nomad2010, she certainly looks nothing like a Shrek character to me. She's not stiff and over realistic. She looks like a Disney character rendered in CGI, and she's lovely!

I love that she's barefoot. It brings an elegance of nature that Aurora and Giselle had. It's great!

I don't like her character design based on this new image but I'll wait for a better version of the picture to pass judgment.

I think she looks charming!

This is Rapunzel as seen in the Shrek movie. Disney's Rapunzel has absolutely nothing in common with her. I find Disney's design charming and as appealing as any of their handdrawn princesses.

I was asking because "Colorsofthewind" was referring to a picture of Rapunzel where she actually looks like she does in this clip.

I know this is an old test clip, but I was wondering if there were any similarities.

Because I think this clip (although it needs lots of improvement) is a good direction to go in.

The picture on that blue board with Mandy Moore and Rapunzel doesn't look half as good, as Rapunzel looks like a generic cgi human character on that.

Hmm, maybe it's just me, but from what I remember, the animation we were shown looked quite close to what was in that clip, which is what I would describe as painterly :/

Then again, maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps my perception was altered by what I wanted to see, which was animation like that

Now I obviously didn't have a whole lot to work with, but I managed to turn this . . .

Judging from the new pic, it looks like they have moved a bit away from the design seen in the early test clip, and a bit closer the Penny design from Bolt.
Maybe the fact that one of the directors from Bolt is involved in Rapunzel as well, has something to do with it.

And I do NOT like it.

This is a really generic cgi look. Actually, the clip from 5 years ago looks 10 times better.

i wasn't saying she looked like the Rapunzel from Shrek. javascript:emoticon(':lol:') i would definitely be getting my eyes checked if that were the case.. but I was saying she looks like she should be in Shrek. It's generic, boring character design, no details (like that gorgeous artwork of her in D23 or even the disneyanimation.com site..), not painterly and very unoriginal...

I'm waiting to see the character in action before I cast judgment...I really want to trust that Glen Keane and the Disney artists will create a nice balance between CGI and traditional 2D with this character.

When I first saw her, her face reminds me a bit like Jesse from Toy Story 2. both have wide-eyed and spunk. The tone of her skin also reminds me of it. So I can't really say she generic or that she look like something out of Shrek.

She seems like a tomboy in personality just like Jesse is as well.

Funny, I was gonna say that Rapunzel's animation design- her face, that is- here reminded me of that of Ariel's.

hm... i liked the original unbraided design too, but this isn't too far from that.

Yah, I can see some Jessie in her face...

She reminds me of Ariel to be honest. Both have a spirited feel to them combined with the HUGE eyes and youthful smiles.

Everyone should remember that this is likely a pre-rendered image to be used on promotional material. Remember how we thought the first character images for Princess and the Frog looked generic and bland? Yet the actual film footage and artwork paint them in a much better light.

Like its also been said the lighting and blurry images don't help at all.

Ariel? No way.

She looks more like Vanessa. In generic 3d form then.

It's funny, because she reminded me most of Eilonwy. Similar face and hair, and the clothes have the same kind of style and colors. Except for really chubby cheeks.

And, no, I'm not feeling the design at the moment.

Yes, Penny was the first thought I had when I saw the picture. I mean, I don't think Rapunzel is ugly or anything, but the fact that one character looks so much (I mean, they look different, but similar, you know?) like another bothers me a bit. Her earlier design was unlike other characters. I haven't done a John Lasseter conspiracy thought in a while, but what if John is the one who didn't want Rapunzel to be too pretty or something (I loved her earlier design), because he wants Pixar to be #1...?

Maybe I should read the end of someone's post before making a John Lasseter conspiracy theory. I mean, do you think that the directors told the animators, hey, you need to make Rapunzel look more like Penny, because that's the way we like our CGI characters to looK?!?

From that clip, I don't see a comparison at all. Then again, It seems to me that nothing from that could come from this movie would ever impress you or make you think otherwise.... unless they decided tomorrow to make it hand-drawn. Do you like any CGI? I'm just curious.

I think that her character design looks very good considering we can't really see any detail. I will say that from this picture she does definitely look CGI, but I can't imagine what else she would look like in CGI. True, the point of this film is to look more painterly but in order to judge that we need to see a clearer picture of her. This is going to be a CG film, so it will still look that way but it's supposed to feel more hand drawn. For me, that can only be judged while actually watching a clip and not a random picture of a character.

I'm really looking forward to seeing clips from this film! I hope what Disney showed during the convention will be online soon!!!

Also, it seems that this princess's dress color might focus on purple... we'll have to wait and see.
