To tell you the truth, I didn't expect it, since it wasn't a much-hyped release, but if there's any movie that deserves it its this one.

FYI, VideoPremiereAwards posts them earlier and more reliably than DVD File. They don't have the percentages, but they do have other interesting data.

Get ready because The Lion King is going to make recorder breaking sales! It is going to be number one on the charts for quiet some time! This is my vision, I hope it's right!

Lion King will almost certainly wind up in the Top 10 for the year. Sleeping Beauty in the top 20. Pirates will make the top 20 too, probably. Finding Nemo at #1.

Mark my words.

Wow, Sleeping Beauty beat Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. That's awsome.

Is there a way we can find out estimates on the number of copies sold? Kinda interested in that...

VideoBusiness will certainly have those numbers at the end of the year. I don't know of any sales tracking sites that provides weekly units sold figures. Maybe a Yahoo news article will list it, but those often count the # of units sold to stores and rental places.

I wouldn't doubt it.. It's a great movie..

Hehe.. well, this is great news, and I hope that Lion King, Nemo, and Sleeping Beauty will all be at the top 3 at one time!!

Sleeping Beauty is still holding up well. It slipped to number 2 in its second week, but still sold more than The Two Towers.

In any event, Disney's got some of the year's top sellers already and their 1-2 punch the next two months hasn't even hit...

The Lion King will top first week, but in this packed fall it won't stay up there; I'm betting on a slide to number two second week. Reason: The Matrix Reloaded. Sure, there will be some people who hold off in anticipation of the ultimate special edition trilogy boxed set next year, but it's still going to manage some very nice sales numbers now, considering that its predessescor is The Matrix, and the cross-promotion with The Matrix Revolutions theatrical release -- most people, myself included, will want to try and decode Reloaded before Revolutions hits theaters. Not to mention the mammoth listing of other high profile upcoming DVDs.

As for Sleeping Beauty - I can't say I'm suprised, I've been expecting this from the DVD forever. One of Disney's most-requested titles in a jam-packed two-disc edition with both WS & P&S versions so as to please everyone and a whole lot of extras. Add to that the fact that it's (legally) available on DVD for the first time ever and returning to the marketplace after a 6-year modtrium, and you've got all you need for a #1 debut. It deserves it, too.

I think Lion King will outsell Matrix Reloaded in the long run...maybe. It does have the "not a new movie" going against it, despite it technically BEING a new movie, since it's not the theatrical cut.

Anyway, the week ending 9/28 sees Holes WS at the top. Sleeping Beauty falls to 6th.

I can't see TMR selling more than 9 million units. I just don't think it was well recepted enough.

As for TLK, its Disney's most requested title, and has a massive marketing campaign to back it up. 10 million is likely, IMO.

In the long run, yes, The Lion King will probably outsell The Matrix Reloaded because most people will probably wait for the inevitable Matrix boxed set when all three films are on DVD, where they won't be waiting for Lion King because there's not going to be a more extravigent special edition until we get to HD-DVD. Also, the R rating will restrict the number of people who can buy Matrix, but The Lion King has no limits with its G rating. Granted, people under the age of 17, myself included, have ways of getting Reloaded into our hands (mine being Mom.) However, it still won't be able to outsell TLK.

However, I'm expecting The Matrix Reloaded to sell more copies the week of October 14th (its inital release week) than The Lion King will, since it will be in its second week then, and a good percentage of sales are always generated first week these days. Also, I think Reloaded's sales will be especially strong, stronger than usual for a new release possibly, in its first three weeks as people rush to buy it so that they can "decode" it before Revolutions debuts in theaters on 11.05. Thus, in Reloaded's first week it will sell more than TLK will for that single week. However Lion King will probably outsell it by the end of the year.

And - of course The Matrix Reloaded will sell more than 9 million copies. Even if it doesn't find its way into as many homes as the original Matrix DVD, it will be in most of them in some form (weather in this release or in the inevitable special edition in the box set.) It wasn't as well recieved because of the huge expectations, but another thing to keep in mind is that Reloaded and Revolutions are really one long sequel to the original Matrix divided up into two halves for time reasons (and to make it a trilogy) so I think a lot of people's perspective on Reloaded will improve when the world finally sees Revolutions.

Star Wars: Episode II made $30 million more than Reloaded at the box-office, but only got around 8 million copies sold by the end of 2002. I'd say the reaction to both films was reletively equal, so I wouldn't be too sure that TMR sells more than 9 million.

As of this time of the year, according to Videoscan's charts on DVDFile, Nemo is of course #1, Lion King is 7th, and Sleeping Beauty, while it's fallen out of the top 20, was 30th at last appearance. I suspect Pirates could make the top 15 or even the top 10, now. We won't really know what's what until the holiday-buying rush is all over, and the end-of-the-years sales statistics are in, but I'm still pretty confident my initial prediction won't be wrong.

So much for "The Lion King not selling well" I guess.
