The black suit is because Venom is in the movie.

I really have big doubts about Venom having a part. While it's true Venom has good visuals which will look stunning on film, he really is a shallow, one-note, gimmick villain.

If you look at the comics, after Venom's first apperance, all the other stories, including the upteen Limited Series, do nothing to expand his limited motivation convincingly. Because, when the character was devised, he was nothing but a "kwel" gimmick villain with tissue thin motivation. Even Marvel knew this, and created Carnage, a character who at least has more narrative possibilities.

Add to this the fact that the 3rd film is also to feature The Sandman, The Hobgoblin (according to the video-game preview, which will be Harry Osborn I guess), Gwen Stacy and (reportedly, although these speculations seem to have been dropped now) Felicia Hardy (aka The Black Cat) I can only see disaster for the 3rd film.

The 1st and 2nd films (especially the 2nd) worked so well, because they allowed the villain and the villain's motivations and character to be explored, while at the same time contrasting it with Peter Parker's. Remember how we all felt moved by Dr Octopus' sacrifice at the end of Spider-Man 2? Can you really see the 3rd film reaching similar emotional heights when it appears to be crammed full of characters?

Now we have a film with a "non-entity" villain with as much depth as a shallow puddle (for crying out loud, Venom repeatedly talks about "eating brains" in the comics - great charactisation. NOT), plus 2 more villains, plus other fan-pleasing comicbook characters.

I can't help but think of how the mighty Batman films fell from grace, once Warner Bros and DC became more interested in cramming them with various villains, vehicles, suits and gimmicks - just so they could sell more toys.

I hope I'm wrong about Spider-Man 3.

Netty, I think you should give Raimi a chance. Most comic book characters seem to be single-noted (Superman rings a bell), but on film they're given dimension. I trust Raimi knows what he's doing, since he's a big Spiderman fan. I also think the Venom can be more than just a weird villian with the proper treatment. And on a different note, I'm loving the concept art. Can't wait!

Thank God for the explanation (I'm not so into comic books) because I was wondering what the black suit was about, a statue? a clone? Halle Berry?

They probably wont just bust out with Venom right away. His buildup will probably be one of the side stories (and I say at/near the end, Spidey gets the symbiote (hence the black suit) to set up Spidey 4. Sandman and Hobgoblin (or GGII :p) will probably be the main villian. I really don't know much about Gwen Stacy (besides her being another of Parker's love interests), but I guarantee you that if Dunst resigns to play MJ again, they will scrap whatever they have going with her by the beginning of the 4th movie. And remember, Black Cat was rumored for Spidey 2 (leaked by Ms. Dunst...IIRC) so anytime the name "Black Cat" is brought up, I'm pretty skeptical :p

Thats a nice pic, but it doesn't look like the black suit. The black suit had no web lines at all.

I'm still not sure about Venom. If he is in there I see it happening more like it did in Ultimate Spider-man. Instead of an alien, the suit was created as an experiment (as a cure for cancer or something like that). In the main Marvel comics Spider-man found the black suit during Secret Wars #8, and it was then years before we saw Venom in Amazing Spider-man #300. Although I think Venom had some cameos leading up to his main appearance in Amazing #298/299. During that time Spider-man found out about the suit, got rid of it, etc... The whole bell tower/church scene where Peter gets rid of the suit using the noise from the bells (was shown in the 90s cartoon) takes place during Web of Spider-man #1.

Gwen was Peters original love interest. She was killed by the Green Goblin (Norman) after being thrown from a bridge (Amazing Spider-man #121 I think).

I still think they should stick with one main villian. The other movies worked so well because of one villian and great stories.

But indications are, there won't be a Spider-Man 4.

That poster is really cool

Never read any spidey comics before but the movies are awesome.

I heard a rumor that they were only makin 3 movies then i also heard they were makin 6 :o

Personally I think they should only make 4 Spiderman movies

Cause In my opinion these are how the stories I think work

Like the first two only delt with a few problems.

So maybe in Spidey 3 the main focuses could be: The new villian (just one), Peter wonderin if he should get engaged to MJ, Harry dealing with he knows who spiderman is, dealin with his friendship with peter, and shows him getting ready to become the next villan.

and In Spidey 4 they should worry abou: Peter and MJ gettin married and Harry as the new villan.

The teaser poster is cool, although it looks like it could either be the black suit or the normal suit just in dramatic lighting. I think it's a little weird to see the poster for a movie almost a year and a half before it comes out. And I understand what Netty's saying about how they are seemingly putting far too many villains and other various characters in, but I think it could be pulled off well.

Just because I'll take any opportunity to encourage people to read the reviews that I spend many hours toiling on, you can read more about Venom (at least his '90s animation incarnation) in my 2005 DVD review of Spider-Man: The Venom Saga: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/spider-man-venomsaga.html

That said, I really need to see Spider-Man 2. The first one was one of my favorite movies this decade and by most accounts, the sequel is as good or better. I probably ought to just buy it blind the next time it's on sale for $10.

I wouldnt. I hear they're talking about a Spidey 2.5 DVD. That said, Fry's Electronics has an ad for $10 SM2 DVD (newspaper today). Of course, if you dont have a Fry's Electronics around, that's pretty moot

Where did you hear that? Last I heard, Sam Raimi said in an interview that there would be an "endless" amount of Spider-man films and that they would never "end". While I don't really believe that, I don't think they'd stop at just 3! There are alot more villians to introduce!

If you haven't seen Spider-Man 2 I would go out and get it asap Luke. Its a great movie and one of the best super hero movies that has been made.

I've seen it lately sometimes for $5 - $10. They are planning a 2.5 DVD, but it might get held off until Spider-Man 3 is released.

As far as movies after 3 I've heard that the actors and director are only planning on 3 movies. So I guess if they don't come back there will be a new cast and maybe new director. That is if they do more than 3 films.

Back on the Venom thing. Yeah I guess you could call him one of Spideys big villians, but there are a lot of other classic villians I would have liked to see before Venom. I was really hoping to see Lizard in 3. Might not work as a main villian, but he could be a secondary villian.

Last I heard was all the actors were contracted for 3, they will make 3, and then the films take a rest for a few years longer than usual and then make more with an all-new cast, probably rebooting from the start again.

Venom sucks. He really does. Personally, I would like to see Mysterio in a film (imagine how much fun they could have with special effects with a special effects based villain!). The fishbowel on the head would be optional.

I would like to see Rhino or Vulture, maybe the Sinister 6 would be cool to, except Doc Ock is dead

Oh- so glad to hear that Felicia/Black Cat will be in the movie.

Wonder if King Pin will ever make it in the Spiderman movies... I'd like to see him, and the Lizard in & if they make future Spiderman flix.
