I've been stuck in the middle of a dilemma for a while now and I want to get other opinions. I'm pretty sure this topic has been posted before, but I'm wondering if views have changed.
I have copies of a few Limited Issue movies: The Little Mermaid, Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, 101 Dalmations, The Jungle Book, and Pinocchio, and I also have a bunch of Gold Collection movies such as Mulan, Alice and Wonderland, Pocahontas and the like...so I'm wondering now how many of you:

1) keep your original DVD and buy a new PE, SE or Collectors Ed,
2) sell your original DVD and buy a new PE, Se or COllectors Ed,
3) don't buy anything new, just keep your original DVD
4) only buy a new DVD if the movie is special to you or the features are good, and sell your orginal DVD
5) only buy a new DVD if the movie is special to you or the features are good, and keep your orginal DVD

As of now, I'm doing Number 3, just being happy with what I have, ONLY because the movies that have been released (Mulan, Pocahontas, Alice in Wonderland) are not my favorite movies, however, I'm a bit of a Completist (thanks Escapay) so I'm having serious 'should I or shouldn't I' issues, since if I start buying the new versions, I'm going to do it for ALL of them, regardless of if I like them or not, but at the same time, I don't know if I want two releases of some DVDs and not of all since if I have, say, the Collectors Edition of the Lion King, I'm probably not going to ever buy another release, unless they plan on releasing it with a life-size, real-life, authentic James Earl Jones...I mean, what possible extras could they add that I'd want?...thus no two releases of some.

Only buy new copies of certain movies, keep the old one.

Well it's easy I keep my old copy and buy a new one.

For your LI and GC titles, if you really feel the need to be a completionist, simply keep them and get the new versions anyway. Especially for Alice in Wonderland, Pocahontas, and Mulan. All 3 boast MUCH better bonus features (which all have the important "rewatchability" factor) and better transfers (though Mulan's 1.85 vs 1.66 aspect ratio is difficult to explain).

As for me, I voted for that one about not having all the movies anyway, so I buy them as I go. But if I were in your shoes, I'd go with 5. Buy the new version only if the features are good (which most of them are), but still keep the original. I always have plans of getting the 2-disc edition of My Fair Lady, for example, but I will still keep my old single-disc edition in the snapper, simply because it was a birthday present and I'm sentimental like that. For a couple movies, I went the OPPOSITE direction. I bought the new edition, then went and bought the old edition as well. Well...the only movie I can think of where I did that was The Outsiders, but that's because it's essentially two different movies because of the score.

Well, if they add anything at all related to the actual making of the movie, which was sadly lacking in the PE, then I'd double-dip.

I'd advise you to go with either #1 or #5, but don't stay at #3. The newer Collector's/Special/Platinum Editions have much better audio/video quality than the Gold Collection/Limited Issue versions, so even if you don't care much for bonus features, you'd be getting the better film presentation. Whether or not you want to keep your old version is entirely up to you, but I suppose if it were me, I'd keep the old release for sentimental reasons (I can never sell anything that I've had for more than a week).

I'd probably keep the old version, and get the new one, it its a favourite of mine i'll keep both copies, I don't trade my Disney DVDs in at shops, I sometimes do with other DVDs, but wouldn't with a Classic, I don't know why.

Fortunately, this has only happened once. When the 2-disc special edition of the Princess Diaries came out. I bought the new one (mostly for the free movie ticket for PD 2 and the widescreen version of the film) and I gave my single disc version to a friend.

As I consider myself "a bit of a collector", I definitely keep the original and buy a new edition.

With the PEs, this hasn't really been an issue so far, with Lady & the Tramp being the first 'Platinum' double-dip, and Little Mermaid will be my next PE double-dip.

That said, I own multi-region releases of the same PEs anyways. For example:

- 3 x Snow White (R2/UK Box; R4 and R1)
- 2 x Lion King (R1 Gift Set; R4)
- 2 x Aladdin (R1 Gift Set; R4 Trilogy)
- 2 x BatB (R1 & R2 box with sequel)

I have also bought Atlantis twice (the R2 version has a cool cover); Bug's Life was a double dip; as was Alice in Wonderland; Pocahontas and Lilo & Stitch (for the R4 2-Disc Special Editions).

Other titles I sometimes don't bother with. I own the Toy Story Ultimate box, so I probably won't bother with the new SEs. Other films may just not be worth an upgrade if the bonus features are not significant or if I really only bought the movie for my collection, and not for any great love of it.

Well I do both sell the old one or keep it. It depends on the film and what extras were left out if the rest of my family wants it.

I buy the new editions of certain titles. I consider myself fortunate that I arrived late to the Disney DVD scene, so I already know which movies will get Platinum treatment or (likely) Special Editions. This has enabled me to resist buying the Gold Collection and Limited Issue titles that I know will be upgraded in the future.

Thus far, I double-dipped on Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary Edition, and I would buy a 2-disc Hunchback of Notre Dame DVD set. Titles like Sleeping Beauty & Fantasia, which already have spectacular DVDs, would have to have something amazing in their Platinum versions for me to buy them again.

I will keep older versions, even if it is just for different artwork and menus. However, there is usually at least one bonus feature that is not ported over to the new DVD, so that is definitely reason to hang on to the previous release.

I fall under this category :

im gonna sell my vhs copy of lady and the tramp and buy the new pe dvd this febuary

After all, we all wanted better things from the Lion King and so forth. Hoepfully, there will be a better version, giving us a point to rebuy, one day.

I buy multi-region editions partly due to collector's value and partly because there are subtle differences. To use LK as an example again, the Region 4 release - which came out some time after the US edition - came with a "Disney Enhanced Home Theatre mix” in half-rate DTS. The fact that it was a "Vault" title gave me the added incentive to rebuy.

Well for now. I know they're probably going to make another edition... like Uranium Edition.

Me? I might be persuaded to buy the new edition, depending on the scenario. For example, I never got either the CE or GC editions of Tarzan, but I didn't buy the new disc when it was released, thinking it was a step down from what they offered before (and I was pretty miffed about the false 2-disc advertising). If it's an upgrade, I'd probably buy, but not if it's a downgrade or if the "new" or different features are of no interest (teeny-bopper music video or some game).

I'm pretty sure there is room to move in terms of extras with the next edition or Blu Ray or Holographic Memory or whatever.

At the very least, there must be a ton of information in the Disney vaults for each of the 'classics' that were made during Walt's reign, and the laserdisc editions haven't been completely stripped bare in all cases. (Some have come very close).

I think the only place to go is to actually make a Diamond Edition OUT of Diamonds, and charge a few grand each. It only seems fair to collectors to have something the plebs can't get their hands on
