Anyone else watch this Disney Channel Original Movie yesterday? High School Musical, easily, now my favorite "DCOM", while filled with different plotholes, was incredibly well done with fabulous singing and unbelieveable choreography! I even purchased the soundtrack, today.

What are your thoughts?

Oh yeah it will be on DVD soon I only saw towards the ending of the movie but I'm wanting to watch it tonight because tonight is the Sing Along version of it!

So far i've only seen the last hour, but it's pretty good. The music is cool and the dance moves are great!

I saw the movie the night that it had premiered. I thought it was done very well, I can see why Entertainment Weekly gave it a B+ (One of the highest for a DCOM) My mother was laughing out loud throughout the entire movie! I can see why everybody likes it so much. Good movie, but not my favorite DCOM.

Oy, where to start...

I was watching this DCOM simply because Kram and Jane wanted me to tape it for them, so I figured I might as well watch it too just to see what the big deal was. I had seen most of the previews for it and assumed it'd be just another "sports guy goes against the grain and to the shock of his buddies auditions for a musical, but in the end, they're all happy endings...". Well, that's what it was.

But anyways, my thoughts...

Kenny Ortega. The choreographer for Dirty Dancing. The director and choreographer for Newsies. Gotta give him props for taking a paycheck and doing this movie.

I hated that stupid song about basketball (where they're practicing and suddenly they start dancing). I wish every copy of it would be placed in a big pile and they burn it in a great big ritualistic bonfire. The choreography was decent, the song just plain sucked and reeked of teenybopper quality. The other songs were nice (but forgettable). Unfortunately, I hate this song so much and it's the only one still stuck in my head.

The drama teacher (Darbus?) overacted, which is probably the way they wanted the role. Because, as everyone knows, every drama teacher at the high school worships the theatre, hates cell phones, and must wear glasses and have scarves at cockeyed angles.

The social circles could have been improved. I mean, honestly, who thought it'd be a good idea to make all the cliques crystal clear? The brains, the jocks, the skaters, the theater kids, etc. Of course, it makes us know which extra belongs to which clique, since all the characters are so one-note and have only one kind of personality each that you may confuse a skater for a jock if he wears a hoodie.

I have yet to encounter a school where the high school musical was written and composed by a student.

Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, and Ryan. Four somewhat talented teenagers. Playing four somewhat bearable teenagers. Sharpay and Ryan were laughable as the theatre-holics. Did they all do their original singing? If so, Troy should've gotten a voice double.

The ending (when the cliques all suddenly become color coordinated and have a great big finale number in the gym), is probably the corniest ending I've seen for a musical.

The best song dance sequence was probably the one in the cafeteria, where you've got smart lyrics about how cliques try and keep their clique from changing and all that, and how being normal for them is being the same and not being different, etc.

I like how it's called "High School Musical", and you have musical instances during regular action, along with actual musicla numbers. But wouldn't it have made sense to have actually seen the musical that they wre auditioning for in the first place? Or are they saving that for a sequel? (God help us...)

And finally...

WHAT KIND OF NAME IS SHARPAY?

In the end, here's my ratings:

Story: 6/10
Acting: 6/10
Dancing: 7/10
Singing: 5/10

Overall Average: 6.2/10

Escapay

I really liked it. Makes me almost like musicals again. The songs and the actors were good. Some of the stereotypical plot points were very small and werent overdone so it was forgivable. There was a moment in the movie where I thought the whole story was gonna go "Grease" but thank god it didnt.

I really enjoyed this DCOM and want to buy the soundtrack. This is going to date me, but I thought Zac Efron (Troy) looked so much like David Cassidy in "The Partridge Family". The songs were much in the "Grease" style, and "Stick to the Status Quo" is stuck in my head right now.

Darbus was my favorite adult character. While she was somewhat over the top, she reminded me of some of the teachers I had in high school. I laughed out loud when Ryan thought he and Sharpay were being "Punk'd" and said, "Maybe we'll get to meet Ashton!" In fact, I laughed at most of the scenes with Ryan and Sharpay.

Some of the continuity problems bugged me. Troy wore #14 in most of the basketball scenes, but in a couple of them, he wore a #10 jersey. The grand finale, "We're All in this Together", presumably took place right after the Wildcats won the championship game. All of the players were still wearing their uniforms, except Troy, who changed into the white t-shirt and sweats that he wore to the audition. He wouldn't have had enough time to change. Also, Gabriella appeared in the finale with a red party-type dress, even though she had to go back to the academic decathlon after the audition. Those are minor points, though.

I enjoyed the movie overall and will buy the DVD when it comes out. Oh, and I agree with Escapay: What kind of name is Sharpay?!?

I LOVED this movie. It is now my favorite DCOM. The singing was great, and it had wonderful songs. I downloaded the album from itunes lol. I am a junior in High School, and this movie reminded me so much of school especially the cafeteria scene where all the cliques sit at diffrent tables lol. I never knew that Zac Efron sang. Was he singing, or was that a voice over?

I also agree with Escapay--What kind of name is Sharpay?!?. I guess they wanted to give her a Diva name.

I'm sorry maybe its because I am 28, but I thought this was one of the worst DCOM I have seen. My wife teaches music and has performed in several musicals and even she thought it was terrible. I can seen why younger children and maybe even the pre-teen crowd may like it, but The Disney Channel really needs to improve in the quality of their movies.

Is this going to be aired again on The Disney Channel, or do I have to wait for it to come out on DVD.

My kids told me they wanted to see it, and I guess I missed the boat.

According to www.disneychannel.com, High School Musical will air again on January 25 at 8:00 p.m. and on February 2 at 8:00 p.m.

i thought it was a good movie there were a few mess ups. but overall they got it right. but what i don't get is that they don't kiss i thought that they missed that. and you know the girls were good singers and they were pretty too.
the basketball team looked nothing like a team at all. i never danced on the varsity team at my school. but the music was good
so i give it an b+

This was a very good movie for a 'DCOM'. The music was great and the actors were good. (Their singing wasn't too bad either.) My first thought after I saw this movie: The DVD better come out soon because The Proud Family Movie came out on DVD already!

Just finished watching it. Eh, yeah it was ok for a DCOM. Maybe it's because I hate the whole new generation Disney Channel stuff but it was fun to watch at times.

I really liked the dancing and singing a lot. The acting left a little to be desired but hey- what's to expect? When you take the movie for what it is (a DCOM), it was pretty good. I won't be picking it up on DVD but enjoyed watching it tonight. And I'm glad I watched it so I know I won't have to spend $$ on it.

i was just wondering if anybody knew if "High School Musical" was going to come out on DVD, and if its going to come out in a wave of DCOMs or by its sel flike the cheetah girls?

No one really knows. TWitches did well and its not on DVD yet. If it does come to DVD eventually, I dont knwo which other DCOMs they would release with it. I just hope that they also include the edition that has the sing along tracks with it that premeiered on Disney Channel. Also tons of behind the scenes aired too. I hope those are included too.

Well if anyone goes to itunes, you will notice the top 10 downloads has about quite a number of songs from high school musical...and also about "twitches" doing well...i highly doubt Twitches was watched by 7.7 million viewers, because IMHO Twitches did not look that good.

This is actually the first DCOM movie in about 2 years that i have bothered to care about because of commericals...and alot of ppl in my age group 19-24, have noticed it aswell. Id say this movie has bought up enough hype for a nice dvd release.

"Stick to the Status Quo" sounds like a classic musical like song...Stuck in my head all the time..

does anyone else thing "Breaking Free" sounds alot in structure to "What Dreams are made of" duet version from the lizzie mcguire movie?

I was wondering if it is really Zac (Troy in movie) singing?
