Buena Vista Home Entertainment France has finally announced today the release of the 1955 Disney Classic, <i>Lady and the Tramp</i> (<i>La Belle et le Clochard</i> in French) for <b>February 14, 2006</b> (meaning 14 days before the US release !).

As usual in France, the movie will be available to buy in two separate editions: the single disc release and the 2-Disc Collector's Edition.

The Standart single disc release will include the movie entirely restored with "an image and sound beyond their original brillance":

- All-New Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix Doly Digital 5.1 Tracks (English, French and Dutch)
- Bonus material:
. Scène coupée commentée : « Les rôles inversés » (4’40’’)
. Musique : clip de la chanson « Bella Notte » interprétée par Steve Tyrell
. Jeu (psychotest) : « Quel chien êtes-vous ? »
. Les coulisses de la production : Le pedigree de Belle (40’)
. Galeries : recherche graphique, création des personnages, story-boards…

Here's the artwork for this single disc release (the same as the US 2-disc one):

The 2-Disc Collector's Edition will include on Disc 1, the same content as in the single disc release, except that it will have a 5.1 DTS track (French only), only available on this set (that will replace the Dutch DD 5.1 of the single disc edition).
Here is the list of the new special bonus features for this set:

DVD 1
. All the features listed below for the single DVD release
. Bonus Preview of the 2nd DVD

DVD 2
. Bandes annonces (6’) : sortie de 1955 + ressorties de 1972 et 1986

Here's the 2 artworks porposed now for this 2 disc CE release (of course, just one of them will make ti for the definitive release, don't know which one) :

For those who wonder, as we're talking about French DVDs, this 2 Disc CE will be a presented as a digipack with a slipcase ! A wolrd exclusive for this new release !!

It's important to note that these releases of <i>Lady and the Tramp</i> in France will be the first to present the film in its original aspect ratio of 2.35. The Limited French Edition released in 2000, did not present it as such and showed a distorted 1.33 aspect ratio, cuting about 56% of the film image. Whereas, the same Limited Edition release in the US had the original 2.35 AR.

Also, note that on the same date of Feb. 18th, BVHE France will take the opportunity of the release of this 1955 masterpiece to rerelease its now out-of-print sequel: <i>Lady and the Tramp 2: Scamp's Adventure</i> (<i>La Belle et le Clochard 2: l'appel de la rue</i>). The set will apparently be the same as the old one, released a few years ago. The new artwork will be the same as well:

Finally, a special Box Set will will also be released on the same day including the 2-Dsic CE of the classi, and the DVD of the sequel, with a SRP of 37,99€ for the box:

I'm a little suprised they didn't change the Lady and the Tramp 2 cover.

Well, sequels mostly suck, so it wouldn't be worth changing the cover for some crap. Granted, I haven't seen this sequel, but if it's along the lines of all the other Disney sequels, it probably sucks.

It's not crap, actually!

In my humble opinion, this is one of the better (if not the best) of the DTV sequels. Most people talk about 'along the lines of all the other Disney sequels' as the Beauty and the Beast and first Aladdin sequels, which do certainly suck harder than a hard sucking thing. However this, along with 101 Dalamatians are FAR above the 'rest' of the sequels. The solid DVD presentation of LAtT 2 shows just how much a labour of love this was for all involved. If you haven't seen this particular sequel, and are avoiding it because you haven't liked some of the others, I'd say give it a go. It is definitely better, even if it does follow the traditional 'son of' or 'role reversal' sequel formula.
