December 13, 2005 Next Studio Ghibli Film Announced

Studio Ghibli has officially announced that their next feature film will be Gedo Senki (Gedo War History), directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki. The film will be an adaptation of Ursula K Le Guin's "A Wizard of Earthsea," and will be released in the Japanese theatres in July 2006.

The Studio's official site has also undergone a revamp. Details of the new film can be found there. There are also dedicated sections of production diary and director's diary. Goro Miyazaki has posted some comments on his father's opposition towards his work as a director.

Hopefully this will get a theatrical release here in the U.S., unlike how The Cat Returns was treated. This will become my most highly anticipated movie of 2007 (probably when it will be released).

Wow, great news! More proof that the genre known "as Ghibli films" can use a Japanese medium to present non-Japanes stories. I didn't realize this studio had the capabilities of making films this quickly. That gives them roughly six months to run the filmmaking gammut. Are you sure it's not 2007?

This is probably the first Ghibli release I'm interested in! I'll be keeping a close watch on this feature!

I was very surprised at how quickly they can do these movies as well. Seems Howl's was just released and they're already finishing up the next project. The design and style of the poster (especially the dragon) looks very promising, hopefully it'll have more solid storytelling than the previous movie (which I didn't like very much, apart from the amazing animation.)

Well the scriptwriter for Ocean Waves is also writing the screenplay for this movie so it shouldn't be a complete disaster ala Battle Royale2. This film will probably be on the same level as the Cat Returns.

I think the trailer is gorgeous (that adjective is becoming a cliche when referring to Studio Ghibli films, but it's true). The art direction appears to be as intricate as ever, but I can definately tell that it's not a Miyazaki picture...Hayao that is. The character designs seem to have gone a step backward to a previous era of Ghibli anime and I can't say I'm thrilled by this development. The song was nice, but I don't think it's quite up to Joe Hisaishi level standards. Overall, I'm underwhelmed, but I do believe it will go above and beyond this year's slate of American animated releases. (For clarification, I'm making that statement based on the trailer and on track records with studios/directors. It's an educated guess. )

I'm so excited about this movie. I don't really want to wait till fall/winter for its DVD release in US to finally see it though.

That movie looks great!! I have all their Region 1 releases and I;m looking forward for the next wave.

What would be in the next wave, though, to accompany Tales from Earthsea ? Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday? A double-dip of Princess Mononoke in two-disc format?

Anyways, judging by the trailer, I'm sure this'll definitely get a theatrical release!

Right now, I think that this would get a theatrical release, and then it would be released in the next wave. But the next wave probably won't come out for a while because of Only Yesterday's situation, Ocean Waves not being a priority, and the possibility of a section for Ghibli Shorts.

However I could see Disney releasing the above 3 before Earthsea, and maybe buying the rights to Takahata's Horus: The Prince of the Sun, which would probably make a good companion to Earthsea.
