Will they put this special on Disney+ as well?
@UmbrellaFish, I also wish for the movie to be released in 4K, with a new restoration.

I almost forgot this special was airing! I missed the first 7 minutes, but watched the rest.
It was alright. I think there are better docs on Poppins out there, though. Nothing revelatory here and too many fluff pieces with celebrities who have absolutely no connection to Mary Poppins— Josh Gad and John Stamos, I’m looking at you.
I was suspicious of this phrasing in the press release “a special interview with Julie Andrews.” I feared that was code for “archival interview footage only,” and that’s what we got. Oh well! At least I didn’t have my hopes up for anything better!
Still, we got new bits with Dick van Dyke and Karen Dotrice (frankly not enough— honestly, I think Josh Gad got more screentime than either of them). So many of the cast and crew from Poppins have passed away in the last 15 years or so that we are very lucky to have any new interviews with those who are still with us. It makes me sad to think that one day, Karen Dotrice will be the last member of the cast giving these types of interviews.
I watched the ending with “The Last Verse,” and that made me tear up. Mainly just thinking about all the documentaries I watched growing up with Richard Sherman. Of course his songs impacted my life, but he was always such an engaging personality in those documentaries— his stories about Walt Disney almost made it feel like he was brought back to life. RIP. I’m feeling a rewatch of The Slipper and the Rose coming on…
Anywho, I’m glad Disney is marking Mary Poppins’ 60th anniversary in some fashion. I’m looking forward to the merchandise collection dropping in the New Year.
Vlad, yes, this special comes to Disney+ and Hulu tomorrow.

I will watch it today as part of my Thanksgiving celebration. But I’ve always despised it when these kind of programs focus more on “today’s celebrities” who have absolutely no connection with the film being honored as opposed to interviews and archival footage of those who are still around. Or who are experts (like a Leonard Maltin, for example) on the subject. That’s why I no longer watch the WDW Christmas specials. Too many performers and not enough parks.

I just watched it. It's always a joy seeing the behind the scenes footage. I also teared up at Richard Sherman's "The Last Verse."

Watched the first part, but need to finish! I had no idea there was a TV show version of Mary Poppins in the 1950s!! That was new to me to be honest. I also didn’t know MGM had the rights to the book first.
Yea I was suspicious of the interview with Julie Andrews wording. Disappointed it wasn’t new. I fear she might be done talking about her movies. At least for free (from the tea I have gotten recently).
Josh Gad and John Stamos were at the Richard Sherman tribute event a few weeks ago. I attended it and they performed. I assume their interviews were taped around this time!
Currently watching Mary Poppins on ABC.

I had heard of the TV production of Poppins (I actually had a college professor who was close friends with the OG Mary, Mary Wickes, but I never got to ask him much about her). But the Goldwyns optioning Poppins was news to me, too. I almost mentioned that in my last post. I’d love to dig into that archive and see what they were preparing before the rights went back to Travers.

Mary Wickes was great friends with Lucille Ball. In addition to that one 1952 appearance on I Love Lucy, she made several appearances on The Lucy Show from 1962-1965. She also played the housekeeper on the Annette serial on the Mickey Mouse Club in 1957. She voiced much of Laverne in Hunchback in 1996.
I also saw her in On Moonlight Bay and By the Light of the Silvery Moon with Doris Day, White Christmas, The Trouble with Angels and The Music Man to name just a few of her non Disney work.
She was also the live action model for Cruella deVil in 101 Dalmatians and voiced the pup named Freckles.

Another Disney connection— she is Sister Mary Lazarus in the Sister Act movies.
She was definitely a lot closer to Travers’ physical description of Mary Poppins than Julie Andrews.

I was surprised to learn (if I understood correctly) that Mary Poppins in 1964 was the first Disney film to have an official Hollywood premiere since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937. I guess I just assumed that other big or important films such as Pinocchio, Cinderella, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, etc, had official premieres.

My family all chipped in and got me the 60th Anniversary Vinyl Collection for Christmas. It is an absolute treasure. It is very heavy and the box set seems to be made of very sturdy cardboard. The box art is just as beautiful in person as it appears in the online images. I’m actually afraid to play it with my subpar equipment, I don’t want to accidentally damage the records. Someday I’ll get a better setup and listen to them. For now, I’m just glad Mary Poppins finally got a beautiful box set befitting its legendary status and that I get to display it. A real treasure!

Umbrella, it gives me such joy that you’re a Mary Poppins fan.
I haven’t owned a vinyl record player in 40 years but I’d love to have the Mary Poppins set if they ever release it on CD.
I have the Sound of Music deluxe CD set from last Christmas and I absolutely adore it!

About half of the box set’s contents were originally released as a Legacy Collection CD, so if you have that release you already have a lot of what’s included in this box set— even the artwork used for the vinyl set reproduces a lot of the artwork created for the Legacy CD.
Of the LPs exclusive to the set I’m actually maybe most excited to listen to the “children’s album” version of Poppins featuring Marni Nixon as Mary, Bill Lee as Bert, and Richard Sherman as Uncle Albert!
I have been eyeing that TSOM release all year. In the past month I’ve seen it go for around $60 on Walmart’s website, but it always goes out of stock before I can nab it.

I have the MP legacy collection so thanks for the head’s up!
I’m a big fan of Marni Nixon and I’d love to have a CD of that album.
I have listened to several of her tracks on YouTube.
TSOM deluxe 5 CD version soundtrack is so worth the money if you can swing it.
I listen to it in my car at obscene volume very often as well as my other R&H recordings especially the recent complete recordings of Oklahoma! and Carousel as well as the remastered recording of Streisand’s Hello, Dolly! .

@UmbrellaFish, I'm so happy you got the box set and that you love it so much.
I really hope that Disney will release the movie in 4K some day, along with The Sound of Music.

2025 would be a great year for Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music (and Sleeping Beauty and so many DACs) to be released on 4K!
Items from the 60th Anniversary collection have been spotted at Disneyland, including the LE doll and figurine. The doll will be released on DisneyStore.com on January 13th:
There are a lot more stock photos of the doll online as well:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think any Disney catalogue titles got released last year. Right? So I speculate it has something to do with Disney handing over disc distribution to Sony, and once whatever needs to be worked out gets worked out, we’ll start seeing catalogue titles on 4K and BD again. I certainly hope so!!

I think only the new titles were released last year.
