I was thinking the exact same thing! Tami Tappan sings for Cinderella on the Princess CD's, Cindy III, and merchandise. IMHO she's a great match to Ilene Woods. In the beginning of the song, after Jennifer Hale speaks for Cinderella, it sounds like Tami but then it doesn't. If you listen to the high notes in that song, it does sound just like Cassidy Ladden's Aurora voice. It could also be the voice who was singing for Belle on the Kingdom of Kindness preview music video.

I truly do not understand why all the princess voices in the 'Enchanted Tales' series are so unlike the originals. It's almost like they purposely went out of their way to make sure the princesses sounded nothing like they did in the original films. All the other characters in the 'Enchanted Series' are almost perfect matches to their original voices, but not the princesses. I wonder if this was done on purpose.

Disney has several woman, currently working for them, who are near perfect matches to the princesses original voices, both speaking and singing. These woman are used for the Princess CD's, the sequels, the Princess web site, and various merchandise and games. I can't understand why Disney did not use these voices for the 'Enchanted Tales' series.

It's like they purposely wanted the princesses to sound different in 'Enchanted Tales'.

Just to recap, here are the woman who portray perfect matches of the princesses original voices:

Cinderella-
Jennifer Hale - Speaking
Tami Tappan - Singing

Snow White-
Melissa Disney - Speaking and Singing

Aurora-
Jennifer Hale - Speaking
Kim Huber - Singing
Leslie French - Singing (no longer used)

Belle-
Speaking- Paige 'O Hara
Singing - Susan Egan

These princesses still have their original voices recording new material:

Ariel-
Speaking/Singing- Jodi Benson

Jasmine-
Speaking - Linda Larkin
Singing - Lea Salonga

Pocahontas-
Speaking - Irene Berdard
Singing - Judy Kuhn

Mulan-
Speaking - Ming Na
Singing - Lea Salonga

These are the current voices on the Princess web site, princess CD's and various merchandise. They are either the oroiginal voices, or perfect matches to the originals. However, they are not used for the 'Enchanted Tales' series. Odd.

Your list confused me about Belle. Does Paige not sing for Belle anymore in media, and does Susan now? Do both still provide voices for Belle?

Sorry about the confusion. To my knowledge, Paige O' Hara no longer sings for Belle. In all media, Belle's singing voice has been Susan Egan. I have not heard Susan speak for Belle in anything besides the Princess CD's, but she has taken over the singing from Paige O' Hara.

The only exception to this was 'Disney Princess: A Christmas of Enchantment' which used all the same voices from the song, "If You Can Dream". When the song, "The 12 Days of Christmas", appeared on the 'Disney Princess Christmas Album' all the voices were replaced with those from my list above.

So Paige still always speaks for Belle, then?

To my knowledge (and I keep insane records of the voices, lol), Yes, Paige still does all the speaking for Belle. I honestly thought she was going to be 100% replaced with Susan Egan. But on the new Princess web site, it is most def Paige doing Belle. I think her voice has aged to the point where it no longer sounds like Belle. Susan Egan is a much better Belle.

You're super-speedy and super-helpful- thanks! It's interesting, since Susan was Belle on Broadway...so obviously she sounds like Belle. I mean, it's not exactly like Paige's singing voice, I don't think, but it's darn close...but she's Belle, anyway, so obviously it sounds like Belle....if that makes any sense!

Haha, no problem! I am a huge fan of Character voices, and I have all these Word documents full of info that I keep, lol.

I understand what you mean, lol. Susan is Belle, just like Paige is Belle. I actually feel bad for the original voices as they get older. It must be hard seeing this character, that you helped create, get handed to someone else. Susan is a great replacement though, and she should be, especially with her Belle on Broadway experience, like you said.

At the first listen, I thought the same thing as you two. I thought that was Cassidy Ladden doing Cinderella's voice.
But then, I listened to Cassidy's songs and I got confused.

Whoever it is, I find this voice very familiar. (I can't say the same thing about Mulan's new song...)

How old is Susan and how old is Paige? Is their age that big of age gap for Susan to replace Paige's singing voice?

I always look out for your posts Disney Villain, they are a pleasure to read. I am the same huge fan of Disney Voices, just as you are, and I'm glad to see you still watch the forum. I've been lurking for almost a year now with not writing much ..... I sort of ended my time here with the Ariel's Beginning DVD release .... But will hopefully be back more

I do agree with you guys though; Susan is the natural replacement for Belle, if there is such a thing. This is going to sound odd, but to me, the most accessable and most used Disney media for me is Disney music, in all its forms. I listen to it on my music player all the time; not a day goes by when I wont listen to some form of Disney music. So if there is a Princess CD on my playlist, Susan will appear as often, if not more than Paige will. So to my mind, they have become one in the same. Yes, they are totally different sounding, but both embody the spirit of Belle to me. Others may feel differently, and I compleatly understand that. Susan is not part of Walt Disney's 'Beauty And The Beast', but she has become Belle for a whole new generation of children.

But, the day will come when my heroine will have to depart her role as Ariel ... and I have to be honest, I am dreading that day. So far, Jodi, and only Jodi, has voiced Ariel. We have not seen any sound a-likes, as Jodi frequently does Ariel in all her Media formats, from theme parks to CDs, to toys, to the website etc. So when the change does happen, it will be a shock. I know I make it sound so melodramatic, but Jodi has been part of my life for twenty years ... I can't imagine Ariel without her. The closest has been the Broadway show. At first, I loathed Sierra and how she had put her own 'Ariel-Stamp' on the character, but after a few listens, I grew to love the way she embodied Ariel. In a totally different way from Jodi, but again, the spirit of Ariel is there is both of them. Maybe a true understanding comes from playing the character, as well as voicing the film ? Could I see Sierra, when Jodi has retired, becoming Ariel's official voice .... ?

I think it is different with the older Princesess, as they HAVE to be revoiced in order for the characters to live on. I would rather have that then let them be mute. But again, Disney should hire actresses to permanently play each part, not randomly swap them around as they seem to be doing with 'Enchanted Tales'. The most badly defiled character, in my eyes, is Aurora. Her voice is not given the respect it deserves, after having the legend of MAry Costa voice her in the original.

I agree, whoever is singing for Cinderella def sounds familiar. I know I have heard the voice before.

I was doing some research, and a woman named Amy Powers wrote the songs for 'Disney Princess Enchanted Tales:Follow Your Dreams'. A Google search for her led me to her myspace page where she states that she wrote all the songs for Disney's Enchanted Tales series. I find it interesting that she said the word "series". This leads me to believe that Amy Powers wrote a bunch of new songs for the princesses for 'Enchanted Tales'. So I'm sure if Disney wanted to they could create many more new music videos using clips.

I wonder if all the animation and production was finished for the 'Enchanted Tales' series, when for some reason Disney decided to pull the plug. I mean we still don't know the 'KIngdom of Kindness' volume wasn't released first, especially after being advertised for years. I just find the whole thing a little odd.

Getting back to my point, Amy Powers also writes the songs for the Barbie Direct To Video films. Cassidy Ladden is usually always the singing voice for Barbie. I wonder if there's some sort of connection between Amy Powers and Cassidy Ladden in regards to 'Enchanted Tales'. Maybe Amy Powers will only let Ladden sing her songs. I don't know, lol. I just found the connection interesting.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with age. I think it's about who sounds better as Belle. Paige's voice is so old sounding, to the point where when she speaks as Belle today it sounds like Belle aged 50 years.

According to IMDB, Paige O' Hara is 53, and Susan Egan is 39.

I totally agree. Both Susan and Paige embody the spirit of Belle, as you said. I also find Disney music to be the most accessible Disney media for me. It was after the song "If You Can Dram' came out that I started becoming obsessed with Character voices.

I also agree with you about Ariel. It's going to be a sad day when Jodi has to retire. If you listen to some of her recent Ariel recordings, she does sound older, but she still possesses the same amount of youth and energy as she did when Ariel first debuted. I can't say the same about Paige as Belle. I truly do not like Sierra's version of Ariel, and I wouldn't be happy if she ended up being Jodi's replacement. Kerry Butler, who recorded the demos for the Broadway show as Ariel, is a good replacement. She sounds like Jodi, and I wouldn't mind her as a replacement. It's interesting, because out of all the princess voices Jodi Benson has held onto Ariel longer than anyone else.

Again, I agree. The older Princesses must be replaced in order for them to live on. I still don't understand why Disney keeps swapping the voices in all different media. All it does is confuse children. I was watching 'Enchanted Tales' with one of my little cousins (who' sin the age group for the DVD), and she asked why Aurora sounded so different. I told her it was an effect of the spell, and she still hadn't gotten her voice back. To little girls (and us, lol) these characters are real, and all this voice swapping is just confusing.

NO one is replacing Paige O'Hara from Belle, singing or speaking! Disney is just cheap sometimes and hires no body's to do certain work, like Enchanted Tales or Princess albums for singing only. Paige is still Belle 100%. I txted Paige's assistant and questioned this myself. This is her, The head of Disney character and Paige's reply.

According to the head of Disney character voices and Paige O'Hara, Paige O'Hara is the only speaking voice for Belle. There are a number of different voices used for the singing voices of all the princesses including that of Susan Egan. Paige is still the main singing voice for Belle on most projects. Paige sang Never Land on the Peter Pan DVD. It was written for her by Richard Sherman. Paige has also been in the Disney studio's working on upcoming projects a couple months ago. She has been in and out of the studio last year as well. Paige O'Hara is signed as an artist to Disney Fine Arts and debuted her series "Belle by Belle" at D23.

Talking about the princesses' original voices, I found two live perfomances from Jodi Benson and Paige O'Hara (July 2009)

- I think that they sound as good as they sounded in their original movies.

Jodi sounds so good there. Paige... gurl, I love her... but she isn't actually singing live there.

Technically true, although Adriana Caselotti was professionally singing as Disney's Snow White as late as 1983, when she re-recorded "I'm Wishing" for the grotto wishing-well. Kathryn Beaumont has also kept up her appearances as Alice and Wendy in various projects.

DisneyDuster, only time will tell if the originals, like many classic movies, will maintain their popularity. They certainly will within our lifetimes.

I've praised C-III quite a few times. Both old time Disney animators I know also felt it was unusually good. Still, it is not the original.

The originals have already been "touched" a few ways wrong, mostly wrt color timing. Some color choices were based on the cels, which were painted specifically for the old 3-strip Technicolor process rarely used today.
Ironically, C-III's colors are more true to the original than the mostly recently restored C-I !
Wrt voices, many interesting comments here. I'd agree that Aurora's latest voice is much different than Mary Costa's, while Jennifer Hale is very close to now retired Ilene Woods.
Wrt 3D conversion efforts, we'll have to wait and see how well BeautyAndBeast 3D fares.

Also, technology that allows "restoring" the music doesn't seem to help dialog. The same technology should be able to improve dialog, especially since many of the Disney actors recorded material on higher quality media than that used for the older films, so a good reference exists.
As I'm not an audio restoration expert, perhaps someone more qualified here can explain why com-pander or other audio technology available today can work for music, but not for voice.

Finally, Digital archiving is a major problem; none of the media formats have a life span beyond 15 - 30 years. Error correction can help preserve information, but eventually digital media deteriorates to the point where the correction fails and major flaws surface.
However, I assume Disney will spend whatever it takes to keep their classics pristine for years to come.

I was at the NFFC convention where this video was taken and I can assure you that Paige O'Hara was NOT lip syncing. I was close enough to hear her over without the mic and she really was singing.
