Here's a detailed report from:
http://esbinaca.wordpress.com/2010/05/1 ... z-barbosa/
Shee was at the ITFS in Stuttgart where Disney held a presentation about Tangled. In this first part of her report on that presentation she describes in great detail the 4 minute promo clip they played for the audience. Most of the dialogue was originally posted and I roughly translated the added commentary from german to english for you guys.
BEWARE OF SPOILERS!!!
[Storyboard-Scene Rapunzel and Flynn in a cellar-like room with curved ceilings, the doors bolted shut with planks]
Rapunzel: „Sooo… Flynn! Where are you from?“
Flynn: „Who-ho! Sorry Blondie, I don’t do Backstory!“
[Backgroundmusic - guitar riffs of KT Tunstalls "Suddenly I See" / directors Byron Howard and Nathan Greno on screen]
Howard: „One of the things John Lasseter says about making a great film is having memorable characters“
[CGI-scene - fully animated: Rapunzel walks down the stairs very lively and then slides down the banister - her long blonde hair sliding down behind her in an elegant and soft way]
Howard: „We have a beautiful heroine: Rapunzel.“
[CGI-scene - fully animated: Flynn carefully enters Rapunzel's tower through the window. The room is fully dark and the only light comes from a single beam of light through the window, the rest covered in darknes. Flynn sneaks around the room, takes a hairbrush in his hand. Inspects it and then sticks it into her bag with a grin on his face]
Howard: „A devastatingly handsome thief by the name of Flynn Rider.“
[CGI picture of Mother Gothel: Black permed curly hair, relaxing in a chair wearing a fully red dress, holding a handbrush in her hand]
Howard: „The Evil Villain: Mother Gothel.“
Howard: „And of Course: A Horse.“
[CGI-scene - Maximus standing next to Flynn, looking at eachother]
[Artworks and Rough Drawings of Rapunzel, sitting while looking sad as Mother Gothel combs her hair. Mother Gothel looks fully different here then in the finished CGI-model: In this artwork she is blonde]
Greno: „Rapunzel is a kidnapped princess who is being kept in the tower by an evil possessive old woman named Mother Gothel. The thing with Rapunzel is she’s not that typical damsel in distress. She’s a character, so full of life: She’s intelligent, she’s artistic, she’s fun. She has 70 feet of glowing magical hair.“
Howard: „A lot of hair.“
Greno: „A lot of hair.“
[Titlemusic from the musical "Hair" - during which a lot of artwork of Rapunzel is shown, focusing on her long, blonde hair. For example a drawing where she pirouettes but gets tangled up in her own hair so she tips over]
Greno: „She’s not that kind of girl that’s gonna wait around in the tower for someone to rescue her.“
Howard: „She needs to get out in the world and really live her life.“
Mandy Moore: „She yearns and definately has some sort of a sense that there is… there’s more than what meets the eye. There’s some of a greater purpose.“
[Rough Drawings of Pascal, Rapunzels Chameleon - He steps out of a flowerpot and for a while has the colors of the flowers on his body. Then a very cute CGI-picture is shown of him with big eyes]
Greno: “ Rapunzel has her own version of a little Jiminy Cricket. It’s this little chameleon named Pascal. He’s trying to get her out of this Tower. He’s really like – you know, like ‘punches his fist’“
[Storyboards: Rapunzel talking to Pascal]
Rapunzel: „Okay, this is it. I’ve waited my whole life for this day“
Mother Gothel: „Go outside!“ [She slams the window shut and pats Rapunzel on the head] „Oh, Rapunzel you’re so funny!“
[Artworks and Storyboards of Mother Gothel]
Howard: „Mother Gothel is the villain in our story“
Mother Gothel [very theatrical]: „Great! Now I’m the bad guy..“
Greno: „She’s a bit over the top. A bit passive-aggressive“
[Storyboards of Mother Gothel with very theatrical and over the top hand gestures and poses]
Mother Gothel to Rapunzel: „You are not leaving this tower. EVER!!… I’m just teasing, hahaha“
Greno: „While she says everything with a smile it’s okay. Disney creates these villians: They’re evil but they’re so much fun to watch“
Howard: „When a villian is kinda indivious as Mother Gothel, Rapunzel’s gonna needs some help from the outside.“
[CGI-Rough Animated Scene: Flynn leans on a tree, completely out of breath. On the tree there are two "Wanted"- posters. He's pictured on one of them. He see's himself and is shocked. An actionsequence with Flynn is shown/ The music is quite rock]
Howard: „Instead of this charming Prince coming to the rescue we have a charming thief: Flynn Rider“
Zachary Levi: „So Flynn – not a part of the fairytale – as far as I know the original fairytale, ehm, is a great character“
[CGI-Rough Scene with Flynn Rider, he looks charming and flirty]
Flynn: „Hey… how ya doin’?! My name is Flynn Rider…“
[Storyboardscene: Rapunzel uses her hair as a sort of lasso to tie Flynn to a chair and pin him down]
Greno: „He’s got the whole suave, smooth thing down. The thing with Flynn Rider is, he’s a guy you can tram over any lady and he’s now met his match in Rapunzel.“
Rapunzel: „I have made the decision to trust you“
Flynn: „That’s a really horrible decision, really, ask anyone.“
[Artworks of Flynn and Rapunzel as they try and get out of the tower]
Howard: „Rapunzel uses Flynn as her guide to lead her out in the outside world so she can discover her true destiny“
[CGI-Rough Scenes and Storyboards, action-packed horserace sequence with Maximus -again with rock-like but stylish music]
Greno: „The horse belongs to the Captain of the guards“
Guard Captain: „Not now, Maximus!“
[Storyboard and Rough Drawings: Maximus sees Flynn on a "Wanted"-poster. He growls at the poster and eats it in a blink of an eye]
Howard: „He’s chasing down Flynn. He’s a super cop“
Zachary Levi: „He’s a smart horse“
Howard: „And he’s gonna bring him the justice – no matter what“
[Artworks and Storyboards of Flynns fast and adventurous chase]
Flynn: „Coming throouuugh!“ [He swings from a rope and kicks the Guardcaptian]
Greno: „Awesome!“
[Storyboardmontage of some sequences of Maximus, Rapunzel and some guards]
Mother Gothel [standing in darkness with a candle in her hands]: „Oh please, there’s no need for that…“ [She blows out the candle]
[Further fast storyboard montages: Flynn holds Rapunzels hand, Flynn is surrounded, Rapunzel swings across a deep gorge using her hair as a rope, to the astonishment of Maximus and Flynn - the music is bombastic and pretty trailer-like]
Flynn: „You’ve got to be kidding me!“ [After a little pause Maximus hits him quickly but effectively in the stomach, making Flynn fall to the floor, with Maximus looking triumphant]
[The "Disney - Tangled"-Logo appears on screen]
[end of Featurette]
That's the end of the description so far. On the blog there are more reports but I'll need more time to translate those correctly. In those she goes into some more detail about the characters, their designs and her personal opinions on what was shown (which were VERY positive btw).
Apparently tomorrow we''ll be getting part two of the report about the actual presentation, this featurette was only the intro!
