Muppet Movie SEs on the Way!

Well if you haven't checked the front page yet, then do so now! Apparently Kermit is turning 50 (wow- I had no idea), and to honor that, Disney is releasing restored and remastered Special Edition DVDs of four Muppet movies! Woohoo!!!
The 4 movies being re-released are:
The Muppet Movie (1979)
The Great Muppet Caper (1981)
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Muppet Treasure Island (1996)
The latter two were already available from Disney DVD, but were pan-and-scan. It'll be nice to have proper Disney Special Editions of all of them, and Luke's update suggests that these will be OAR.
If these sell well (and I'm sure they will), then they will probably pave the way for a 2006 release of The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) and Muppets in Space (1999).
Maybe we'll even eventually get re-releases of It's A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie (2002) and some of the specials like A Muppet Family Christmas (1987), Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas (1977), and Kermit's Swamp Years: The Real Story Behind Kermit the Frog's Early Years (2002). And as long as they've got a SE of "The Muppet Show" coming out, why not "Muppets Tonight" and "Muppet Babies" as well?
The big question is, if Disney does plan on putting all of the Muppets movies on Special Edition DVD (and I think they do), will Muppet Wizard of Oz be re-released, or will this upcoming release serve as its SE?
I can't wait to get the press release and release date for these- it's very exciting news. What features would everyone like to see?
Happy Birthday, Kermit!

I agree with you that it's quite the exciting news. 'Tis turning out to be The Year of The Muppet...on Disney DVD. I've bought the six theatrical movies over the years and the extras on Disney's (purchased reluctantly) are the most fun - I surely hope they're carried over and I see no reason why they wouldn't be. The cast commentary on Muppets From Space is also a keeper if/when that is revisited. From Sony's DVDs of the first three movies the "Muppetisms" are sort of fun but I feel like there are many more that we never got to see; the camera test on the original film's DVD is pretty neat too.
I'd love for these re-releases to employ the Muppets on the menus (the way they were on Disney's two DVDs) - much more fun and interactive than a standard still or animated menu. As for other bonus features, whatever archival footage there is, including the trailers, would be nice. Columbia/TriStar never put too much effort into the picture quality or bonus features and I felt that Disney was very close to treating them right - except for not offering them in 16x9 widescreen. If the spirited supplements and original ratios can meld together, these should definitely be fun (and the definitive home video releases of these movies).
Having loved Muppet*Vision 3-D, it'd be neat if Disney could work in something about that somewhere, even if it's not particularly relevant to any specific theatrical movie.

Whoohoo!
(ya know, we really need some muppet icons...)
I have The Muppet Movie, Muppets Take Manhattan, and Muppets in Space, but I have had a hard time tracking down The Great Muppet Caper...
As for the Christmas Carol and Treasure Island, I refused to buy the P&S versions...

I bought
The Muppet Movie,
The Muppets Take Manhattan, and
The Great Muppet Caper from Wal-mart last year for $7 each. I also got
Muppets From Space from Wal-mart for $6. I didn't like
Caper very much, so I ended up trading it in at Gamestop. Now I see how much it goes for on eBay and I kick myself.
I, too, refused to buy the P&S Disney movies. I'm very excited for this news, as I have wanted to get
Treasure Island and
Christmas Carol for a while now.

Muppet*Vision 3-D (or "4-D" as it was once called) is one of my very favorite things at Disney World... I'm glad you liked it. The friend who just went to WDW with me was very much anti-Muppets, but I made him go in and watch it and he ended up loving it and has changed his attitude towards them- yay! I'd love to see MV3D covered in a bonus feature somewhere. I think the most likely ones to do so are The Muppet Movie or The Muppet Show S1

Same for me. I only own two Muppets DVDs (Space and Very Merry), and it kills me! I've come close to caving in and buying the others many times, but I've held out, always thinking that SEs from Disney would be just around the corner. Finally, they are coming (or at least some of them are).
Are these expected to be single discers? Would there be enough material for 2 discs to be a possibility? Seems like there would be, at least for some of them. But then, I would think that they'll either all be 1 Disc or all be 2 Discs.

Excuse me for getting off-topic but Luke I thought you "never" been to a Disney theme park! YOU'RE NOT LUKE!!! YOU ARE AN IMPOSTER!
Getting back on topic- If I do get this, I'll just be getting The Muppet Movie (1979)!
And Aaron you had a friend who was anti-Muppets? How could anyone be anti-Muppets?

Well I'm just glad he changed!

Fantastic news. Probabaly wont upgrade what I already have but for the ones I have put off buying that is great.
Timon - Luke never said he had been to a theme park in his post. Although, he should really go.
Muppet Vision 3D - I thought it was really bad and that animated character ruined the show. I found the pre show much more entertaining.

I know he didn't say this on his post, but there were several times where he said something like "Unfortunatly I haven't been to Disney World or Disneyland". Maybe he went just recently!
As for Muppet Vision 3D that's my second favorite 3D show(my favorite is It's Tough to Be A Bug

). I thought the muppets were all at there very best and the 3D guy wasn't that bad, in fact I thought he was pretty funny. And the pre-show was great. I especially liked all the hidden jokes where the show took place. Did you know that this was the last thing Jim Henson worked on before he died?

Yay, great news! The aspect ratio/lack of features issues were what was keeping me from buying these. I'll definitely pick up The Muppet Movie and Muppet Christmas Carol, and I'll think about Great Muppet Caper and Muppet Treasure Island. It's a shame Muppets Take Manhattan isn't on that list. That's one I'd definitely buy.

There's even an unused song in the Muppet Christmas Carol film they can use. I wonder if it was filmed? If not, they'd have to record it...unless a demo exists...

Oh yes, and I forgot to mention this in my post, but I would appreciate if they let you choose between the theatrical and extended home video versions of Muppet Christmas Carol. It's not that the restored song is bad, it's just that it really does slow down the film and I don't think they were entirely wrong to cut it from the theatrical release.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost bought Muppet Treasure Island at the mall a while ago but I resisted from the mere news that Disney bought the muppets! Now Disney's releasing SE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't know Kermit was 50 either! When is the actual day? Anyone know? Is this when the DVDs will be released? I can't wait! I can't wait! Kram Nebuer needs to save more money!
I already have Kermit's Swamp Years and Muppets Take Manhattan both from Wal-Mart for $5.50! Why on earth were they in the dirt cheap bin? Anyhow, it was good news for me and apparently the some of the only ones w/o a planned Disney SE are the ones I have. Weird!

Good gravy, now I'm not hoping for a Muppets Disney World DVD, I'm expecting it!

I hope the old TV special comes out of the vaults or the WDW Yesterland limbo. What I would predict for a Muppets WDW DVD:
(picture not available...)
~ The Muppets at Walt Disney World (1990)

~ Here Come the Muppets (It was a live show with huge Muppets when MV3D opened. We have some of it taped from 1991)
~ The Making of Muppet*Vision 3D [4D]

You guys, he's been gone some of this week and last and the weekend for Disneyland's 50th Anniversary!?! Where have you been?

Anyhow, LUke probably saw MuppetVision at CA Adventure since they have it there in Hollywood Pictures Backlot or whatever the Studio section is called.

Speaking of specials, I'd really like to see Hey, Cinderella and The Frog Prince released to DVD, as well. I have Hey, Cinderella on VHS, but I haven't seen Frog Prince in years. Both are really great and should be used (along with Muppet Christmas Carol) as examples of how to approach classic material with the Muppets (Wizard of Oz, I'm talking to you).

Ah, thanks. I've never seen it, so I'll probably pick it up. Looks like Disney doesn't own this one, though, so it won't be coming from them, and as a result, it will have the bookends that featured Kermit cut out of it. Minor and understandable, but annoying nonetheless.

I'm glad they're releasing their OOP Muppet movies! They're so expensive on EBAY.

not always in a mean Disney still does own Kermit and he appears on Sesame Street which is not part of the Muppets that they bought. It says never before seen footage maybe this is in the full version as aired on television

but Muppets family Christmas needs it WAY more it looks like the people who now own FR now own jug band Christmas.
