I got really confused with this whole Platinum/special edition thing so if anyone can help me, I wanna know ONLY the films that are gonna be released as part of the PLATINUM edition series, not special edition and such.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Bambi
Cinderella
Peter Pan
Lady and the Tramp
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book
The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
The Lion King

The official list of Platinum Edition titles as of today (16/9/03) is

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Bambi
Cinderella
Lady and the Tramp
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book
The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
The Lion King

No one is really sure what's going on over the other four titles that were "added" in may (Pinocchio, Fantasia, Peter Pan and Sleeping Beauty).

The 4 additional titles will be added during the next cycle, so for now it is only the original 10 which Matty just listed. :)

Yes, and I believe those 4 (minus Fantasia) will become 2-disc SE's like Sleeping Beauty before they go Platinum in the next cycle. I say minus Fantasia because, technically, it's already a 2-disc SE: in the Fantasia Anthology, that is. Pinocchio and Peter Pan have a good chance of going 2-disc before 101 Dalmatians is released in 2007 (Pinocchio moreso than Pan since Pan's already been a 1-disc SE and Disney might think a 2-disc SE would confuse people).

noone asked about release dates, but this is one Platinum line-up sequence of many theorized possibilities:

Platinum Cycle 1 (Original 10):

Snow White (Oct 2001)
Beauty and the Beast (Oct 2002)
The Lion King (Oct 2003)
Aladdin (Oct 2004)
Bambi (March 2005) - two platinum titles a year beginning in 2005
Cinderella (Oct 2005)
Lady & Tramp (March 2006)
The Little Mermaid (Oct 2006)
Jungle Book (March 2007)
101 Dalmations (Oct 2007)

Platinum Cycle 2 (Additional 4 and rerelease of original 10)

Pinocchio (March 2008)
Snow White (Oct 2008) - rereleased after a 7 year moratorium
Peter Pan (March 2009)
Beauty and the Beast (Oct 2009) - rereleased after a 7 year moratorium
Sleeping Beauty (March 2010)
The Lion King (Oct 2010) - rereleased after a 7 year moratorium
Fantasia (March 2011)
Aladdin (Oct 2011)
Bambi (March 2012)
Cinderella (Oct 2012)
Lady & Tramp (March 2013)
The Little Mermaid (Oct 2013)
Jungle Book (March 2014)
101 Dalmations (Oct 2014)

Why are there now 14 (instead of 10) titles in the Disney platinum line-up?

Because previously Disney was planning to put their titles under a 10 year moratorium plan and were going to be releasing 1 best-selling title per year for a total of 10 platinums.

But due to the possibility of a switch to HD-DVD in the near future (2007?), they decided to speed up their release cycle so that they can get out all their platinum titles on DVD and then again on HD-DVD. In order to get all their titles out in both formats, they had to reduce their moratorium period to 7 years and will be releasing 2 titles per year for a total of 14 platinums.

why is the lionking two times in the list

they are going to release the Lion King for the first time on DVD in 2003 and again on HD-DVD in 2010 (after putting it in the vault for seven years).

it makes sense for them to re-release because they make money all over again from both those who originally had the movie as a earlier format AND from new generations of Disney fans. their re-releases also serve as a launchpad for sequels and merchandise related to the movie.

Well, we are only doing predictions, Disney hasn't decided anything official yet.

I need to read about this High Definition DVD. It looks like I'll need to repurchase my Lion King DVD seven years from now if I get an HD-DVD player. I just read that one company plans to make an HD-DVD player next year. Yay!

Thanks for the info Lady. I just realized that this thread is a year old. Happy Birthday thread!

I'm sorry, but there is no way Disney will release any of their Platinum films on HD-DVD in 2007 (or thereabouts). There simply won't be enough installed players to justify releasing a big movie. Disney's only interest is in selling movies, to as many people as possible, not driving hardware sales.

However, Columbia (Sony) and Universal(GE) have a vested interest in selling the hardware, so it is possible their big titles will be available on HD-DVD at this time.

Peter Pan is not included, only ten title are chosen for the Plantinum Edition (and you got them all)

Now I understand how you can be so confused. If you go to the release types page you will learn that only the ten top selling movies are being considered a Plantinum Editions. The problem is that all these 10 dvds are known to only have a tiny "Plantinum Edition" banner on the top of the case but the rest of the case and the marketing of the DVD will be completely bombarded with the term "Special Edition" thus you have confusion!

It occured to me today where the hell the phrase "Plantinum Edition" came from. I learned from an episode of South Park that when a band manages to sell 1 million copies they are awarded the plantinum album. The titles chosen to be part of the Plantinum Edition are Disney's top 10 biggest selling titles.

Although I think they shouldve added more titles like Peter Pan and Fantasia, maybe they could be placed in the Masterpiece Edition

thats a weird way to learn it lol and btw, more than just those 10 sold over 1 million so i don't think thats the reason
