October 24, 2005 Studio Ghibli Films to Air on Turner Movie Classics
(News from the MML via Animeondvd.com via ICv2)

Turner Classic Movies will air nine Studio Ghibli films in January 2006 according to ICv2.

The films will air each Thursday between 8:00pm and midnight.

TCM airs all films in their original aspect ratio and does not insert commercials.

Thanks to Christopher See for the update.

October 24, 2005 "Totoro" English Screening Report
----
The dub was fine, although I prefer the female actresses in the Fox dub, since Dakota Fanning and her sister Elle's voices can be a tad grating on the ears. The dub producers noted that adults are usually cast for children's voices in most anime dubs, but they felt that they needed a pair of young sisters to convey the feeling of the characters, and they considered Dakota and Elle to be perfect for the parts. (Some of the child actors-including one from the Yamadas-were in attendance, and they seemed surprisingly professional for their ages.) It took about 4-5 months for the English dub to be finished, but the producers hadn't seen this version until that very night. Ghibli prefers as little added to the material as possible, so sometimes, the lines have to be stretched out to be able to get the same syallabic value in the English versions. Other than that, nothing gets changed in translation. Miyazaki generally avoids dubs of his films, but went to see the dub for Howl, because apparently Lauren Bacal is a celebrity in Japan, and he seemed to hit it off with her when they met in the dubbing studio. American celebrities are eager to do voice acting for Ghibli films. Christian Bale was supposedly so motivated to do Howl that he made time during his wife's pregnancy to contribute his lines for the film.

Someone asked about theatrical plans for Totoro, but there are none, other than this rare screening.(It's a shame, too, because it's probably the best preserved print of an older Miyazaki film I've ever seen. The Cagliostro sub Manga occasionally screens in L.A. is grainy and flickers, while the Laputa sub Disney played at AFI doesn't have the luster of Totoro.) I brought up the rumour about Nausicaa getting a theatrical re-release, and was told that it would be cheaper to release it on home video than distribute it on the big screen, so they scrapped the idea. I also asked about the videotaped Takahata Q+A session from 2004, and why it wasn't on dvd as mentioned, and the producers had no clue about it. Speaking of Takahata, Only Yesterday has been "shelved" indefinitely, because it has more adult appeal than the rest of the Ghibli library. When it is released on dvd, it might be available in a sub-only format. Someone else asked about I Can Hear the Ocean, and was told it's up to Ghibli if they want Disney to give it a domestic release. Another person asked about the Ghibli Museum Totoro sequel, and was told it was a museum exclusive. I inquired about the possibility of On Your Mark getting a domestic release, and was told that the company was considering putting out a Ghibli shorts dvd. At the moment, the producers appear to be working on Ghiblies, but they'd look into On Your Mark.

We want Only Yesterday!! We want Only Yesterday! *everyone joins in chant*

You put Mononoke and Pom Poko out, but you can't put Only Yesterday out. C'mon you can put it out on Miramax (to join Mononoke), Hollywood, or Touchstone!!

I am really anxious about I Can Hear the Ocean Waves. Disney may never get the North American rights. I really want to see it, because the premise sounds so intriguing - I mean, an animated love triangle? That I got to see.

I'm excited about Howl's Moving Castle of course, and even moreso My Neighbor Totoro, which Roger Ebert included in his Greatest Film of All Time list. I'm looking foward to a lovely February! :)

Only Yesterday might be getting a sub only release? I guess Disney thinks dub fans are not mature enough to handle female periods. :P You guys are lucky I don't get TCM. Disney should air these films on one of their channels.

I agree!

When I saw Princess Mononoke with my friends back in 7th grade, we were so amazed by it! I didn't even care for animation or anything of Japanese culture back then, but I still enjoyed it. I loved Spirited Away even more.

My best friend has also seen a lot of the Ghibli films (the ones released in theaters, that is), and she says she likes them a lot. So does her little sister.

They should totally air some of the Studio Ghibli films on the Disney Channel. Pretty much anyone who enjoys good movies will love it.

Nice idea, but since constant reruns of LIzzie McGuire and That's so Raven kept Disney's own classics like Dumbo and Mary Poppins off their channel airwaves, well... ;)

We used to get Kiki's Delivery Service quite often, but lately we get it once a year.

More news from Studio Ghibli:
November 12, 2005 Next Studio Ghibli Film to be Directed by Miyazaki (but not the one you think)
According to a talk held by producer Toshio Suzuki at Meiji University, Ghibli's next film will be directed by Goro Miyazaki, a son of Miyazaki. Goro Miyazaki had been the director of Studio Ghibli Musuem until recently.

He used to work for a landscaping company before he became a director of the museum. The rooftop garden of Studio Ghibli was done by him.

The film will be released in the summer of 2006. Details will be announced on December 13 by Toho.

According to Mr. Suzuki, the elder Miyazaki is "still fiercely against the idea."

Son of Miyazaki to Direct Next Ghibli Film
By Ben
11-13-2005, 12:30 AM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki has announced in a talk at Meiji University that the next Studio Ghibli film will be directed by Goro Miyazaki, one of Hayao Miyazaki's sons, Ryoko Toyama on the Miyazaki Mailing List reports.

In the past, Goro Miyazaki worked in landscaping. According to Ms. Toyama, he designed the rooftop garden at the Ghibli Museum. No information was available about his animation experience, if any.

According to Suzuki, Miyazaki's father is "still fiercely against the idea."

Some speculate that a project said to be in development at Ghibli about a river trade route might be the one that the younger Miyazaki will direct. Previously, Suzuki had announced that the original work on which the next Ghibli film is to be based would be announced on Dec. 13.

Whisper of the Heart

This one is better then "The Cat Returns". I have it on an Asian version of the disc, and its certainly worth getting, an amazing story.

Since Disney's in charge of the Ghibli dubs, and since Cary Elwes did a great job as Baron in the Cat Returns, will Whisper of the Heart feature him or what's the English voice casting for it?

And I wonder if they'll still use "Country Roads". I heard there were copyright issues over it.

I will try to catch those 3 seeing that the Disney versions for the former 2 won't of have come out yet, and I want to see Only Yesterday.

Hopefully if Only Yesterday gets good rating they will dub it, or at least release it to DVD with subs.

The way they sing it on the Japanese version is quite cute actually. Didn't know it would make such a fuss?

Saw Howl's Castle in the movies, can't wait for the DVD want to see it again, long time till March :(

According to Optimum Home Entertainment (UK DVD HE company that I think Disney is some part of Disney UK, under which the Ghibli films are released) have said that the UK DVD release of Only Yesterday which hits stores on May 1st 2006 WILL have an English dub.

Of course they could be talking out of the back ends and getting every ones hopes up!

Well that is englightening news. I also checked the Madman Entertainment site, which distributes Ghibli movies to Japan, and Only Yesterday now has its own page. Madman's releases have been very similiar to Disney's. Maybe this is good news.
