On occasion, yes, but only if I've checked every other venue possible in getting the DVD for less than $20. The majority of my catalog movies I usually can find for $15 or less, and new releases I always try and find for at most $17, otherwise I wait around for it to go down in a couple years.
Examples:
-The Girl Next Door: Unrated Edition - its original SRP was a ridiculous $27.95, but I waited about seven months, and found it at Target on sale for $10. Now, its SRP is $19.95, but many superstores carry it around $13-$15.
-Lonesome Dove - When the miniseries was first released in 2000, it was on a single-disc DVD_18 (Dual-sided, Dual-layered) and SRP was $39.95. I bought the later release (they split it into two dual-layered discs) at Suncoast in a 2 for $20 sale, and recently saw it at Target for $7.50
-Moulin Rouge: 2-Disc Special Edition - Fox does dual releases, but sometimes makes the stupid decision to put the 2-disc one out of print, so this one was hard to find. My target had it for $26.95 for a year before they stopped carrying it, and a year later, I found it used and mispriced at $5.99
I don't collect many TV shows, only the ones I feel has enough rewatchability for me (and I'm holding off on my absolute favorite, I Love Lucy, so I can buy all 6 seasons + the Comedy Hours in one lump sum). The only two I can think of where I paid more than $30 is Lois and Clark (before I knew about the big WB sale) and Desperate Housewives. Otherwise, everything else I got for $25 or less...
Examples:
-The Golden Girls - Every season I always get the week or the month it comes out, this Tuesday will be no different. I don't care if I have to pay SRP, the show is worth it.
-Mary Tyler Moore - This is a classic show that I've always enjoyed but never felt it was worth buying on DVD. Then I found it at Amazon for a steal at $14.99 per season, so I got the two available.
-Dynasty/Remington Steele - Both shows I also got on Amazon for $19.99 each, and I plan on getting the later seasons for that price as well.
-Doogie Howser - Got it for $21.44, but it's still just $1.44 over the usual 20.
-Coupling - I've gotten the first two seasons for $13 and $15 respectively, got the 4th season for free, and got the third season at a discount, so each one I got for less than $20.
Boxsets I don't count, because quite simply, it's a discounted sum for the collection of movies with a free piece of housing cardboard, so I divide the price per DVD.
Examples:
- Garbo: The Signature Collection has an SRP of $99.95, but I got it at Amazon for $74.94. There are 9 DVD sets (10 discs altogether as one's a 2-disc set), so essentially I only paid $8.33 per set. The DVDs themselves have an SRP of $19.95, and the 2-disc set SRP's for $39.95. Also, there's a bonus disc only available in that set, so technically it'd be 8 movies divided by $74.94, which rounds to $9.37. So if I bought the movies individually, I'd have to pay more than half of what I paid for the boxset.
