Will we ever see a Special Edition Bedknobs and Broomsticks?

Do you think they will release a special edition bedknobs and broomsticks? They released the restored version of this movie as a gold collection 1-disc set in 2001.

Given that they are releasing Mary Poppins in 2004 as a special edition dvd (after having released it as a gold collection in 2000), can I hope for a special edition for bedknobs and broomsticks in 2005?

I kind of doubt they'd release a 2-Disc SE of it. I just don't think its popular enough. But I would expect a re-release anyway, since the Gold Collection line is really fading away - perhaps a re-release similar to what they did with Peter Pan and Oliver & Company in R1.

Although I'm quite satisfied with the current DVD, I'd like to see Bedknobs go 2-disc SE, especially given that since it's a long film, moving bonus material to disc 2 would make the picture look even better than it currently does. The only things they really need to include are an audio commentary with Angela Lansbury and someone else involved with the film, perhaps a brand-new "making of" documentary that talks about the actual production more than the current (but still great) featurette does, and maybe a more in-depth gallery. Besides that, we've got enough. I'd like for it to go like this:

DISC 1:
- Audio Commentary with Angela Lansbury and ??? (Sherman Bros., perhaps?)
- "The Worm Turns" Short
- "The Vanishing Prarie" Short (dunno which of these shorts played with the film)

DISC 2:
- New Behind-the-Scenes Documentary
- "Music Magic" TV Special-Unedited*
- "A Step in the Right Direction" Deleted Number
- Tests (Screen, Costume, Make-Up, Special Effects, etc.)
- "Portobello Road" Recording Session (hopefully longer version and perhaps more sessions like this?)
- Storyboard to Film and/or Live Action to Live Action/Animation Comparisons
- Promotional TV Special(s)/TV intros, etc.
- Footage from the Premiere and/or 25th Anniversary Reunion
- Galleries (Concept Art, Storyboards, Production Photos, Promotional, and Merchandise)
- Theatrical Trailers

*the one on the DVD originated from Disney Channel's celebration of the movie's 25th and I'm positive there was stuff in the special not on the DVD including a narrator and Angela discussing the deletion of "Step in the Right Direction" more than she does on the DVD.

Good list Disneykid, but I'd also like the first disc to have a branching version so you can watch it with or without the restored footage.

is not restored footage, the original footage is lost. they found snapshoots that they fotographed together to put the deleted song back together but it not all there so is impossible to put it back in the film

I'm not talking about A Step in the Right Direction. They also added more footage to the movie.

In 1996, in honor of the film's 25th anniversary, the film was restored to a length of 139 minutes, close to the originally intended length (the film had been cut to 117 minutes against the wishes of its makers before its premiere). This version has the following scenes reinstated:

A guardsman (played by Arthur Malet) harasses Captain Greer, and Mrs. Hobday tries to clear things out (leading into the song "The Old Home Guard")

A Home Guard sergeant asking for permission to dismiss the marching parade (immediately after "The Old Home Guard" ends)

Mr. Jelk tells Mrs. Hobday of his plans to buy Miss Price's house.

At dinner time, the children tell Miss Price of how they were orphaned.

Miss Price notes that mango-wurzel jam is available at the dinner table.

Miss Price tells the children that no one has ever seen her workroom before.

As Mr. Jelk brings a letter to Miss Price (the one which informs her that the Emelius Browne Correspondence College of Witchcraft has closed), he tries to get into the house and talk to her, but she politely sends him away.

When Miss Price asks Paul for the bedknob back to get to London, Charlie attempts to extort some money from her.

After "The Age of Not Believing" is sung, Paul tries to get the bed to fly, but Miss Price forgot to tell him to tell the knob where to take them.

When the children find Mr. Browne on the streets of London, they take the bed with them and follow him.

The entire song "With a Flair."

When Miss Price says "we'd be delighted [to join Mr. Browne for luncheon]," Mr. Browne asks if the children belong to her.

At the townhouse where Mr. Browne is staying, Miss Price explains to her what substitutiary locomotion is and why she wants the spell.

The song "Eglantine" is restored to its entirety.

The song "Portobello Road" is restored to its entirety, as its subsequent dance sequence.

Mr. Browne tells Swinburne that the bed once belonged to royalty and is being offered to the Bookman as a present.

Mr. Browne rebuffs the Bookman's offer to swap sections of the book, but relents when he is threatened.

A scene in the village store where Mrs. Hobday meets Mr. Browne and suggests to him that he should marry Miss Price. Mr. Jelk walks in and overhears them.

The song "Nobody's Problem's for Me," is reinstated after Mr. Browne leaves the house.

I too want a DVD that has both versions of the film on it, the restored version is nice to see all the extra scenes but the voices do my nutt!

I think we can definitely count on a SE of this: if they're going to release obscure titles like Darby O'Gill and Three Lives of Thomasina, I think they can release this.

It was both, actually. The spine says Gold Classic and Bedknobs is considered part of the GC line, but the front cover, insert, and disc art all say 30th Anniversary Edition. Another case of Disney making things difficult.

Great idea for bonus features, disneykid.

I'm thinking/hoping there will probably be a 2-disc in 2006, as it would be the 35th Anniversary (the 2001 was the 30th Anniversary). Also, a really coolness idea could be to get the kids back and do a short "Where Are They Now?" piece. Also, a David Tomlinson tribute could be good too.

I don't think I've ever seen the pre-restored Bedknobs and Broomsticks. If I did, I probably don't remember it. But I hope if they do have the "two-version" set, that they keep in "Nobody's Problems" on both versions, as it's such a fitting song.

Well, if they include the theatrical version on the a future SE, I can tell you that "Nobody's Problems" definitely won't be a part of it. The list Netty posted earlier in this thread states all of the stuff restored for the extended version, including that song. I really hope we see this go 2-disc soon; they need to start conducting interviews with Angela Lansbury and everyone else involved while they're still alive. Considering how fascinating this movie's background is, making a comprehensive 2-disc similar to (or even better than) my fake lisy would be simple.

What a great thread! I really hope and even expect to see this, though I think Pete's Dragon would come along first, as it's more popular than Bedknobs. After Mary Poppins, they will be looking to release another 2-disc edition of one of their classic live-action musicals, and I think these two are the next logical choices. They, along with Poppins, also happen to be my favorite! :D

DK's list would make a great set, and I also really like Netty's idea of branching so that I can watch it as I first saw it on VHS. I keep my VHS around for just that reason. I greatly prefer the restored version, but it's nice to have the version I grew up with.

I'd also want a Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix and some new supplements. Maybe a new song with Angela Lansbury, as we're seeing on the Poppins set? I'd also like to see an interview with the children all grown up now, and maybe some of the other characters too. A new short would be cool, too.

DK, if you're right about extra features from the Disney Channel, I'd want those ported over as well.

And, of course, a slip-cover! ;)
