Was the SW trailer restored ?

It looked pretty crappy on my hdtv.

Usually, they use the old restoration for much of these trailers.

Also, how can the sentences end up on the uk dvd, but not the us one? Did they use different mixers?

I don't know if it's true. It's just a rumour going round on European forums and I thought I should share it with you.

The missing words are on the UK European Blu-ray (which based on the languages was distributed in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands) but are missing from the DVD.

Note: neither the Blu-ray or the DVD has the mono soundtrack, so I can't check these. I was a little put out by this, until I discovered the Blu-ray has the Audio Commentary dubbed into the three non-English languages too (Meaning the disc has 8 soundtracks)

what is Disney going to do about it!? I want all the movie that's why i paid $26.99 for the blu ray not for parts of the movie! I want a exchange with the full movie!!!! ugh! how dare they put out and inferior and flawed product! and they expect us to eat it up!

I doubt they will do anything. Most people will not notice the difference. I just wonder why the 2 lines were omitted in the recent DVD/Blu-ray.

They created a new soundtrack from scratch, from all the separate instruments, lines, sounds, etc. Everything is changed, some things are just more noticeable (like the forgotten lines) than others......

So is it true that both of the lines are on the monorail track? If they are just set it to monorail *shrug

No, the missing lines are missing there too. Because the mono track isn't the original mono track. It's just the new tampered version in mono-disguise.

But why would they do too different audio restorations simultaneously for the same movie, let alone the same language track?

They didn't, actually. Most of the sound elements were struck in the 50s. Only the opening song survived. The rest is taken from the releases of the film.

So maybe, just maybe, the version of the movie we have here might be the original (and I mean original) version that came out in 1940?

Not quite. I'm not sure how the two bytes of dialogue were missed, but they are. And the only original recordings available for the restoration, as I said, were the film's opening of "When You Wish Upon A Star". These were, apparently, mislabeled before what was known as "the Great Purge" of hollywood sound elements.

Watched this last night with my son. We both enjoyed it and I thought the animation was absolutely breathtaking......but I found the film to be underwhelming. Coming off Snow White I could see why this didn't do as well. Snow White seemed to have one narrative while this movie had 3 stories merged into one.

After we finished watching my son said he didn't want to watch it again because Pinocchio got sick and he didn't want to see that so it did a good job showing how bad smoking and drinking was. For some reason he also thought Pinocchio was a boy and got turned into a puppet at the end .

Yeah the story was really poorly put together...the animation is amazing though Walt should have been a bit more hands on the storyboard as it just doesn't flow well

I just picked this up on Blu-Ray yesterday evening, and I'm pretty impressed with the presentation overall. I'd never have believed this film is so old, given the restoration job. I don't think I've seen this one since I was 7 or 8, so pretty much everything is new to me; which is always fun.

In reading the UD review, I was kind of surprised to see the notes on Blu-Ray in it. I don't really mind Disney pushing Blu-Ray at this point, really. Only those people who want it will bother, no matter what they do, so what's the harm?

I've been buying Blu-Ran exclusively now for about 5 or 6 months, and while I wouldn't have said prior to it that DVD needed that much improvement in the quality department... DVD really can't compare to a proper 1080p transfer when played on a good display. Particularly while watching on my computer, DVDs have always looked like crap... but now having a BD-ROM drive in my computer, they look incredible on my 1920x1200 monitor.

That's true, and something I feel Luke underestimated in his review. He did say that the animation is striking but claimed it didn't aspire to visual ambition like that seen in Fantasia or Bambi.

I disagree. All throughout the film you can see special shading on the characters (likely achieved using dry brush) like the yellow markings on Pinocchio's hat feather, or the pastel-like grey effects on Figaro's jet black fur.

That sort of stuff took time and money. The inkers and painters could have just filled in the characters with plain blocks of colour (which sadly they did on every feature following Bambi ... lack of funds, I guess. Even Sleeping Beauty, for all its lavishness, did not use those techniques, or maybe it was a stylistic choice ... dunno). Moreover, the climactic final sequence is a barrage of special effects, and must have been hell to animate and phoptograph. Oh, and let's not forget Oskar Fischinger's effects animation of the fairy's wand!

Pinocchio is aesthetically one of the best Disney has to offer!

That, and I think it's better than Snow White, overall.
