I was there today doing some early Christmas shopping, and get this: they showed RESTORED footage from the film! First they showed the DVD trailer. I wasn't paying too much attention to the screen, but then I noticed the announcer was talking about the bonus material and the new restoration. My ears perked up since the DVD trailer we're all familiar with didn't mention it. As I looked on the screen, I saw the exact same shots that are on the regular DVD trailer...but they were smoother, brighter, with more pastel-looking colors than the bold ones we're accustomed to. My jaw hung open. Not only was Disney actually using restored footage on one of their DVD trailers for once, but they edited it so that it was almost exactly like the trailer that's been out for a year, only with about 20 seconds more footage regarding the restoration and supplements. It doesn't end there, though. They repeated the trailer again about 10 minutes later, and this time I was able to watch the whole thing and see that they did, indeed, use restored footage for this. Right when it ended, do you want to know what they showed? The ENTIRE "Under the Sea" sequence...restored, as well! I stood there paralyzed with my mouth open looking up at the monitor. My mom thought I was having a stroke or something. It really looked amazing. It's a huge difference over the current transfer. I'd say it's akin to how Beauty and the Beast looked when restored, only Little Mermaid was easier to get used to (Beauty's transfer really changed the original color palette; Mermaid's isn't as dramatic, but has similar pastel schemes). The biggest thing that stood out to me was how Ariel's hair was a softer and less harsh shade of red in the clips. So keep an eye out next time you're at The Disney Store. It's totally worth checking out.
I wish I could see it. Too bad we don't have any Disney Store in the country.

I love how each time you check out this thread, there's something new and exciting to comment on. Hurrah for there being so many TLM fans
Disneykid, you're one lucky person. I really wish it was me who had had that jaw-dropping experience. Unfortunately we neither have a disneystore anywhere near here, nor anybody who would care enough to actually air something like that. Still, I'm glad you posted - so good to hear that the restoration's noticable. And of course, looks good! Simply can't wait to see it myself.
The french covers look lovely; both of them. As said before, I'm almost beginning to like the single-disc cover more? Most scary

I'm still hanging onto the last little bit of hope that Denmark will get a 2disc edition as well.

Or for people who want the movie at the cheapest price contra people who are willing to pay for extras.

Not in the Netherlands.
Snow White: 1-disc
Beauty and the Beast: 1-disc and 2-disc
The Lion King: 2-disc
Aladdin: 2-disc
Bambi: 2-disc
Cinderella: 1-disc and 2-disc
Lady and the Tramp: 1-disc and 2-disc
The Little Mermaid: 1-disc and 2-disc
I would like to see just a 2-disc release, because a single disc release is just as expesive as a 2-disc release when there wasn't a 1-disc release too. I bought Aladdin for €19,99 and Lady and the Tramp for €24,99. Cinderella 2-disc was €19,99, but that was a mistake from the shop, because the 1-disc was €19,99 too.

Snow White only had 1 disc? Wow, now I'm lucky to be an American, because I have a 2-disc set. Then again, there are probably some 2-disc sets over there, that we American's don't have.

We MAY get luck with the older Little Mermaid music videos to be added to the Platinum Edition release. Aladdin never said anothing about the original Whole New World musisc video, just the rendition and we got the original one on the DVD. Same thing with Beauty and the Beast. I remember they always advertised Jump5's version all the time. So HOPEFULLY they will do that with The Little Mermaid and give is Jodi Benson music video and Peter Andre's version of Kiss the Girl.

Oh my lord, yes! Recently while my family and I were on vacation at WDW, my Mom and I went browsing through the World of Disney store, and suddenly "Under the Sea" came on the gigantic screen. I simply stood there, my face up and smiling. Absolutely gorgeous.

I do hope so because I haven't seen Jodi's. Let's get our fingers crossed for that.

Other than that ridiculously over-exaggerated, Before/After screencap of Flounder, has anyone been able to find pictures of the Digital restoration?
There has been controversy in the past over the restoration of Platinum Editions, e.g, Cinderella, Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King.
I just don't want The Little Mermaid to be slammed by critics for their restoring of this timeless classic, hopefully Ariel's hair won't be too pastel, I hope the colours are still vibrantly bright and realistically dark in all the right places.

Oh, that would be more than awesome. A musicvideo of that kind would most certainly be appreciated!
I'm also really hoping that some before/after pictures will begin showing up on the net soon. Especially after the whole discussion with Cinderella possibly having been more "redrawn" than restored. I just can't help but fear that they will go overboards with the digital restoration and, for example, change Ariel's haircolor dramatically. Red is
in, animators!

Surprise, surprise, my dad said I couldn't get this movie - even though I said I'd pay for it with my own money.

Disney would change Ariel's hair. It's her trade-mark.
