Personally, I find it stellar with only very few complaints.
However, going through the reviews @ amazon and other reviews of the film around the internet, I realized just how many people hated that film's look. 'substandard', 'unimpressive', 'static', 'bland', 'rushed', '...a let fown after The Lion King' are only a few of people's complaints about the animation in the film.

I also can't understand why so many people hate this movie. It irritates me mostly because it's DEFINITELY one of my favorite Disney film, in my opinion, filled with wondrous animation, beautiful songs and yes, I love the Disney-fied stroyline.

Well, I think the big reason people hate it is because its not true to real-life, but I personally don't care. It's a movie, not a documentary. As long as its entertaining and isn't trying to be a blueprint of the actual event, it doesn't matter.

As for the animation, I don't have a problem with it. Calling it "rushed and static" would be like calling Sleeping Beauty the same - they are both stylized in terms of art.

I think its a great movie for a lot of reasons, the animation is brilliant IMO.
I love the colours they used especially the blues they used for the forest.

However the DVD isn't that great! I think is movie needs to be restored lol. Just not with bright bright colors, just enough for the quality!

Pocahontas is actually not one of my favorite Disney movies. The animation was fine and the Colors of the Wind song/scene was outstanding but it just wasn't one that stuck out for me. But who knows, maybe I and everyone else will like the movie a lot more when the 2 disc special edition comes out in January? Better picture quality sure could help everyone appreciate the film more since the current DVD picture quality is terrible. Maybe that's why there are so many negative comments about the animation? It could just be they are confusing the animation itself with a really poor transfer?

Beautiful animation, but an anemic story. I never saw the Sleeping Beauty influence until I checked out the extras in the latest DVD release, and it's definitely there. I really love looking at this movie, but the story or characters don't do anything for me.

The songs are OK, though. I really like Steady as the Beating Drum and Savages.

The animation style harkened back to Sleeping Beauty and was a very styleized art form. I've often wondered how breathtaking it would have been if shot in 2.35:1 instead of the standard 1.66:1. Lush and artistic, it might not have been as real-looking, for lack of a better word, as the then-recent Lion King, and I think that damaged it in a lot of people's minds, but when you consider that this was an artistic choice and stop comparing it to Lion King, it's astonishing, and the Colors of the Wind sequences is one of the most beautiful in all animation history. And just for the record, I do love the movie, music and story included. As I never was an obsessive history buff it's easy for me to overlook the tinkering and forgive it for story purposes (as I have done in my own stories frequently.) I can also find distinct elements of Romeo & Juliet in Pocahontas and to this day it remains my very favorite telling of the story, eclipsing both West Side Story and the original Shakespeare version.

I think the animation is stellar. The human characters have to be the most "real" and natural that a Disney film has ever had. They're not cartoony looking so all the acting is subtle and it comes through fantastic. The art direction is also gorgeous. It's like Sleeping Beauty in that way and in that it's a very underrated film, artistically speaking.

I too like the animation in Pocahantas. It does resemble Sleeping Beauty, in a way. It's not my all-time favorite movie, but it is enjoyable. I especially like the Colors of the Wind. I will probably pick up the special edition.

i think a lot of people were let down due to the succes of the previous work. look at what was leading up to it: the little mermaid, beauty and the beast, aladdin, and the lion king. disney's audience had really grown to encompass a family again. there was bound to be a film that came and stopped the trend of, "oh wow, disney 2-d animation is soooo cool". i don't think it was the film's fault, just the timing of it. i, personally, love this film and am overjoyed to see that it is getting the 2-Disc treatment it deserves. i also think it is the right time for it too. people that were upset with the film didn't purchase it when it came to video and dvd originally. however, enough time has passed such that when someone sees a promo for it on tv, it'll bring back pleasant memories of disney's "heyday". i just hope disney puts out as many promos as that of Sleeping Beauty. thanks for the commercials disney

I've heard so many complaints about the movies quality on the region1 dvd. Is it really that bad?? Because i have the region2 version and i was amazed by its quality. I also feel bad they're releasing a special edition. I usually dont re-buy a dvd but pocahontas is one of my favourites

In all seriousness though, if as you say Pocahontas is one of your favorites, then I would tell you to be thrilled that it is finally getting the special edition it so richly deserves. From what I hear, the Pocahontas laserdisc release was very highly praised, including a really great commentary track. Because Disney does not consider this movie to be on their A-list, so to speak, they will probably "just" port this stuff over to DVD and not bother filming new material that "goes beyond" the old stuff, which means we're already virtually guarenteed a classy, packed two-discer like the other Disney DVDs available which relied heavily on their respective laserdiscs for extra material (Snow White and Sleeping Beauty come to mind), AND they won't make us sit through another one of their crappy new music videos either.

Why do you assume this? Practically every DVD S.E. Disney has released recently has had a new music video - including the above mentioned Snow White & Sleeping Beauty. I'm already expecting teeny-bopper music videos on Alice & Poca.

dont worry, im definitely getting the two disc special edition, and im glad and excited. But i just dont like the way disney gets me to buy their films like 10 times lol
