With WB’s Tenet moving to July 31st, Mulan is set to be the first major studio film to hit theaters on July 24th. Do you think Disney is happy about this arrangement and do you think Disney will keep the July 24th date or further push back the movie?

Haha you remember when the only prediction people had for 2020 is that McDonalds would bring back Szechuan sauce to coincide with the Mulan remake??? Good times...

Disney Weighs Postponing July 24 Release of ‘Mulan’ as Theaters Struggle to Reopen

The article is behind a paywall.

Edit: The Hollywood Reporter has the story, too: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat- ... dy-1287110

I think they’ll keep pushing it back. I can’t imagine it debuting on Disney+, can you? Or maybe they will try out the Trolls World Tour model?

I think eventually everything will be moved to 2021. I don't think Mulan will be sacrificed to Disney Plus, we can already see that they did that with other "lesser" films. Mulan is an event film so if it eventually goes to Disney Plus, then any film can go to Disney Plus. Moreover if it manages to be successful, then there's no reason for Disney to have theatrical releases anymore and then we can all say goodbye to movie theaters.

Does this kind of thing even matter anymore? When Mulan opens in theaters, it’s going to be a test of Americans’ priorities during the pandemic, not their feelings about foreign actors’ politics.

Does it matter? Probably not. As you said, the film has to overcome bigger issues than that. On a related note, is it me, or is this movie kinda cursed? First, there was backlash regarding a spec script that got leaked that had a white man as Mulan's love interest, then the backlash for changing Li Shang and "straightwashing" him based on a casting notice, then there was the controversy about the lack of Mushu and songs, then Liu Yifei's Hong Kong comments, and of course the pandemic and the delays.

It does seem to have been in controversy after controversy. I don't really remember that happening with the other re-makes? I think there was small bit of controversy about Naomi Scott being cast in Aladdin, but it didn't really stick. I don't know.

It also deserves it more than the other re-makes though, imo, so I’m not complaining. I wonder what the general public will be saying about this film once it's released and they realize it’s still nothing like the original legend? I can just imagine it now--endless sermons about Disney's "racist" re-appropriation of Chinese legend for their own greed and they don't even have the excuse of not knowing better like they did in the '90s with Pocahontas.  Never mind the fact that Disney bastardizes all stories they touch, that's sort of their thing. Time to #CancelDisney.

I was reading some old Fanpop posts and apparently Jennifer Lawrence was under consideration by Disney to play Mulan at one point. A lot of people were praising her casting say she was believable as an action heroine considering she played Katniss and Mystique and also a big box office draw.

No way Disney would cast a white woman to play Mulan- those posters surely were trolling?!

That's what I assumed at first but I do remember there was a lot of fear that Disney would cast a white woman as Mulan and one supposed draft of the film had the love interest for Mulan as white. Also there have been other major studios that suggested white actresses for non-white leads in some major films.

The most infamous example is when Julia Roberts was the pick to play Harriet Tubman. Now that was back in the 90s but we've had several films in the 2010s which also featured non-white roles played by white actors so it's not atypical even today.

There was also a bit of controversy about some white extras whose skin had been darkened, and the backlash to Genie's CGI.

I trust the Vision of Niki Caro altough i din’t really care for North Country She is still a talanted filmaker and She is At least more of a visionary with singular vision than say Rupert Sanders

I think She was an inspired choice and i feel the same way with Craig Gillespie :D

At least They din’t pick a bland Director.

It will most likely be postponed, Disney won't take chances.

Is anyone else experiencing fatigue with the delayed films? I'm kinda over Mulan, Tenet et al. Any kind of interest I may have had has died down. I think the constant rescheduling contributed to that.
