I never had interest in these tbh, the last film I was excited about was Frozen II I think. However, I understand what you mean, I'll be fine if films are never released anymore.

While there are films I'm certainly looking forward to, any delay that's announced now, I just shrug my shoulders. As opposed to the beginning of the pandemic, where I was greatly disappointed even when I understood why.
I think Sony made the right decision by delaying many of their releases until next year right off the bat rather than playing this game of "will it or won't it?" that WB has played with Tenet and Disney with Mulan.
At this point, I'm only really paying attention to what's coming to Disney+, Netflix and VOD rather than anything with a theatrical release.

Personally, I have never been too excited for
Mulan or
Tenet, so my anticipation for these films hasn't changed much, but I've been wondering too if these delays would have that effect on people. It'll be interesting to see how they perform when they are finally able to open in theaters.

Hmm I think this could mean it's coming to Disney+ ... maybe November time ?
I'm not overly bothered either way, I wasn't that excited for it. Sorry for those that were though.
Why didn't they just straight up delay it until next year like The Jungle Cruise ? Or could they not as it was too close ?

Obviously the biggest reason it was delayed is Covid, but surely all of the US-China drama going on is playing a part in their decision? There was an article above mentioning that obviously the movie doing well in China is important to Disney...

Sorry blackcauldron85, I know Covid has delayed everything ( didn't make my point clear, sorry ), but why did Jungle Cruise straight away get pushed to next year, no questions asked, whereas Mulan was bumped, delayed, then taken off the schedule ?

“Shifting ‘Tenet,’ a $200 million-plus budget film from Warner Bros., directed by Christopher Nolan directly to HBO Max could be just the power move WarnerMedia needs right now. If WarnerMedia has the guts and financial wherewithal to pivot ‘Tenet’ to HBO Max, we will quickly learn who is ‘king,’ content or distribution. Movie theaters have essentially prevented movie studios from evolving their business model over the past decade, even as consumer behavior has dramatically shifted. Studios have been stuck with the legacy sequential release pattern of movies with 75 days between theatrical and digital sale and six-to-eight months between theatrical and release into pay one. The COVID-19 pandemic has enabled studios to begin experimenting. Studios have only two ‘good’ choices for large budget films: Either delay films into 2021 in hopes of a vaccine or shift to (subscription video on demand).”

Oh, I know you know Covid is the main reason!! I meant that I wonder if US-China relations is playing a large role in Mulan's delay. Whereas Jungle Cruise doesn't have that controversy attached to it.
I feel really bad for people working at movie theaters and their companies. Even if Covid gets under control with vaccines, etc, people have financially been hit, so $20-$25 to buy the DVD/Blu or digital, or less to wait for streaming, may be the norm for people in the future. And then, like the quote farerb posted, studios can bypass the theaters totally.

Personally, I’m so excited for movie theaters to reopen with major new releases because it will be a sign that things are returning to some normalcy. Maybe. But tbh I had relatively little interest in Mulan before— now, I’m envisioning it as my celebratory “this hell year is finally over” movie. So yeah.

^ That's a good point. When it finally comes to theaters- if it's still the/one of the first films back, I wonder if more people will go see it to celebrate the start of normalcy!!?

Jungle Cruise only released a few trailers and probably still has some special effects to complete. It's also possible they hadn't started recording the score (that's normally the last addition to a movie before it's complete). Meanwhile, Mulan was already in the can, many million of dollars had already been spent on tv spots, billboards and other advertising and it even premiered shortly before movie theatres were forced to shut down all over the world.
You know, I couldn't help but think recently that "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" sure got a lucky break. It was originally going to open this May, but then Disney decided to move it back to October, taking the spot initially reserved for "Jungle Cruise." "Artemis Fowl" was also moved from August 2019 to Maleficent's original spot.

It surely
does hurt the promotion of a movie when it is repeatly rescheduled... Since they started rethinking the planification for their movies in March/April, I've always wondered why they didn't directedly announced
Mulan for May 2021 (taking then the place of another less anticipated live-action remake:
Cruella).
Mulan would have been perfect for May, and it would always have been possible to go back on their decision if things were getting better this summer.. Oh well, their move..

BREAKING: Disney’s Live-Action “Mulan” to be Released on Disney+ for $29.99
https://wdwnt.com/2020/08/breaking-disn ... for-29-99/
Seeing a lot of people/sites reporting this, but can’t find the original source. I think it must be from the earnings call.

It just goes to show the sad state of the situation. It really makes me feel like nothing will be normal again. Also this could be another step towards entering a new era of movie theaters being of smaller significance. All this money and none of it is spent on distribution or shared with movie theaters. Disney doesn't really care about the "cinematic experience" if they can keep their control on their content. It's also fit with the rumor that they will no longer produce 4K home releases of catalog live action films from Walt Disney Pictures or Touchstone or Fox.

I know. It’s just... a very sad thing to see happen. It’s another sign of how much things have changed. And how there may never be any way to turn back.
I say Soul is next for this treatment.

Probably it is, though I think they might decide after they see how Mulan does. But I think it will succeed because they have ~60 million subscribers so 60,000,000*30 = 1,800,000,000$.
Now obviously not everyone will be interested, but they only need something like 25 million subscribers to make it a success I guess. And let's not forget about new subscribers that will also pay for their subscription, even for only a month that's another 7$ per new subscriber. And I repeat that non of this money goes to distribution or movie theaters.
Edit: it's also a rental, so people will have to pay again if they want to watch it after the time is up.

It would be one thing for Disney to release Mulan on PVOD first and after a while put it on Disney+ but having a PVOD section on the service is ridiculous and confusing. Isn't the point of paying for an SVOD service like Netflix or HBO Max that you don't have to pay for titles separately like VOD? So someone who wants to watch Mulan will have to first pay for a Disney+ subscription which costs $7 since they no longer offer a free trial and then pay another $30 to rent the particular title. I think this is unprecedented. I hope this experiment blows up in their faces because it's incredibly greedy and anti-consumer.
