I came upon some articles about several of the Disney princesses. The great thing about them is that they are not fluff pieces, but actually offer genuine information/trivia about Disney's leading ladies. Since we're all Disney fans here, chances are you already know most, if not all, of the tidbits from these articles. It's a fantastic read nonetheless. Enjoy!
Aurora
Ariel
Belle
Jasmine

I had no idea about Ariel's dresses. I had noticed similarities, but I just figured they were coincidences.
I've only read Ariel's so far, but I'm going to read the others next. Thanks, Mooky!

Me neither which is quite suprising being a life long Ariel fanatic!!! How very intresting, thanks alot for posting
BTW Just out of intrest has anyone printed and created any of the Constructable Castle's offered on the Disney Princess site? I thought it was a pretty neat idea, although I don't have sturdy card to print on and they would take up alot of ink! If anyone has please post picture's I would love to see! My favorite's are
Ariel's, Mulan's, Aurora's and
Tiana's although the other five are great aswell!

Hey, I wasn't really sure where to post this, but I have a question. I have been trying to figure out how old all of the princesses are, and found 8 of the 9 ages:
Snow White - 14
Cinderella - 18
Aurora - 16
Ariel - 16
Jasmine - 15
Belle - 19
Mulan - 17
Tiana - 19
But how old is Pocahontas meant to be in Disney version. I am aware that in 1607, the real Matoaka was 12, but I don't think Disney's Pocahontas is 12.... Does anyone know?

How do you know Cinderella, Jasmine, Belle and Mulan ages?

I don't remember where I found them all, so in all fairness, they may not be 100% accurate, although I know that someone specifically said that Cinderella was 18 on UD somewhere.....
As for Jasmine, she's a few days shy of her sixteenth birthday in the original "Aladdin."

The Belle, Cindy, Mulan are pretty good guesses. I would switch Belle's and Cindy's age, as Cindy look older(actually look like she in her 20's)
As for Poca, she definitely have to be in her 20's

Yeah, I kind of thought that, too. But on the other hand, it seems pretty odd to me that she would be in her 20s and still unmarried. Usually, Indian women tended to marry sometime in their teens, and generally not too long after puberty. But she's certainly older than Snow.

Jasmine's age was never disclosed in any of the "Aladdin" movies - Sultan said she had to be married by her
next birthday. People only assume it's 16 because that's Disney's magical number when it comes to princesses' ages. Another thing: on the DVD, Musker and Clements say they envisioned Aladdin to be around 18 and there's that whole story about how an early version of Aladdin was deemed too young for Jasmine's liking, so I figure she must be around 17-18 as well.
And I think you're right about Mulan. I have a sticker album from when the movie came out and it says she's 17.
As for Pocahontas, IIRC, some of the promo material described the movie as a romance between the 18-year old Indian princess and the 25-year old English adventurer, but they both seem older than that.

That's a really good point about Jasmine... she just seemed kind of young to me, so I sort of thought 15-going-on-16 was a good estimate. Older than Snow by a good deal, but closer to Ariel's age than Cinderella's. Besides, most of the time in the olden days, the man was older than the woman. And I think they made Jasmine look a bit younger than the version they had paired with the early Aladdin, too, because in one of the deleted scenes, he looked younger than in the finished film, while she looked older.... But yes, it is something to think about.
Good to know that Mulan's has been verified!
As for Pocahontas, again, I would doubt that she'd be much older than 18 for simple cultural reasons.... She'd be sort of an old maid, and even being 18 could explain just how eager Powhatan was to set her up with Kocoum. I don't know, those are the ages that I would imagine them being, but I'm not good at guessing ages.

Thanks for posting those links, Mooky! I really enjoyed all of them. They were very interesting.
I definitely disagree with some of the princess' fashion grades though. There's no way Ariel and Pocahontas have the best outfits! Especially since they only rated Ariel's seashells!

A couple of new articles detailing the inspiration behind the visual style of Disney's original six princess films. It's a great read for Disney (and art history) buffs. Enjoy!

This is the first time I've read many of the links you posted, Mooky, and they are fantastic. The Disney Princess history articles are great. They prove that there is more to the princesses than just a pretty dress and Prince Charming. It's fascinating to read about how these characters came to be.
As for the Disney Princess Fashion link... I have the feeling that it was done in tongue and cheek. Really, Ariel and Pocahontas wear very minimal (in Ariel's case VERY minimalistic) outfits, yet they score the highest. While the other princesses that DO wear royal gowns get Bs, Cs and Ds.
Really, the writer didn't see The Princess and the Frog because the blue dress isn't even Tiana's, it's Charlotte's! Tiana just borrowed it because her peasant outfit was messed up at the party. So if anyone is to blame for the "Miss America Tiana" is Charlotte... LOL
Ironically, the blue dress is the tamest of Lotte's collection... XD

Yes, thank you Mook for those marvelous articles. Some stuff I (and I'm sure others) knew, quite a bit I didn't.
I must question where the author got some of their information and if they are right or not, though. They may even have made conclusions themselves without much facts or information from a particular source, in some cases.
They forget to mention that Cinderella was going for baroque, too, in some parts (a background artists revealed), and this was a much earlier century than the romantic era (the architecture of Cinderella can be attributed more to an earlier, baroque time, the time Perrault wrote the story). Maybe they just didn't know.
Also, they forgo to mention other things, like the fact that castles, not just churches, had stained-glass windows that didn't depict religious things.
The author seems to just know more about certain other films, for instance we got more info on the princesses they had done previous "what they didn't tell you" articles on.
The author even may be failing to say correct things, like saying Sleeping Beauty was the last hand painted animated film from Disney. That was actually The Little Mermiad. But if the author is correct about certain other things, I like knowing them a lot!
Pap, while I agree that fashion thing was a little tongue in cheek and I agree on the grades not being too fair, I think the author was fine calling that Tiana's dress as it is the dress she is more associated with in the Disney Princess line (or at least it's one of them), it's like her dress, and it does more fit Tiana (espeically in her taste, personality, and mood) than Charlotte. One wonders why Charlotte would even have it.

That's exactly what drew me to these articles. There's such a rich history behind these characters and their movies, and it's painful to see what Disney did and still does to them.

So what defines a "Disney Princess"? Merely a human princess in a Disney movie?

I'm loving all these princess articles, thanks for posting, Mooky!
It's been a while since I've looked at this thread. I do recall in one of my art books that those who worked on Aladdin stated Jasmine was originally supposed to get married at 16, but they dropped the specific age in favor of leaving it as the more ambiguous "next birthday." Why? They were afraid of offending people by making it look like they were endorsing young marriages (which makes me wonder if they ever got flack for Ariel's age). Regardless, 17 going on 18 feels much more accurate to me for Jasmine than 15 going on 16 does.
yamiiguy wrote:So what defines a "Disney Princess"? Merely a human princess in a Disney movie?
It's a marketing ploy. A character like Eilonwy is technically a princess but is not considered a "Disney Princess." A character like Mulan is not actually a princess in her film but is considered a "Disney Princess" regardless.
