Welcome to the Second Annual Ultimate Disney.com Movie Awards - 2006! I hope you will all join me in following in Jack Seiley's footsteps and honoring the best of 2005 in the world of film!
This is the first stage, in which you all get to nominate films in the following categories (and those categories only). You may nominated up to 5 films
in each category (you may nominate less than 5, but no more than that).
Please only nominate movies that you have actually seen. Nominations must come from films released in 2005 (IMDb dates will be used as the final source for this).
Yes, it's the 2006 Awards because that's when it takes place, but the films must come from 2005! The same film can be submitted for multiple categories.
You have until 11:59pm (eastern time) on Tuesday, January 31 to submit your nominees. You may edit your votes up until that point but not after. The finalists will be announced shortly after that.

Oh, man! I was just about to query if I could host this year's awards! Anyway, glad their back. I have a suggestion: Two key awards are missing: Best Sound and Best Sound Effects.
In an attempt to diversify the eventual nominees, I was wondering if maybe the nominations process could be pushed to the preferential system of voting. Basically, everyone lists their nominees in preferential order from 1-5. When the votes are tabulated, the number ones on everyone's ballots are used to determine the nominees. This way, everyone's #1 choice plays a key role, and it benefits movies that not everyone has seen. It's a complicated process, and I haven't even explained it fully here, but I think it would make things more interesting. It may be a lot more work on behalf of the tabulators, but I'd be more than willing to help.
If anyone thinks this is a good idea, I would be more than willing to lay out the complete process.

(It's the one used by the Academy.)

Another suggestion: Maybe the cut-off date should be pushed to the very end of January, because I know that there are quite a few 2005 films in limited release that won't hit wide until the current cut-off date.

Yup: New World, Match Point, Munich, Brokeback Mountain, The Libertime, The Matador, Casanova, Hoodwinked, and possibly Ms. Henderson Presents all still will get wide releases in January.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have pushed back the release date and added the two categories. I'm reluctant to go with the third suggestion... it's not a bad idea and I wouldn't mind the extra counting, but there are already so many things to vote for (both here and in the other thread), that I worry about people either not voting or not bothering with the ranking because of taking too much thought and time.

I think if it's passed, people will go for it. There were several people last year who felt that there ballots had little representation in the eventual nominees, me included. The benefit of this method is that EVERYONE has their ballot counted in some way, other than simple vote tallying. Here's an example (and I'm just throwing film titles at random): Let's just say everyone puts Cinderella Man as their #5 choices, most are lukewarm toward it, but they want to just fill out five anyway. However, there are rabid fans of Crash, a film only a fraction of the board has seen. These people place that film at #1. Theoretically, the strong portion of #1's gives Crash the nomination as opposed to Cinderella Man, which many likes, but did not love. Anyway, I guess this is just one of those everyone-gets-a-piece-of-the-pie moments.

I agree with your theory, but I don't know how anyone could like Crash over Cinderella Man.

I forgot all about this one both here and in all the '05 threads. I will have to consider it for a few things now. Glad you posted it.

I've been quite looking forward to this, especially with each 2005 movie I've seen. Glad that the ever-awesome Awalla(n)ce will be hosting this year. Last year's was super fun.
I must say I don't like the idea of ranking the nominees because A) it wasn't done last year and the results were pretty good, B) it creates an incredible amount of extra work in counting (I know from experience) and quite a bit more in voting, C) it enables strong votes from just a few people to get a film that most people haven't seen to become a finalist (leading to inaccurate results, a la those alliances that dictate all the Survivor threads in Polls & Games), and D) it seeks to lessen the element of surprise which is already low on account of the votes being public.

I wanted to wait and see how many people voted and what others had to say, but I've decided to leave the voting as it was last year, pretty much for the reasons Luke outlines. Still, thanks for the suggestion! I hope those who would have preferred the other way still want to play.
