From Hollywood Reporter:

Joe Ranft, Pixar Animation's head of story, 45

By Sheigh Crabtree and Cynthia Littleton
Joe Ranft, Pixar Animation Studios' head of story and a founding member of the animation company's creative team, died Tuesday afternoon in a car accident in Mendocino County, Calif. He was 45.

"Joe was an important and beloved member of the Pixar family, and his loss is of great sorrow to all of us and to the animation industry as a whole," Pixar said in a statement Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the Mendocino County Sheriff-Coroner's Office confirmed Ranft was one of two people who died when their car veered off the road while traveling northbound on Highway 1.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at about 3 p.m. Tuesday as the driver of the 2004 Honda Element tried to regain control of the car after swerving when he headed into a tight left curve. The car plunged 130 feet over the side into the ocean, the CHP said.

The driver, identified by the coroner's office as Elegba Earl, 32, of Los Angeles, was also killed in the crash. The third person in the car, identified by the CHP as Eric Frierson, 39, of Los Angeles, survived by climbing through the car's sun roof. He was hospitalized with moderate injuries at Mendocino Coast Hospital, according to Officer Robert Simas of the CHP office in Ukiah, Calif.

Ranft worked in both story development and as a storyboard artist at Pixar for the past decade. He was a co-writer on 1995's "Toy Story," for which he earned an Oscar nomination, and 1998's "A Bug's Life." Before Pixar, Ranft was a leading member of the story department at Walt Disney Feature Animation, where he was a writer on 1991's "Beauty and the Beast" and 1994's "The Lion King."

Ranft also voiced key Pixar characters such as Heimlich in "Bug's" and Wheezy the Penguin in "Toy Story 2."

Born in Southern California in 1960, Ranft was a classmate of director John Lasseter's at the California Institute of the Arts in the 1970s. After two years at CalArts, he joined Disney in 1980. He joined Pixar in 1992.

"Joe was a big part of Pixar's soul," a Pixar spokesperson said.

What sad news, particularly having just watched him in one of the Toy Story bonus features. His story pitches on the Pixar DVDs were always a riot, and the quirky characters he voiced are among the studio's most endearing. :(

Rest In Peace Joe

Wow, he worked on a lot of successful films. That's pretty cool how he went from Disney to Pixar and still had more successes.

I wonder if he did any voices in Cars.

THAT IS SHOCKING! :o

A car-accident is such a painful way to die. He did alot of great voices! Including Heimlich from A Bug's Life. He also did writing for The Lion King!

Ever since these Disney legends have been falling like flies I've expected at least one more person to die who was a Disney legend but I never would've guess it would be him since he was young!

R.I.P! :(

EDIT: Joe Ranft

He did even more than I thought he did. I will sure miss him since he was a voice in every Pixar film to date!

Wow you took the words right out of my mouth. This is really sad news the more Disney Legends die the older I feel and for some reaons it seems like death becomes even more scary. Joe Ranft seemed to live a very fruitful life and he add spice to many of our favorite Disney/ Pixar movies. may his soul R.I.P :( .

Holy crap, that's awful news! I loved watching him in the bonus materials in Ultimate Toy Box and A Bug's Life: Collector's Edition. I'll be praying for his family and the folks at Pixar. :( I think I'll watch A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and Finding Nemo on consecutive nights in memoriam.

That's really horrible news. Not only did he died so young, he died in a car crash which must be a painful way to die . Heimlich was my favorite character in Bugs Life (I had a stuff animal of him when I was little) and still is. My heart goes out to his friends and family. R.I.P.

I just read this on Animated News... can't believe it. What a terrible loss - for his family, for the Pixar team, for animation, and for film in general. He was one of the great story men of our time. Joe had so much left to give - what a sad tragedy.

I hope that his family finds some degree of comfort in knowing that Joe made the world a better place than it would have been without him. He left stories behind that will be enjoyed forever. Farewell, Joe... and thank you.

wow, this is pretty sad news. I knew he was the guy who voiced some Pixar characters but I didn't know he did a lot for Disney too. I'm sure we'll see something about this at the ending of Cars... it'll probaply be dedicated to him or something. Very sad indeed.

I don't know how I missed this thread, but this is terrible news. He was a great man who contributed much to PIXAR. The movies won't quite be the same without him. Man, being trapped underwater in a car; in my opinion, that's the scariest way to die. I hope they insert a "In memory of..." part in the ending credits for Cars.

R.I.P. Joe Ranft, you will be greatly missed.

There are several excellent articles at www.cartoonresearch.com

He was heavily involved in charitable works. At the time of his death he was taking young men who had troubled youths to a retreat so they could learn some new skills and turn their lives around.

Time to put on the Billy Joel and sing along "Only the good die young"

I was totally oblivious to all this when it happened, since I was vacationing in California to visit with my mom's family.

The news hit me like a brick on Thursday, the one day I happened to be at Disneyland. My boyfriend actually called me from home early in the day, asking me if I knew who Joe Ranft was, and I was like, "Oh yeah, big guy at Pixar; pop in some Toy Story bonus features if you wanna see him. Why?" At first he just said he was wondering if I knew who he was because he didn't want to put a damper on things, but he called back again toward the end of the day and told me the news. I was in shock.

It's such a tragic loss for his family and for his fellow co-workers and good friends at Pixar. And at such a young age. :(

He made so many contributions not only to Pixar and Disney, but to the film industry itself. He will be sorely missed.

Well, all I do know is that he's in a better place now. Perhaps he's shaking the hand of Walt Disney as we speak?
