What's After Platinum Edition?

I searched the forum and could not find a thread having to do with this so here it goes. What do you think will be the next series of Disney releases after Paltinum? They are already booked for atleast another two years. Do you think that the HD DVD will become popular enough in less then a year to replace DVD? I hope not! I hope HD-DVD and Blu-Ray fale so I don't have to start buying those. lol What is the next most valuable thing after Platinum? lol Also why are they only have 14 titles? Why not keep going with more and more DVDs? That would be very nice. I would like to see Hercules: Platinum Edition.

Uranium Edition. ;)
Actually, I don't know but that's a very good question. I mean that's like asking what are you gonna be when you grow up. You don't know for sure but I wouldn't worry about it now not all of the Platinum Editions are out yet. Therefore, I don't think Disney is concerned about it either.

After 2007, the original ten will be released and Disney will probably cycle through the next four. Once all 14 are out, the process begins again. It's pretty conceivable that a re-release of <i>Snow White</i> in 2011 on say, DVD and high definition DVD, with some new bonus material, further digital restoration/remastering, and a return to being in-print for the first time in nearly a decade would garner a significant amount of interest. Think of how many people here are excited to hear about re-releases of <i>The Emperor's New Groove</i>, <i>The Parent Trap</i>, and <i>Old Yeller</i> and those were released in 2001 and 2002 and never went out of print until now.

Plus I'm sure Disney will continue to revisit its non-Platinum titles now and again, as they have been doing for the past few years.

There won't be one. Platinum Edition is reserved for what Disney considers to be their best (I know, it's highest grossing, but I think they consider them to be their best as well).

Personally, I'd love all the classics to become Platinums, or at least get the same treatment as them.

By the way Luke, do you really think the restoration for Snow White can get any better? Or were you just using that as an example?

With a substantially higher resolution, anything can look better. Now <i>Snow White</i> is a title that many may feel looks "good enough" on DVD. But DVD offers just a tiny portion of film's resolution and on a high-definition television and format, there will be room for improvement.

Well who knows how things will be in another 5 years? I'm sure some new technology will come along that will make this "crappy" version of Snow White look amazing! I do not mean that our current one looks crappy, but compared to what we will get in a few years, I'm sure it will! lol

Maybe Disney will make a new line called "Gold Deluxe Edition"

But like Luke said it will just repeat the cycle after all 14 Platinum are release.

Yeah I missed out on most of the Platinum Editions (Only own 1, Aladdin) but I will buy them when they come out. For X-Mas I will get Lion King (Still at various sites)

In music after platinum is diamond. So next will probably be "Diamond Edition or Collection"

I hope they don't come out with any other formats either cuz I'm very content with DVD right now.

I can't imagine a Diamon Collection. lol Not that you are wrong, just a series of DVDs under Diamond sounds out of wack. I bet soon Disney will have to make up its own "valuable" rocks. lol

I think that sounds right. I think it would sound kinda cool to have Diamond Editions of The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty etc. It's so hard to imagine what Disney has in store for us. Now I wonder...if they spent sooo much money on the restorations and production of the Platinum editions, how can they take it furhter? Haven't they done all the research they could for those movies? Well obviosuly, some laserdisc material isn't on them so they better put that over.
No one knows what Disney's next big line is going to be, but it will probably be great! They never cease to amuse us! :P

I think that they should drop the platinum idea and just release two disc editions or at least a packed one disc edition of the animated movies without any biased title (I'll include Mary Poppins and the like as well, along with Dinosaur). However, to add flavour, they could give the DVDs three little groups to fall into depending on their genre (with the banner "a time for a [insert film genre] adventure"). There'd be "fantasy" (which could also include sci-fi material like Atlantis), "animal" and "musical", which could actually account for other and is used for the live action combo films or package films. The top of the box would herald the Walt era films as "Walt Disney's" or "Walt Disney's Classic" and for the post Walt films, "Walt Disney Pictures Presents" or for the earlier post Walt (pre Black Cauldron), "Walt Disney Productions Presents" (as that is what is written on the film's title card).

Maybe they will release them as the "Disney Classics" Collection. But the Diamond Collection sounds pretty close.

I think HD DVD would be the next logical release for these titles (BluRay).

I doubt Disney would go anything higher than platinum with the current DVD format.

Fox released Marilyn Monroe movies under the "Diamond Collection", but it sound good for Disney too.

As for me, I'm thinking sarcastically and saying after Platinum, Disney will release "Smellovision Edition", where you can smell along with the characters like you were really there. Imagine, smelling the murky and dark forest with Snow White, or take in the wonderful scents of winter with Belle. Heck, why not inhale the odious stench of Pumbaa as well?

Hmmm...it makes me wonder what the Fantasia movies will smell like. ;)

Dude, Fantasia's totally going to be a sweet.

I shudder to think what Home on the Range will smell like.

Can't wait for the Smellovision Edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

That Smellovision thing is funny!

Yea, I really can't see Disney's movies that get the best treatment being called anything other than Platinum, but maybe they will do something. If they do something else besides call them Platinum, I think they should create their own name, like the Disney Magic Collection or maybe even the Disney Elite Collection or something. Because things like Diamond Collection have already been taken. In fact, Miramax just started releasing some DVDs in their own Platinum Line, like for The Mask.

"Super Duper Unique Fantastic Limited Disney Edition" is the next logical step.
