THE FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN?
Just recieved this sad news from down under:
I am a regular reader of your "Cartoon Brew" website, and an animator at DisneyToon Studio's Australia. I have some breaking news for you: At 3pm today (Monday 25 July) the entire studio was summoned for a staff meeting in which we told by the General Manager Phil Oakes that upon completion of our next production "Cinderella 3", DisneyToon Studio's Australia will be closing down after 17 years. They have cited current business needs and production schedules as the cause. So Disney hand drawn animation now ceases to exist.

At least no more cheapened 2D products. Always look on the bright side!

Yes, but now we will probably have 3D CGI remakes of Snow White, Dumbo, Little Mermaid & the Lion King & Pixar Cheapquels.

When will all of this just get sorted out.
We dont want cheap sequels to every animated classic, although they have pretty much covered everything but to end 2D animation altogether? Thats being abit drastic. As others have said i dont even think that will be the end of the sequels.....they'll just start with CGI sequels, then we have the problem all over again.
Although there is no official word on wether or not this is true, i wouldnt put it past Disney.

Someone somewhere in that company needs to get a grip of whats going on, CGI films arent something new and exciting, actually its been 10 years since the first CGI film was released and look how many there have been since then. A decent animated film needs decent characters, good animation and one hell of a storyline. Not just some fart jokes and an ok storyline. But then i really dont want to start having a go at Disney just yet until i finally see Chicken Little, if CL bombs and has bad reviews then the fact is Disney are in trouble. Hmmmmm wait i've gone right off the point here

i'll end this now lol!!

I hope it'll cheapen CG a bit so it would become as available as 2D. Then audience will start judging the movie by the story, not the medium.

Well, at least they're going out with a bang!
Now we have to make way for all the 3-D sequels for the animated classics with the graphics from
Twice Upon a Christmas. Grrrrrrrrreat. This is terrible news.

I'm not saying it was bad; I'm just saying the graphics.......left much to be desired, let's say that.

i really hope this is a lie. DisneyToon Studio's Australia has been getting better and better these days. I mean sure story lines have been kinda weak, but the animation has been growing stronger with each DTV sequel in my opinion.
I just don't see a point in stopping 2D animation. it's something that everyone still enjoys and loves. i think that if disney were to actually put in the time and effort and money they could produce a 2D film like the classics that would simply blow away and 3D film. besides there are things with 2D animation that you would never be able to do with a computer!

I just hope there'll be two or three more years of Walt Disney Treasures DVDs. After that I don't care what they do any more.

2-D to die?

Well, Jim Hill said that after DisneyToon Studios in Australia shuts down, Disney would have the 2-D animation be done in Taipei, Tokyo, and Manila. The source Jim Hill talked to said that they produce "high quality footage" for less money. So maybe it won't be so bad, and 2-D animation won't die. But I have a feeling it won't be as good as Australia's work. The sad thing is all the people in DisneyToon Studios Australia will lose their jobs. Disney did say they would give 300 jobs to Australians for other things...but what?
