OMG! OMG! OMG!!!!! It was a wonderful dream come true! I LOVED Lily James as Cinderella, who I felt was the real star (and should have had her name before Cate Blanchett's in all the credits). And I almost cried at her transformation. I will talk more about my thoughts and review it later, and hopefully after I've seen it a second time. But I just had to say this for now!

I'm going today to see it. I watched the animated classic last night, because I haven't seen it in such a long time, and I want to have it as a source of comparison. I can honestly say I have never been this excited to see a movie. Not even Maleficent.

The critical success certainly justifies it. Have fun!

Just got back from seeing it: it was cute (sometimes even saccharine cute) and touching, but the story lacked certain edge and the entire movie was sterile in its gaudiness -- I don't know whether to compliment the production design department or slam whomever hired them. Cate Blanchett was the only truly spectacular thing about it but I felt she could have done more; alas, she was held back by the script. Still, I'd recommend people to see it -- it's miles above Maleficent but it doesn't hold a candle to neither the original DAC nor Ever After, which for me is still the definitive live-action version of the tale.

Friday Report: 'Cinderella' Opens to $23 Million

Cinderella ruled the box office on Friday, while Liam Neeson's latest disappointed.

Cinderella opened to an estimated $23 million on Friday, which is roughly on par with Oz The Great and Powerful ($24.1 million) and Maleficent ($24.3 million). If Cinderella follows Oz's pace—a likely outcome, given the similarities in genre and time of year—it would end the weekend with at least $75 million.

Yes. I really like The Slipper and the Rose but it has that political subplot/social commentary in the second part that's kind of at odds with the rest of the film and slows it down. But otherwise, the story, performances and sets are wonderful; it's just that it tries too hard at times. It was my favorite Cinderella movie (next only to the 1950 film) up until I saw Ever After so I find it better than the 2015 version by default.

I just got back from seeing it. It was so beautiful, and in some moments, I really thought I was going to cry Patrick Doyle's score was marvelous, but also emotional and melancholic. Those who said that Lily James was not pretty enough to be Cinderella were either blind or complete morons. from the moment she first came on screen, I loved her. Not only was she beautiful, but she also portrayed the character in a new and fresh way, but also retained the charm and grace of the animated heroine. Cate Blanchett was a stunning Lady Tremaine, and I loved the scene where she is first introduced, how she smiled in that sarcastic and cruel way, she was perfect.

I know for sure I'll be going a second time.

I finally got a chance to look through A Wish Your Heart Makes: From the Grimm Brothers' Aschenputtel to Disney's Cinderella and in the section about the live action film, they bring up an aspect of the prince's character (and the Prince/Ella dynamic) that must have chopped sometime after the book was written but too late for them to change it, since the book reads as if it's part of the film.

"In this version, we learn that [the prince has] been at war for five years. … We give our prince the sense of a man who has been in the wars, who knows in a very personal and meaningful way the cost of war. He’s less shinily innocent than princes have been in the past. … He’s surrounded by people who suggest that countries are ruled effectively by having wars, claiming other countries, and uniting kingdoms. He finds in Cinderella a kindred spirit who believes that the important thing is not to go at war with your fellow man, but to have courage, to be kind and generous, and where possible, to turn the other cheek: to see that as strength, not weakness."

It seems like they replaced people around him wanting wars/invasions for the sake of the kingdom with the people around him wanting to marry a princess for the sake of the kingdom. And instead of Ella being a kindred spirit, she ntroduces new ideas to the prince (just because it's what's done doesn't mean it's what's right, have courage be kind, etc).

Just saw it again and it was truly a beautiful and magical film. The waltz between Ella and Prince Kit was, perhaps, the most beautiful and romantic think I have ever beheld. I think the first time I saw it at the press screening, I was too focused on what was cut from the screenplay. As a standalone film, it is just lovely!

There was even a nobleman at Lady Tremaine's party that made a sexist remark against Ella when she speaks up about her feelings about war. This was partly why Ella told Jacqueline the mouse something like "We girls must stick together." It was sort of a reference to the gentleman's sexist remark. Unfortunately, it seems a lot got cut, but I think what they have now is paced rather nicely.

These are some of the scenes/dialogue that was cut from the film. There's more footage that was cut, but I will need to wait until March 26 to point them out.

-Little Ella running through the meadow.

-Ella and her mother saving the bird.

-The line "Where there is kindness, there is goodness, and where there is goodness, there is magic." was cut.

-The line "...so I'll know as faraway as I may be, that you will be safe." was cut.

-The dialogue between the guests at Lady Tremaine's party - one of them making a sexist remark - was cut.

-The servants reacting to the Lady Tremaines' demands.

-The servants being dismissed was there, but the dialogue was removed.

-The brief conversation between Lady Tremaine and Ella: "What on earth have you been doing?" she asks her stepdaughter rather cruelly. Ella's soft-spoke response: "Dreaming." It's after this sweet quiet moment when Lady Tremaine grows louder with her response: "Then wake up!"

-Some of the dialogue in the fencing scene was cut.

-The dialogue during the Royal Ball announcement was shortened.

-The dialogue explaining that the glass slippers would be a memento was cut.

-The Grand Duke and Royal Guard questioning Ella after the spell was broken.

-The Grand Duke sitting behind his desk and the prince talking to him about finding the missing girl. The prince says something like "Somebody like that doesn't just vanish."

-There is a scene with Kit putting on his disguise and also telling the Captain why this girl has captivated him so much so that he is willing to forego dealing with diplomatic matters in order to find this missing girl.

-There is a scene after the wedding, but the movie ended with the wedding.

I just love the costumes and sets of Slipper; I can't get over how lush it all is. And all real over CGI; such a wonderment over modern films.
