The box set is WELL WORTH the price. Many consider it to be the best set Disney has ever produced on DVD. For $50, its a great deal.

I wouldn't recommend waiting for the Platinum Edition at all. The plans for this re-release are still very hazy and there's no real word exactly what it will be and what it will include. Also, if you were to wait, it looks as if it would be between 5-10 years before you'd see it (this is coming from various reports of international DVD release plans).
The set that is already available is extremely comprehensive, and plus: it's going out of print in January. I recommend getting this one ASAP. You'll be a happy customer.
