I think that's right because the video signals are played at different frequencies. Try to play a PAL signal on an NTSC TV and the picture jumps and has no color.

Yes.

But, although here in Europe most TV sets can display both PAL and NTSC and most PAL VCRs can play both PAL and NTSC, I still don't think they can be used to create NTSC copies of PAL VHS cassettes. That's where more professional equipment comes in.

I have the Italian Pal VHS and I've found a rare copy of the english version. I like it very much and I think the film is no more razist than Gone With the Wind.

I own a PAL Vhs of this film, which I paid lots of $$$$ for, and after watching it, it was an ok film, but I personally didn't think it was all that great. And it DEFINITELY wasn't as controversial as its reputation. I loved the Uncle Remus stories growing up, so it does have some nostalgic value to me, but I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Perhaps if I wasn't so distracted by the TERRIBLE picture quality on mine, as I had to have it converted to NTSC. After watching the film, it seems the only thing people would be upset about is not that it depicts slavery on a plantation, but that the slaves seem to be happy....

I have owned the Japanese LaserDisc of "Song of the South" for almost 20 years now, and I can make copies of it to VHS or as I have done for my friends, copies to DVD+RW. There is no loss in picture quality or sound, and I have had no complaints from those I have supplied with copies. The one thing that has always bothered me about this release is that the Japanese subtitles are on the left side of the screen and only when they are singing. There are no subtitles when there is dialogue. Hmmmm, makes me wonder.

Incidentally, I do agree that this movie is no more racist than "Gone With The Wind". It is a must have for all Disney collector's and I can't wait to see if it truly is going to be released in 2006 here in the US.

I think I must have the same copy of it that you do. I wont say how or where I got the copy, but I have seen it.

As far as "racism" in Song of the South, if anything I feel that it is more complimentary to Blacks than whites. After all, wasn't it the "white" mother that was being inconsiderate of her son? Uncle Remus was teaching the boy good morals and etc.

Yeah, if Song of the South is racist, Gone with the Wind must have been made by the KKK.

In any case, I will be first in line to buy SotS when (if) it is released on DVD. It's a great film in cinematic history. I hope it has some commentary by Leonard Maltin to give us a good historical perspective. He's one of my favorite film historians that supports the unedited release of controversial films such as this. I thank Maltin for helping get the Disney Treasures out. We owe him a debt of gratitude, IMO.

I own it on DVD. I can't say how, but let's change the subject. lol. So, yes, I've seen it. But, its not as great as its cracked up to be. So Dear To My Heart is a much better film and its available on VHS, and I think DVD.

I got the video at the Disney Store when I passing through London about ten years ago. I put it on a DVD, and the picture quality could be better, but it's good enough for me until the official release in the US (which will hopefully come soon). I think a lot of people get their expectations up too high for it. They assume it's the greatest film ever because everyone talks about wanting to own it. Most people probably only want it because they can't have it yet.

I, for one, think it's quite enjoyable and charming. It's classic Disney entertainment, and the animated sequences are wonderful. The music's great, the story's nice, and James Baskett is great as Uncle Remus. Maybe I'm just not very sensitive, but I don't get what's any more offensive about it than a million other things that are easily available. I've always liked it always will. If you can find one, it's worth seeing so you can have your own opinion of it instead of trusting the rest of us.

I would have thought this short wold have been ideal to put on the "Babes in Toyland" DVD as an extra...

I suppose that would have been too much to ask Disney.
