John should still do it. All he has to do is change character and story. Newt would be about a crazy Republican, who's on a quest to stop those evil "Islamic Atheist" that are secretly trying to build a communist monarchy in the heart of Amerikkka.
That would be Newt. I think it would be a killer.

Ditto. I want to print some of the artwork to hang up in my bedroom. ^_^
I'm kind of upset they even released it.
It had so much potential.
I know what you mean!
Still have to see Rio though.

Any chance they would ever put this back into production, maybe after enough time had passed where audiences wouldn't easily associate it with Rio?
I'm not sure how far along the film got in development. Were the CG models already created when they cancelled the film or was it only in visual development?

As far as I know it was only in visual development. But who knows, maybe they had some rough models to test some new technique.
I think it could go either way. Frankly I don't think too many people would compare anything to rio, it wasn't that memorable of a story in the first place. Plus if they worked on it long enough I'm sure they could make Newt different enough. How hard can it be, rio has already been released, its no longer a moving target.

Well, Rio does have a sequel coming out next year, so it might take a little while longer to leave peoples' minds. Especially if it becomes popular enough to become Blue Sky's newest long-running franchise.

Every time new artwork comes in, the more gutted I am.
This project looks like it could've been the most beautiful of all Pixar features. Some of the artwork is really stunning.
I do wonder if Rio was the main reason it was cancelled. Alpha and Omega surely wouldn't have factored in it given the studio and how bad it looks.
Sadly, Rio is just really quite bad. It's so geared to kids I wouldn't watch it again despite having some beautiful scenes and catchy songs in it itself.
If Pixar maybe made it more adult, it could really take off and I don't think anyone would compare it to Rio.

So, not only because of Rio, but also because of Inside Out?

Rio can rot in hell for destroying this intriguing movie. Is the Dia de Los Muertos movie officially cancelled now that that other one is coming out this year? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to admit I'm glad Newt didn't happen--the awkward, bland romance doesn't sound too interesting--but a lot of the art is/was very beautiful.
