I don't base anything on ratings either (especially Rotten Tomatoes') but I would take critic ratings over user ratings any day. Users ratings are completely useless to me due to, IMO, their liking crap and hating very critically acclaimed films. I have 0 respect for user ratings on there.

I use rt ratings for reassurance when im going to a theatre but otherwise i dont rely on ratings.

Critics may sometimes be biased and let other things than the quality of the movie itself sway them too much but users are a whole lot worse in that regard. Just look at the ridiculous scores of movies on IMDB.

Guardians' reviews are rather mixed. I'd say it's probably out of the running.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rise_of ... ians_2012/

So now I'll say:
ParaNorman
Frakenweenie
Wreck-It Ralph

The Pirates! might have a chance, I think it definitely has more of an advantage over Brave but surely those last two slots will be filled by foreign animated films.

I think there are enough films eligible for 5 nominations. So my guess:

Paranorman
Wreck-It Ralph
Frankenweenie
Brave
Foreign animated film

Sounds about right. I personally dislike Paranorman, though.

Rise of the Guardians may yet sneak in. It has been getting pretty good reviews, 75 percent is fine, around the same level as Brave.

A big problem I have with their critics rating is that some are just reviews of the trailers and have just a paragraph. I have also wondered if the user rating are also merged with the "Want to see" percentage. The rating system I really did like was the Box Office Mojo's rating system, it was laid out really nice.

Oddly, the Secret World of Arrietty made it into the list. The HFPA must have different eligibility rules than the Academy.

That was very interesting, thanks for sharing!

2 thoughts..

- everyone talks about how animation is perceived as "for kids only" and that someone should do something about that and yet no one seems to want to go there.
- 2D animation. exactly the same as above. "it's great, it's awesome, we love it... we're not touching it".

:? :(

They're not the ones in charge. I'm pretty sure they'd love to change things drastically. But their hands are tied.

And yet Clements and Musker are the only ones (?) right now that seem to be trying creating a full length feature.

Don’t hold your breath that they’ll be allowed to create a 2D film.

Considering all the lukewarm reviews for RotG, that one’s probably knocked out of the Oscar race. It could still get nominated, I guess.

Well, Tartakovsky has actually been trying to make a Samurai Jack movie (done in the same style as the show) for years. I wouldn't be surprised if that was his next project following Popeye.

Plus, Tartakovsky actually animated a new hand-drawn short that played in front of some screenings of Hotel Transylvania and I imagine it will be on the DVD/Blu-Ray. So Ramsey isn't far-off when he says he's the most likely guy to make a hand-drawn animated feature in the near future.

I'm surprised WIR didn't get any nods for character animation.

Golden Globe nominations announced.

The Best Animated Feature nominees are:

Brave
Frankenweenie
Hotel Transylvania
Rise of the Guardians
Wreck-It Ralph

I'm really disappointed ParaNorman didn't get nominated. I guess the voters are Genndy Tartakovsky fans.
