So do I! I plan to re-read it when I'm done with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (my fave of that series) again just because it's started to be a kind of tradition since the Summer of '04 when waiting for the film, and every Christmas since. I still like Christmas with the Kranks, my family seems to have it in high regard, for some reason, placing it in with Home Alone and Christmas Vacation, but I'll be damned if the book is not leagues better. In any case, long live Luther Krank!
The book is definitely leagues better than the movie. The problem with the movie is that it tried to intentionally be a comedy with dramatic moments, rather than a drama with comedic moments. Had they done the latter (and perhaps got better leads), it could have easily become a timeless Christmas film. I hold the film in high regard mainly because I love train wrecks, and this is one of the biggest.
pap64 wrote:I never read the book so I can't say if the movie is true to the book
For the most part, the story elements are true to the book (we do lose a few throwaway scenes and characters, but other than that...). However, the entire theme and atmosphere of the book is lost for the reason I said above (it tries to be a comedy). The few and far between elements that were original (Luther's botox, Nora's search for ham, Marty being Santa, the burglar that Spike lets in the house, etc.) were stupid and rather unnecessary. I would have preferred seeing Luther's only supporter (Yank Slader) and the rejection of fruitcakes by the firemen.
Also, Luther in the movie comes off as more heartless and selfless than he does in the book (where skipping Christmas is both an economical and personal decision).

Yeah, I could tell that there was a change of heart halfway through the film. Luther wanted to skip Christmas because he wanted to forget the fact that his only daughter was gone. When she returns, he acts rather selfishly.
BTW, was the scene in which Luther gives his tickets to the old couple in the book? I thought that was the most inspired scene in the whole movie and looked like it came right out of the book.

That's obviously not from this past Christmas Tim, or is it? I thought there was a big uproar about there not being a tree in MK this year because of a parade and a guy named Regis Fulbim,? Flibbin? Philbus? Ah, it doesn't matter.

Regis Phoebus? Regis Flange? Regis Phylum? There's too many!

I actually hadn't heard anything of the tree being taken away. I knew it was there when we went to MK on the 17th and 21st. What was the cause for the uproar about there being a Christmas tree?

It blacked the view of the parade for taping the TV special, so instead of a tree the put a stage for Regis and Kelly there. I guess after that they put one up (taping took place in early December).

I think you're both really good looking. Candy Dog I think none of us is really isn't insecure about our looks, but I think it's really ridiculous that u would be.

wtf slave2moonlight I don't see why you were complaining about needing to be really hot to find love in "The Love Topic". You're goodlooking and also cute to me.

Thanks very much Disney Duster. Unfortunately, I have never gotten that sort of reaction from any single ladies I have met, ha. Thus I'm going on 34 years now of being totally alone.

There must be something very wrong with those ladies! I, like Mike, think you're cute - so you've got two fans already. I guess you just haven't met the right gal. Keep those eyes peeled!
