Since Disney supports Blu-Ray what Disney animated film do you think will look best in this new format (High Defination, etc) I think The Lion King would look awesome in it -- Aladdin too. Some of the older stuff like Alice In Wonderland I can never picture having true High Defination quality.

First off, I’m not a big HD person, in fact I think DVD quality is just fine for me, so...

IMO, I think that pretty soon we are going to start upgrading video quality for no apparent reason. If you ask me, the difference between Digital and HDTV aren’t that noticeable (at least to me). I still say it’s stupid to buy new hardware and discs and stuff just because we will be getting a few more lines of resolution. Yes, I understand the picture will be better but pretty soon no one is going to be able to notice.

And to answer the question, I think they will look the same as on regular DVD.

It amuses me how some people can't see the difference between digital and HDTV, or EDTV and HDTV. My mother is one of those people, so I'm not being mean. It's just amusing to me because the difference is night and day to me. Between digital and HDTV is a GIGANTIC difference. Between EDTV and HDTV it isn't as big, but it is certainly noticeable at times.

As for continuous improvements... I think we're knocking at the door of at-home virtual reality. As it stands right now, HDTV looks better than real life half the time. The two dimensional TV/movie experience has been taken about as far as it's gonna go effen you ask me.

Blu-ray disc will look 6-7 times better bigger and sharper than 16:9 enhanced DVDs and 5 to 8 times 4:3 DVDs

The older stuff like Academy shot Alice In Wonderland is High Resolution stuff cus they were shot in 35mm film and film resolution can go actually higher than HDTV.

Also most HDTV (99%) displays/projectors you've seen till now are just displaying a 720p image or at the most a 1080interlaced image so very few people have seen true Blu-ray 1080progressive images which are more than TWICE as sharp an big as 720p/1080i

Don't think that cus movies are "old" they won't look stunning on Blu-ray.

The Lord of the Rings film negative is only 10 millimeters high, while Alice's is 15 millimeters high. Furthermore animated films like Alice were shot in the 3 strip Technicolor format so actually the negative area is 15mm + 15mm + 15mm = 45mm of negative for one single frame of Alice in a sense. So even tho the film emulsions of the day might not be as advanced as today's emulsions the old film's quality still holds up cus of the larger negative area. This is of course if the mastering dudes know what they're doing when they transfer the films

Most of the exposure one has to older films is from videotapes broadcast prints, and now DVDs which are about 16mm quality. "Old" movies I've seen in the Cinema when projected properly have looked fine and these are optical prints we're looking at, not digital scans directly made from the original camera negative

anger is pointless, just for you , Blu-ray is a new high density disc format that can hold up to 70mm film quality on a disc and uncompressed high resolution 7.1 audio. It uses a blue laser instead of a red one like DVD does so it can pack more data, hence more resolution, supplements, and features; and it's gonna be launched in the US in the near future. (Not to be confused with hd-dvd which is a lamo half powered attempt ). There's lots of threads on UD about Blu-ray. Maybe one day i'll post more piccies

Btw since i'm blu-raying, the latest news is that Lions Gate (Total Recall, Terminator2, Dirty Dancing, etc) and Universal Music Group have joined Blu-ray

Yeah, I read that. I think Blu-Ray will win the battle if it can play regular DVDs. Only because it is nearly impossible to make copies of. I will not purhcase my Blu-Ray player when it comes out (Probably be like $1,000, few years it would be cheep) so that's what I'll wait for. I may start to buy some blu-ray stuff before I get the player though.

Hmm I believe that I will stick with my dvd player and dvds till this Blu-Ray proves itself and comes down considerably in price.

Listen to deathie mouse. He knows what he's talking about. The only reason I would ever not get Blu-Ray is if the movies I want weren't able to play on them and if they were too expensive. I really want to see how Walt Disney's Cinderella looks on Blu-Ray! Also, Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty is a true, beautiful work of art with extremely detailed backgrounds. I must see that on Blu-ray, too! So I can't wait. It's true Disney is doing Blu-Ray, right?

I think Disney shows like Wuzzles, Gummi Bears, DuckTales, Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, Tale Spin, Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, etc. should all be release on Blu-Ray!!!!

It's simple, really. 35mm film has more detail in it than a normal TV, VHS or even DVD can represent - especially when the original picture was in the 4:3 ratio on the film, because you've got a taller picture on the film.

So a good high-definition transfer of those old 35mm negatives should produce finer detail if you watch it on a blu-ray disc connected to a high-definition TV set. (If you watch it on your standard TV, it won't make much difference.) If you think the current DVDs are good, the hi-def versions on a good quality big screen should blow you away.
(Shooting in hi-def is expensive and a nuisance, but when it's done properly the pictures are gorgeous!)

When Disney does the super-boffo restorations of films like Snow White, they do all the film scanning at high definition, and I'm sure I remember hearing that in addition to putting the result back out to film, they keep a hi-def tape of the restored master for future use.

I woulda thought a dvdjunkie would get that. I got 90% of it. So deathie where are we at as far as blu-ray vs HDVD. Who has signed up for what format?
