I just got some new shelves so I am thinking of reorganizing my DVD collection. My current methods breaks down into the following categories.
Beatles, Cartoons, Christmas, Disney, Doctor Who, Documentary/educational, Movies, Musicals, Sci-Fi/Horror, Silent Films, Super-Hero, TV series.
I think I've gotten carries away. I am considering removing several categories to end up with this:
Animated Films (non-Disney) Beatles, Christmas, Disney, Doctor Who, Documentary/educational, Movies, Musicals, and TV series.
Any suggestions?

Right now I just have everything in alphabetical order. When I get a better DVD shelf I'm planning to seperate them some.

I have one big shelf, but because it want my dvds to be in chronological order, i decided to arange the other dvds in groups of genre, and my Disney dvds in chronological order...my brother thought they weren't arranged, but i know exactly where each dvd is

As much as I want mine in chronological order it wont happen. See when you have so many differnt type of packaging it just does not look right on a shef. Like you might have Any Given Sunday in you collection which was a snapper case, along side E.T. the Limited edtion. It just does not look right.
I have mine like this.
On one shelf I have all my Disney Animated.
On another I have all amary cases
On the next I have slipcover cases
On another I have seasons (Tv Shows), and Sports
Then I have one for Weird Shape ones. Like the E.T., with the new Jurassic Park, along with the Godfather Collection, and Batman etc.......
I always move around my DVDs to make it look nice on the shelf.

I have all my dvds on a bookshelf. I am trying to think of a better storage solution. But this is how they are arranged :
1st - Disney DVDS
2nd - Natalie Wood DVDS
3rd - TV Shows on DVD
All the rest are arranged alphabetically.

Ahh, we've been through this before. Remember I said I just toss my DVD's on the floor and I would be lucky if I can find one.

I have a narrow, wooden dvd tower that holds all of my animation. The first shelf is all alphabetized tv animation. Then there's the 2D Disney feature films in chronological order, the Pixar films in chronological order, the non-Disney animated movies in alphabetical order, and then the Studio Ghibli films in chronological order.
Next to the case, in 2 plastic mini-towers, are my live-action movies. All in alphabetical order, there are 3 categories: Disney, concerts, and regular.
Then next to the live-action movies are my box sets (excluding Cinderella) and underneath are my live-action television dvds.

I've got mine organized like this:
3 bookshelves that once held books now hold the following:
Shelf 1: Walt Disney Treasures, Classic Cartoon Favorites, Disney Animated Classics, Pixar, Studio Ghibli, Other Animated Films, Live-Action. The entire shelf is full, so the DVDs stop on the shelf at Pirates of the Caribbean, and I've got Freaky Friday, National Treasure, The Pacifier, and Bionicle 3 stacked on top in the small space.
Shelf 2: Fox Studio Classics, Fox Film Noir, Regular Fox DVDs, Artisan, Columbia/Tristar, Dreamworks. I've got my 3 Dimension films stacked atop the C/T Dreamworks DVDs.
Shelf 3: MGM, Miramax, New Line, Touchstone, Hollywood Pictures. The Hollywood Pictures just sticks out like a sore thumb, and my sole Palm Pictures DVD (The Basketball Diaries) goes with New Line simply because it was distributed theatrically by them.
Then I've go 3 large cardboard display cases I got from Sam's Club. The top is Mama Celeste (I think), the middle is Hershey's Chocolate, and the bottom is M&M's.
Mama Celeste - WB 4-disc, WB 3-disc, WB 2-disc, WB Amarays, WB Snappers
Hershey's Chocolate - Paramount, Universal
M&M's - Ozzie & Harriet Public Domain, The Lucy Show Public Domain, individual Public Domain Titles (alphabetical by company), TV Miniseries/Movies on DVD, Foreign Movies, Garbo: the Signature Collection
I've got the boxes for my Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Audrey Hepburn collections in the M&M's box as well, so they cover the other DVDs. And I've got to many WB and Universals, so I stack them in front of some Universal titles.
And finally, I've got this put-together white metal crate with my DVD player on top, VHS's on the middle row, and more VHS's on the bottom row. DVDs are lined up in front of the VHS's as follows:
Middle row - Star Trek SCE's I-X, Star Wars I-VI, The Story of Star Wars DVD
Bottom row - All my TV on DVD in season sets.
Stacked on top of Star Trek - X-Men Collection, Back to the Future, E.T., Legend, and the case for whatever DVD I'm watching. Also stacked on top of the Star Wars DVDs is my two Star Trek TOS volumes, 8 and 40.
Stacked on top of my TV on DVD - Coupling, Friends Series Finale, and Family Guy Freakin' Sweet Collection. I've also got "This is Coronation Street" sticking out like a sore thumb as well.
Oh yeah, all my titles are in chronological order.

You mean Alphabeti... yeah ABC mode will do.
I don't actually throw my DVD's on my floor. I actually only have about 20 DVD's and 10 PS2 game so I keep them at the head of my bed. My bed's got one of those built-in shelves so I just put them there in no particular order along with my CD's.

Mine are in alphabetical order. I used to have the animated stuff seperate, but I ran out of room so I put them all together. I do have my TV box sets in a different place and those too are in alphabetical order. I have all my DVDs on two DVD towers and one shelf my husband made. One other shelf my husband made only has VHSs on it but I'm slowly getting rid of those.

Mine have shifted a fair bit over time. When I first started the collection, it was by genre, but as it has grown (and grown and grown) I've had to reorganise.
The majority are alphabetical, and presently run from 007 to Zoolander (that's about six shelves worth, with stuff piled on top of other stuff).
I then have a shelf of music DVDs, which are also arranged in alphabetical order.
Then there are three shelves of Disney. These have been split into Animated Classics on shelf one; DTVs and other animation on the second and Treasures; live action and everything else on the third.
The very bottom shelf has largely Doctor Who DVDs and other BBC TV shows.
I've had to stick most of my boxsets in a cupboard above my computer, as I simply have no room left to display them all. Ideally, I would have wall to wall bookshelves in here, but that is simply not possible given current space restrictions.
Oh, and there is a CD folder that contains over 200 discs that I received to review. If they all had covers, I'd be completely stuffed for space.

I sort mine into groups.
Disney Live Action, Disney Animated Classics, Warner Bros. Live Action, MGM Live Action, Paramount Live Action, Universal Live Action, TV Shows (Season Sets), TV Shows (Episode Compilations), Classic Cartoon Favorites, Sing Along Songs, Disney TV Movies, Pixar, Walt Disney Treasures

I arrange mine by category and year:
Disney Treasures, followed by Disney Animated, followed by Disney Live Action and non-Disney animated on one shelving unit.
The second shelving unit has movie set (like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman, etc), classic comedians (Marx Brothers, Abbott and Costello, etc.) and Doctor Who.
My third unit has my television shows (other than Doctor Who) and other theatrical releases (not part of sets).
Will probably need a fourth shelving unit soon as most of the three units I have are getting pretty full.

On the top shelf I have all of my Disney DVDs arraigned chronologically.
The two shelves has all of my TV shows, arraigned chronologically by season, but also arraigned by show according to how many there are (so they all fit on the shelf properly.
On the next shelf I have movies with sequels (i.e. Spiderman 1 and 2), arraigned alphabetically.
On the bottom most shelf I have the rest of my movies with no sequels, arraigned alphabetically.
Below that I have a shelf with music CDs, Gamecube game and a few Disney DVDs that I just can't bear to part with.

Organizing a DVD collection "chronologically" would be putting in order of the date/year it came out. Such as: Many people put their Disney collection with Snow White first then Pinocchio.
