It's definitely theatrical. Dwayne Johnson wouldn't have agreed to a streaming movie.

Most likely, it will be delayed. They haven't even cast anyone yet, right? Except for Johnson as Maui.

I used to think the same for tom hanks, but here we are. The landscape has changed quickly.

A lot of times casting isn't announced for a while, sometimes even after filming.

The live-action remake is getting delayed.
What happens to the live-action version of Moana, which Johnson is not only starring in but also producing under his Seven Bucks label? Does it stick to its June 27, 2025 theatrical release? No, it won’t, but Disney needs to back-fill that date with another theatrical release. Even more than that, the studio isn’t even in production on the live-action version.

The live-action Moana, announced a year ago by Iger and Johnson, is slated to hit theaters in June 27, 2025. Now, it is almost certain to depart that date to give both films space, according to insiders.

Johnson’s getting $20 million plus bonuses for the live-action Moana, which will now be bumped from its summer 2025 release date.

In the casting call for Gramma Tala actors auditioning for the role need to be "strong singers". Given her character had very little singing in the original and arguably not the kind that requires a lot of skill, do you think this means remake she will get a new song in the remake?

Sort of makes sense that any new songs they might come up with could involve her. Maybe a duet between her and Moana at the start of the film (or a solo)?

I find it surprising that they will release the live action so close to Moana 2. I guess we will see if it plays in its favor or not.

Musker & Clements aren't involved with the live-action remake. Not really surprising, but I thought they would at least have them consult on the film like they did with Aladdin.
Now it’s Moana’s turn to get the live-action treatment. “I hope that they do it well, but we have nothing to do with it,” [John Musker] says.

We have our Moana.

Up-and-coming Australian-Samoan actress Catherine Laga'aia will play Moana in the live-action Moana film.

This will be Laga'aia's biggest credit to date; according to her page on IMDB, her only other credit was three episodes of the Prime Video series "The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart."

And here's the kicker: Frankie Adams, the actress cast as Moana's mother, played the older version of Laga'aia's character on "The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart."

Well, there was always a chance this thing would fall apart before now, but by this point it looks like the engine is running. Oh, well.

However it pans out, I genuinely hope this girl has a fantastic time with this movie.

I only hope that she doesn't receive much hate from the audience.
I still think that this movie is absurd. There's no need to make a remake from a movie that is not old and that is going to have a sequel this year. Disney should spend their money in other projects because people are getting tired about live action remakes.

Apparently, they'll make some changes to the character of Moana to reflect the new actress' Samoan heritage. I wonder if it's just the costumes, for example, or something more important story-wise.
Cravalho is supportive, too, of the other incoming incarnation of Moana. As well as the animated sequel, work is underway on a live-action version – and while Dwayne Johnson will reprise the role of Maui, it’ll be down to Catherine Laga’aia to take on Moana’s mission. While Cravalho is Hawaiian, Laga’aia has Samoan heritage – and it sounds like the next evolution of Moana will take that into account. “The stories aren’t exactly the same,” teases Cravalho. “[Laga’aia]’s got her own history and I think that’s going to come across on screen.” That’s the true heart of Moana – always evolving, and always pushing for the next horizon.

I wonder if they’ll cast Auli’i Cravalho as Tafiti to involve her without overshadowing the new live-action Moana.

I don't get why there was backlash with Auli'i not being Moana, she did the right and obvious choice, she herself has always admitted she's less than 25% polynesian with mostly her being Portuguese (literally her last name)
