVD?

by the time it comes around again people will be willing to double dip. i'm sure there will be more to it than the Platinum Banner and new cover art, which would be amazing considering the treatment the film recieved at a special edition. i can't really imagine whatelse they could add.

I think content-wise, Disney will probably add more video features. The current Sleeping Beauty DVD is excellent, but in terms of "making of" type of video features, there's only about half an hour's worth. Considering how Disney seems to have abandoned audio commentaries for pre-80s films, I think Disney will take take the interview sessions from both the commentary and the brief featurettes and place them within the main "making of" to create a "new" one-hour documentary. They're all from the same interview sessions, anyway (the commentary and brief featurettes basically seem to be outtakes that for whatever reason weren't used in the 16-minute "making of").

I think there'll also be some sort of general feature on the DVD since each Platinum has one (Disney Through the Decades, The Story Behind the Story, Disney & Animals, Alan Menken: Reinassance Man, Disney's Nine Old Men, and The Art of Storyboards). In the case of Sleeping Beauty, there'll probably be a feature about backgrounds in various Disney films, or about art design in general.

Besides all of that, I can't see what else they could do.
