Disney Heads to China

The Walt Disney Co. announced on Wednesday that “The Secret of the Magic Gourd”, shooting since October, is the company’s first Chinese-language film completely produced and shot in the country in the city of Hangzhou. The film will mark the first non-import production available throughout the country.

Secret of the Magic Gourd

Along with the Disneyland theme park in Hong Kong and Disney theme stores in several Chinese cities, the film production is said to foreshadow deals for a theme park in Shanghai and a Chinese Disney television channel. Disney is reportedly attempting to break in to China’s booming entertainment business.

According to the Associated Press, Disney is partnered with China Film Group Corp. and Hong Kong’s Centro Digital Pictures Ltd. on the film. It is based on a popular children's book by Chinese novelist Zhang Tianyi.

I'll post this over in the Theme Park forum as well, but because it is primarily about a new 'Disney film', I thought it would be worth mentioning here.

I thought for sure there was a newer thread about this...

tommy2.net says:

Disney’s first Chinese film "Bao hu lu de mi mi" is being redubbed in English and retitled "The Secret of the Magic Gourd". Corbin Bleu has been cast as the voice of the Magic Gourd.

YAY!!!

THANK you. I saw the logo for this movie posted on BrownPuppy's post about the Little Mermaid 3, and I've been wondering about it since then.

This is exciting!!!

So is this coming to theatres? Or is it a straight-to-DVD release?

Thanks for the news, Amy!!

They had better include the original Chinese language on the DVD as well...

It's on DVD, Dan.

Here's the trailer:

For some reason, when I read about the movie before, I thought that it was an animated movie. I mean, obviously parts of this are animated, but I didn't realize that it's mostly a live-action movie.

I'm kind of speechless as to what I think of the trailer. It's extremely strange to hear Corbin's voice coming out of a strange-looking-but-kind-of-cute vegetable.

XD OMG I thought the whoel Corbin Bleu casting thing was a joke.

And then I saw the trailer and it looks like an even bigger joke.

Oh well. Cant blame Disney for trying. The film probably sounds better in the original chinese version.

I think this film looks really interesting, I'd probably rent it before I'd buy it though. I'm not a huge fan of live-action voice over's. I think i'd prefer it to be in english subtitles. Either that or I should probably learn how to speak mandarin a bit better. I only know a few questions and responses from when I traveled there over the past summer, and even that i'm begining to forget...

I'd seen the trailer and the dub voices are poorly synched up with the mouth movements, which would most likely distract me when watching the movie. The characters could be mouthing things in contrast to what their voices are saying.

I wish they were releasing the original with subtitles too. I watched C J 7 (a cute Chinese movie about a tiny alien that a boy and his father mistakes for an electronic toy) a few weeks ago. It was the USA release version but it kept the original language and had English subtitles.

But, Sky Syndrome, if the movie had English subtitles, you wouldn't hear Corbin Bleu's dubbing!!!!

:D <3 :)

Oh, and UD says that the movie includes the English dub and original
Chinese. Just FYI.

That's great! I had seriously doubted Disney making the original an option. Afterall, the Studio Ghibli movies didn't have the option on their DVDs to be watched in Japanese.
