I agree with you somewhat (you shouldn't pre-judge anything), but isn't it what people say about a film that makes it over or underrated? I think the Lion King's a good film, but people just go on and on about what a masterpiece it is, and that leads me to believe that it's overrated.

Somewhat true. Aladdin often gets overshadowed by The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

Every Disney movie released after "The Lion King" is underrated. Damn those lions!!!

OVERRATED DISNEY FILMS:

- The Lion King
Good but not great.
- Beauty and the Beast
I find it to be somewhat overrated (one critic has gone to say it's the best animated film, and I disagree), but I still consider it one of Disney's best animated films to date.
- Finding Nemo
Hugely overrated. Fun, beautifully animated and a terrific vocal cast, but I felt it lacked an essential something.
- Hercules
Lively fun, but terribly forgetful.
- Tarzan
I never liked this film at all.

UNDERRATED DISNEY FILMS:

- The Rescuers
Not the best animation in the world, but it had a rough likeability that grew on you with multiple viewings.
- Mulan
Certainly one of Disney's best underrated films - an independent heroine not unlike Ariel or Jasmine, beautiful animation and a slow but lively pace.
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame
A beautifully epic storyline with terrific animation and excellent voice casting - I wish the humor and some of the songs were reworked to better serve the story's pace (too bad the DTV sequel was awful).

DISNEY FILMS THAT RIGHTLY EARN THEIR CLASSIC STATUS:

- The Little Mermaid
- Aladdin
- Sleeping Beauty
- Bambi
- Snow White

I know some people think Finding Nemo is over-rated too. I can't comment about Brother Bear because I haven't seen the entire movie yet.

Lilo and Stich is under-rated. It needs more love and attention.

Underrated:

Dumbo - One of my favorites, but it seems the only thing it's known for is Baby Mine and the kooky Pink Elephants. What about how his mother was thought to be mad when in reality she was protecting her son from a pissy little boy? Or the stork and their pre-Mary Poppings gag of a heavy bundle falling through a cloud?

Ichabod and Mr. Toad - nothing much to say except it deserves more praise than it gets, and shouldn't be chopped in half most of the time (most people know only one or the other, and don't know it's from one film)

The Black Cauldron - Disney's black sheep, they should've at least TRIED to make it successful.

Brother Bear - if only if only if only Disney could have had THIS be their last 2D movie instead of Home on the Range. They could have gone out with a small bang rather than a whimper.

Overrated:

Bambi - I just don't get this film.

The Jungle Book - Walt's last picture, oh joy. I could never sit through the entire thing, yet it gets a lot of praise just because it was Walt's last picture. I bet if he was around in the 80s and died two weeks before Black Cauldron, that would be the big praise it gets.

The Lion King - just because it's based on a famous Shakespeare play doesn't mean it's Shakespeare quality. I was kinda hoping that those animals would run over Simba the way they did Mufasa, and I rooted for Scar over Simba even though he turned Pride Rock into a desolate wasteland.

Hercules - It's not really overrated or anything, I just don't like it.

Overrated:

"THE LION KING": I'm sorry to bust every disney fan's bubble but this isn't the epitome of disney movies, always never loved this movie besides it's a balant rip-off of the anime classic "Kimba". Please don't kill me, *runs away from TLK fans*.
" Snow White": It's good but "Pinocchio" is better in my opinion.
"Cinderella": very good but i prefer "Sleeping Beauty".

Underrated:

We've heard that before, haven't we? We may also have heard the opinion that they're BOTH "rip-offs" of a much older story.

Overrated: The Lion King, Toy Story II, Finding Nemo, Mulan
They're all great, really. Just not as amazing as everyone makes them to be.
Underrated: A Bug's Life, Hercules, Brother Bear, Pocahontas, Hunchback, The Fox and the Hound.
Yeah, they're all loved and cherished, BUT they all fall under the critique of "pale in comparission". That's a false statement, period. These films are beautiful works of art. Flawed, but beautiful anyway.

Overrated:
Cinderella- Really bland piece of fluff. The story is uninspiring, the songs are forgettable (and the only ones that are memorable are memorable because they're annoying) and there's not a single character I cared about. Not even the villain(who really isn't a villain) or the sidekicks.

Alice In Wonderland- It's amusing in places, and it didn't deserve to bomb, but the cult following it has overrates it.

101 Dalmatians- The story is about as simple as you get: "Villains kidnap puppies, parents go rescue them". THAT'S IT! It's amazing how people at Pixar always say "Story is always the key", yet a classic film like this has a mediocre story. It's just dragged out by scenes being longer than they need to, and boring sidekicks. Plus it was the animation that paved the way for the reused animation in the 70's films.

The Little Mermaid- Well, I like it, but it's definetely the weakest of the Fab Four and not as great as people say it is. I also like how the villain is more likeable than all those annoying "heros". Ariel has to much of an "edge", King Triton was a jerk, Flounder is too whiney, and Prince Eric is just as 2Dimensional as those early Disney princes were. Overall, great songs decent story overall, but what's they hype about? Must be nostalgia.

Pocahontas- "Meh". Nuff said.

Hunchback of Notre' Dame- How did this get in the UD top 20 countdown again?  Mediocre in almost everyway(except for a great villain).

Lilo and Stitch- Like TLM, it's good, but it's not THAT good.

Finding Nemo- You KNEW it was coming!

The Incredibles- It's incredible the first few times you watch it, but the more I watched it, the more unoriginal I found it to be, ruining the experience. Overall I do like it and would rank it above Finding Nemo, A Bug's Life and MAYBE Monster's Inc.(can't decided which is better) and would see a sequel, but it's not quite the masterpiece some people make it out to be.

Underrated:

Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros- Shame two such gems are overlooked. They're two of Walt's best! Plus Joe Carioca rocks!

The Jungle Book-You might say "WHAT?" as TJB isn't really underrated, but it's a shame nobody is looking forward to this Platinum Edition and often call it "overrated". It's really a cool film. I've been looking forward to it more than any Platinum title since Bambi.

The Great Mouse Detective- Great fun. Shame not many remember it. It's got one of the finest voice cast for an animated film ever!

The Rescuers Down Under- Better than the original. Shame it wasn't part of the fab four instead of TLM.

A Goofy Movie- Netty can tell you why.

Treasure Planet- An amazing work of art that wonderfully adapts the novel! It's a great movie in everyway as far as I can see. In fact, it's now in my top 5 Animated Classics. How did it flop again?

Brother Bear- Should've won the Oscar instead of FN, says I.

Home on the Range- Sure it's not perfect, but it's a great movie on many levels. Shame audiences blame Eisner for the end of 2D, when it's really their fault!

Chicken Little- A fun awesome little adventure. May not be the best Disney movie ever, but I think it's a really good start of a new format for Disney. It looks like it'll only improve with MTR!

Overrated:

The Lion King- Good movie, but no where near the best of Disney

Cinderella- See "Lion King"

Chicken Little- The worst animated classic of all time, and definately deserves zero percent of the praise it gets.

Lilo and Stitch- I never saw what the hype was. It's an ok movie, but really, how did Atlantis and Treasure Planet bomb, when this prevailed?

Underrated

The Black Cauldron- Could have been a smash hit, if marketed properly. Great film.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire- Another great film, lived in the shadows of Shrek that summer.

Treasure Planet- This movie has been growing on me a lot. I've started to have a growing appreciation for this film.

I'm surprised at my picks from the last time I replied here (Nov. 2004). If I were to revise it, I'd pick these:

Underrated:

Dumbo - Still as underrated as ever. Disney doesn't give it much attention despite the fact that of the first five DACs, this and Snow White were the only ones to actually turn a profit in its initial release

Package Features (SA, TTC, MMM, F&FF, MT, I&MT)- I enjoy watching them, but don't own any of them yet. I hate how some people just toss them out when they make a list of good DAC's. Make Mine Music is a wonderful, if random, blend of various live-action and animated segments.

Robin Hood - It succeeds in most places where some previous classics failed, and yet is also tossed to the side because it's from Disney's "Dark Age". Give me Robin Hood over Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty any day of the week!

The Black Cauldron - Still the undeserving black sheep in Disney's DAC canon.

Brother Bear - As I said in my last post, if only Disney could have had THIS be their last 2D movie instead of Home on the Range. They could have gone out with a small bang rather than a whimper.

Chicken Little - I don't see why people treat this film so viciously! They never set out to make the next Lion King (though I wonder why they'd want to...). It's a fun 81-minute romp in the cutesy town of Oakey Oaks. And if you enjoy it, you enjoy it. If you don't, you don't, but don't go out of your way just to voice your disapproval. It's NOT the worst thing to come out of Disney, it's NOT the killer of 2D and Disney, it's merely a fun little comedy! Not every animated classic has to be perfect. Beauty and the Beast isn't, and it's my favorite of favorites...

Overrated:

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - I remember an old school playground rhyme we used to recite. "First is the worst, second is the best, third is the one in the treasure chest". Likewise, Snow White is okay but nowhere near great, Pinocchio is far better, and Fantasia is the animation standard...

Bambi - Nice to look at, a good coming-of-age story, but boring as hell no matter how you try to spin it.

The Jungle Book - (pretty much my old comments, since they still sum up my feelings) Walt's last animated picture, oh joy. The Lion King - T/P understands why. And so does everyone else. It's certainly not the crowning achievement of WDFA, and doesn't get better with age. I mean, when I first saw it, I enjoyed it, but over the years, it's like fish. Good for three days, then starts to stink...

Lilo and Stitch - I have to say, since 2004, I've grown to enjoy this film more than ever, but at the same time, find that it's been marketed waaaay too much. Plus, Stitch's Great Escape ruins the appeal for me...

I still haven't seen Saludos Amigos yet. I've only seen The Hunchback of Notre Dame once (in the '90s) and about 30-something minutes of The Emperor's New Groove on one occasion, so I don't think it's fair of me to judge anything after Pocahontas (for me, the Disney magic died with Hunchback of Notre Dame, which I didn't like at all). But that's a very good question. I didn't mention any of the other movies because when someone is overrating or underrating one of these movies on this list, it's only a few people. I think most people have the same basic opinion on these movies. Except Cinderella, I think a lot of people feel really differently about that one. Besides, I think most people agree Dumbo is one of the greatest Disney classics ever made. How many people disagree who've seen it, especially here? Not enough to count it out.

Okay, now I'm running myself in circles. Anyway, I didn't mention most of those because I felt most people feel the same about it. Or in the same basic ballpark. For something to be overrated, there sort of have to be 2 camps that like it and they have to be different. Same with underrated with 2 that dislike it. So I feel like there are only 3 basic opinions with these movies - like, okay, don't like.
