Ahhh... I've been waiting for a topic like this... *cracks knuckles*

I haven't had the money to buy a whole lot recently, but I have about 400 anime DVDs, ~150 anime laserdiscs, and ~300 mangas... I have been an anime fan since 1990, although I was watching Speed Racer, Star Blazers, etc., on TV in the 70s, as a wee lad...

A couple of the discs listed below may not fit quite right where they are listed... Basically, I am calling a single-disc OVAs (2-3 episodes) movies, and multi-disc OVAs (4-5+ episodes) TV Series...

**********
CAUTION: Some of these may not be suited for all ages, so check the ratings/get parental permission if you think you might have a problem...
**********

Here are some of my favorites:
Movies/Short OVAs:
All Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli titles
Armitage III (4 OVAs made into 1 movie, plus another movie)
The Castle of Cagliostro - Lupin IIIrd, from Miyazaki
Cowboy Bebop Movie
Dragon Half - super funny, for older teens
Final Fantasy: Spirits Within
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Spirit of Wonder: Miss China's Ring - probably hard to find. :(
Tokyo Godfathers - PG13

TV Series (or long OVAs):
.hack//
Ah My Goddess - also Adventures of Mini-Goddess
Angelic Layer - from Clamp - all ages (some violence,) and would appeal to boys & girls
Azumanga Daioh - Super Funny
Chance Pop Session - about a girl studying music
Chobits - from Clamp - Mature rating, I think
Comic Party - about a manga artist, funny
Cowboy Bebop - one of the best out there...
Cromartie High School - funny, weird, probably older audiences.
El-Hazard
Escaflowne
Excel Saga - Funny, Weird, Funny, Crazy - older teens
Full Metal Panic! - Funny
Full Metal Alchemist
The Fuccons - weird Japanese mannequin show, some rude humor.
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka - funny, older teens
Haibane Renmei
Inu Yasha
Iria: Zieram the Animation - There are some cool live-action movies on this.
Kiddy Grade - Older Teens
King of Bandit Jing
Kino's Journey
Legend of Black Heaven - Older Teens
Love Hina - Older teens
Lupin IIIrd
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - funny, probably older teens
Maison Ikkoku - probably not a lot of action
Outlaw Star
Photon - Funny, Older teens
Rune Soldier - Older Teens
Samurai Deeper Kyo
Sherlock Hound - Miyazaki (think The Great Mouse Detective...)
Tenchi Muyo - also Tenchi Muyo GXP, several other series and movies.
Trigun - Older Teens

Manga and novels:

A.I. Love You
Angelic Layer
Azumanga Daioh
BECK
Bleach

DeathNote
Dr. Slump - from the Dragon Ball creator

I do have a limited taste in anime, so I'll narrow it down to one of my favorite animes of all time, including films in no particular order.

TV Series:

- Lupin III (the second series)
- Cased Closed (In japan, its called "Detective Conan")
- Azumanga Daioh (definately one of the funniest animes around!)
- Crayon Shin-Chan
- Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z (up to the freeza saga)
- Sailor Moon (up to sailor stars)
- Galaxy Express 999 (80's anime)

Films:

- All of Studio Ghibli films

Movies

Howl's Moving Castle

I don't read very many manga, so I'm going more on the shows than anything:

Sorceror Stabber Orphen
Wolf's Rain
Tenchi Muyo/Universe
Samurai 7
Digimon
(only the first season)
FAKE (never seen the show for this one)

I enjoy Full Metal Alchemist, Inuyasha, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball (Z), but there are so many episodes (with so little happening in each) that I get bored most of the time.

The Ghibli films are good, too (though I haven't seen all of them). The older ones (Nausicaa, Porco Rosso and Castle in the Sky) tend to keep me uninterested. But I've seen Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away so many times, I'm thinking about adding them to my 'favorite movies of all time' list.

I used to like anime shows like Pokemon and Digimon, but now I am sick to death of anime. Look what it has done to Toon Disney! I think most anime shows today are just an excuse to market toys.

the cheesy ones are out to market toys. i dont think many people buy inu yasha action figures  i would buy an inu yasha back pack or plushy, but i dont think people really buy the toys.

also, the anime movies dont sell toys. i have never seen a chihiro toy anywhere..... or a yubaba one, for that matter.

You mustn't overgeneralize situations. Don't judge from a few cases and state that all anime are created just for the toy market. Especially if you don't have an thorough experience with that media. Personally i never liked Pokemon or Digimon.Nowadays, everything can be exploited for financial reasons from disney products to quality live-action movies. If for example the lame merchandise of Disney Princesses make me sick or infuriate me that doesn't mean that the disney films that inspired that products are not worth-while, right?

true. very, very true. i hate to say this, but disney will do whatever they can to make money. they treat their PE dvds HORRIBLY, and they target it toward a younger audience, leaving us older disney lovers to cling to memories

i used to LOVE pokemon. in fact, i still have the card of my favorite one!

Sailor Moon was one of my favorite TV shows for years when it broadcast on Fox Kids. Of course, die-hard fans of the show say the only version worth a damn is the original Asian version, but I like the American / English-speaking voices too much to go back. It would be nice to see the English-speaking episodes get a DVD release one day, but I have all the original Fox-run episodes recorded on VHS (unfortunately though, I had to record 1 of the episodes, "Wedding Day Blues," off of USA during their run of the show and they cut A LOT of stuff out of the episodes).

And one of my favorite movies as a kid was The Fantastic Adventures of Unico. I have that movie on a VERY badly worn and worn out VHS that also contains the "Too Smart for Strangers" special done with the live action, people in costumes, Welcome to Pooh Corner characters, a recorded off of the original VHS copy of Disney's TV movie Justin Morgan Had a Horse, and the Unico sequel, but only the first 20-something or 30-something minutes of it, The Island of something.
