I've just spent an hour or so writing up a mini essay for a Live Journal community on Mary Blair's Disney work. It's been posted and I've recieved a comment on it, yet I am wondering about general opinions about it. I've not written any real art analyses for quite a while, and I'm worried if I'm a bit rusty so I'm wondering if any of you could give me some thoughts on it, possibly with some constructive criticism if you feel it is needed (I'd rather have that than false "wow, that essay is awesome!" like comments). There are pictures in it to use as general guides to her work, which I must say are lovely. And if this is in the wrong forum, simply move it to the correct one.

Oh man, Wonder, that reminded me of 3 years ago when I took Intro to Art and we had to analyze all these paintings.

My favorite picture/analysis was Lady Tremaine's coach at the arrival of their house. You could also point out how the coachman and horse are drawn--in a droopy manner that furthur emphasizes the mood of the artwork. There are no bright colors shown at all, except for the 'red' door which could symbolize (as you mentioned) the attack of Cinderella & her dress by her <strike>stupid</strike>step sisters.

But the one that intrigues me most is the rabbit hole and the "cute cat." It's simple, but I think there's more to it that I can't quite put a finger on. Yea, the colors are different: the dramatic change from a bright shade of blue to a dreary red shows the mood of the world she's entering (wait, you said that). Maybe the cat represents curiosity? And then that change from a small entrance, and as you continue going down the hole, it becomes bigger. You know like the world Alice will be entering is something much bigger than she expected filled with unknown possibilities. Oh, something like that.

Such fascinating art; that Art 101 would've been much more interesting if we studied her work.

I think you managed to get the mood/symbolism of her paintings, but maybe there's more more more to analyze! wowweeee!
