I feel like Pixar hasn’t really known what to do with Buzz since the original film. All the sequels are really just about Woody.

Bo Peep will probably be left behind, so Woody can go and help his friends snap Bonnie out of her screen addiction. Hopefully, she will still make an appearance at the start and/or end of the film.
Can't say I'm loving them re-purposing an element from the Circle 7 version into a canon sequel.

I don’t know. I feel it could be a great way to maybe acknowledge the failure of Lightyear if one of these defective Buzzes sounds like Chris Evans.

Real quick, I was able to attempt to get a bit of new information out, during D23, about #ToyStory5.
I had gotten to ask the film’s crew, lead director and writer Andrew Stanton, the film’s 2nd director McKenna Harris, and its producer Jessica Chol, 2 very important questions about the film.
First, I asked them if the idea of the toys going up against 50 rogue and defective Buzz Lightyears would be a meta way to admit & acknowledge the critical, box office failure of #Lightyear if one of them shows its defective by sounding like Chris Evans, which would lead the toys to call out how that doesn’t sound like Buzz Lightyear at all.
And since #ToyStory5 will be the film to mark Pixar’s 40th Anniversary, I asked them if there will be a variant of the Pixar logo where it fades to black but says “Celebrating 40 Years” with the “0” being Luxo’s lamp bulb before it flickers off, like what we saw with the Pixar logo before Cars in 2006 when it said “Celebrating 20 Years” before Luxo’s lamp bulb switched off, which is similar to the idea I brought up to the crew of #Hoppers with the idea of the variant of the Pixar logo before it being a “Celebrating 30 Films” logo.
Stanton couldn’t tell me much regarding my 1st question as it’s a spoiler for the movie, but he said he will definitely relay the idea of the “Celebrating 40 Years” variant of the Pixar logo to Pete Doctor when they head back to Pixar Animation Studios after D23. With that I thanked them for the info and told them to “look out for the big green ogre who has his 5th movie out in theaters, 2 weeks after this one comes out [Shrek 5].”

BUZZ LIGHTYEARS! — The toys are back in Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 5," and in the case of Buzz Lightyear, "back" is an understatement. Fifty commemorative Buzz Lightyear action figures, stuck in toy mode, are searching for Star Command and they just might make considerable problems for everybody.

I’m getting Small Soldiers vibes from these two pics of concept art and animation reels.
…
I like it!

Other people have pointed out that the plot seems very similar to the old, DTV Toy Story 2 plot line, which I think is fair.
I do think there is some potential here though, because after the first film, Buzz is really sidelined for the rest of the franchise. Woody leads all the action and Buzz gets B plots. I’d be interested in seeing Buzz lead a Toy Story film, and Woody taking a back seat, if that’s the intent this go around.

Having an army of diluted buzzes isng going to help develop his character though. It'll increase his screen time, sure, but doing the same types of things we've seen already. They never figured out what to do with him post toy story 2, so they are going back to the dilluted well, yet again.

Don’t forget the old Circle 7 plot for Toy Story 3, too.

I saw some comments saying the same on Twitter. It's been a while since I saw that movie and hardly remember it, but now that I've watched a trailer for it, it's true that the Buzz army part reminds of its plot. I guess they've probably taken inspiration from both it and the cancelled Circle 7 sequel. Although, it's likely
Small Soldiers was in turn inspired by the original
Toy Story, which had been released just three years before it came out. They're always copying each other in Hollywood.
I wonder how this will work, though, and in which way the defective Buzzes will "make considerable problems for everybody," as it says in the description. I guess they won't come alive in front of people and attack them like it happens on
Small Soldiers, or will they?

This is an idea I’ve also been considering too. Like if tech starts to take humans’ attention away from toys, will they have to break their rule of not being alive when kids are around and will Woody and his gang have to reveal themselves to be alive in front of Bonnie to have her help them with what they are about to be faced with? I honestly hope they do that.

If they come alive in a world where technology has advanced to 2024, would the humans even know? We already have robot toys with ai.

You really think humans will believe plush toys will be robots?
Come on, dude. That sounds like a bit of a stretch.

Why they don't make a movie about the toys creating their own country/toys without humans?
I guess they cant do that because it would make the kids feel bad for buying toys and disney makes tons from merch, but it's fucking cool idea
Like imagine how great would be a country for toys only

That second piece of artwork is literally a take on a famous scene in the movie "I, Robot", also a movie about the dangers of robots, artificial intelligence and them turning on humans because they think humans are a virus on earth. So we'll get "Toy Story does I, Robot"?!

Well, at D23 in Anaheim this past August, there was animation of the 50 Rogue Buzz Lightyear action figures with a red glowing light on their chests, so maybe we will. I think the red light means they’re AI-powered and/or controlled by someone or something.
