I don't buy this Aladdin sold poorly because of racism or anti-arab feelings in the US caused by 911. Really, 2099. You're in the UK. We aren't running around the US burning torches screaming "Kill the rag heads!" I don't know where you get off telling us that we hate arabs. Our media and government praises arabs and pushes their ways above ours. There still is no hate mongering.

I think Aladding didn't do well because there were too many DVDs in the market. Remember all the stories at the time of how all titles were failing due to there being so many? Some people may remember Aladdin being dated too. But please, racism. Give me a break.

Well to fuel the flames, the UK site has been rejigged. And the platinum section (referred to as the "vault" films on the UK website) clearly lists the 14 platinums, and guess what. Aladdin is out, Alice is in on there too.

Well you don't have to be running around with torches do you? Look at all the fuss over The Dixie Chicks about one comment they made in London.

A little web research shows that Fahrenheit 9/11 actually came out the same week as Aladdin.

Now, given most sales of a DVD are in the 1st week or two, and Fahrenheit 9/11 controversy would be at a peak, I can easily believe the same people who had the mentality to boycott The Dixie Chicks may have decided not to buy an animated film for their children with populated by arabs - remember it was little before this time we had the Abu Ghraib expose which incited more attacks on coalition troops in Iraq. US Troop deaths were still generally increasing just as Aladdin was released, and most definitely in the news of the time.

So some parents may have decided just to buy another animated film instead - especially if - as you say, there was a general glut of releases.

does anyone think the announcement of the new Disney/Burton Alice in Wonderland have anything to do with Alice's upgrade to Platinum?

Why did they kicked out Aladdin?.

Oh I Quite Agree with that.... Remember what happened this past March... Peter Pan got a Platinum Edition.... To help promote Disney's Tinkerbell Movie (which at the time was planned to be released later in 2007 I think) And the timespan is about right.... 2011 Alice in Wonderland comes to Platinum Edition DVD (and Possible/Probable Blu Ray disc)and shortly after that this Disney/Burton Alice comes to theaters.....

Also remember one of the first Disney Blu Ray trailers showed that was being advertised on Disney DVD: coming to Blu Ray was.... Alice in Wonderland was in that list as well as they pictured it....A wonderland full of immersive Bonus Features (or something to that effect)... Also it did show Aladdin as well... as too many for me to remember off the top of my head

So It wouldn't surprise me a bit if Disney has been planning this all along... But I Still think We will see Aladdin eventually... And this whole 9/11 having to do with sales of Aladdin.... Who knows... I don't think it was/is the case though... Perhaps the American Idol (oh i forget his name) singing the lost song scared people off :P (note* just kidding)

But I Still think We will see Aladdin eventually...
Perhaps to tie in with the live-action Aladdin in development?

If that's the reason that Aladdin was removed from the March 2011 Platinum spot, then I'll be somewhat relieved.

But 2099, you aren't getting it. There really weren't that many people here in America who boycotted the Dixie Chicks, went after Michael Moore, or hate Arabs. Most Americans are so caught up in their own lives that they just don't care. I'd like to see some proof that what you say is true other than a gut feeling. You probably can't understand what it's like to be an American because you like in the UK. Most Americans could care less about world events or politics. I'd say at the most maybe 10% of the population passionately cares for any of these things. I still don't see a connection in boycotting Aladdin and Michael Moore. I still say the most likely reason is that 2004 was a big release year and that fall had a ton of releases. Wasn't that the fall with the big Star Wars DVD set? With so many A list choices to choose from a film like Aladdin could easily fall by the wayside. We also didn't nearly get as many TV ads for that release as we have for the rest. You really need to look at all the data before you start shouting racism.

I'm very pleased that 'Alice' is being rereleased (or, rather, released for the first time as a platinum) as it is one of the Disney films with the most interesting production. It's interesting to see how long it was in development, and there seem to have been literally hundreds of ideas considered and rejected from the project's conception, which was before even 'Snow White'. I don't know the full details, but some examples Brian Sibley has given include parallels between real-world Dinah and dream-world Cheshire Cat, the Duchess (who doesn't appear in the final film) plugging her crying baby's mouth with a cork, and a military-looking centipede leading Alice to the caterpillar. I also absolutely love the David Hall sketches (one of his watercolours is shown in my current avatar) from this period in the film's development.
Unfortunately I'm reluctant to believe that a long documentary will be included, for the same reason I don't think 'Sleeping Beauty' will have one. To go into the film's production in detail would inevitably mean some of the negative aspects of production would have to be included, and the PE DVD documentaries have thus far been only praising of the films.

You've got a good point. There was barely a whisper on The Emperor's New Groove DVD about the nightmarish race to come up with something when Kingdom of the Sun sank. Then again, Disney's been a bit more honest lately in its supplements, mentioning production problems on films like Aladdin, Lady and the Tramp, and The Jungle Book. Plus, Disney seems to have no shame in bashing Alice for some reason. If you watch the Peter Pan DVD, virtually everytime Alice is mentioned, it's labeled as a failure. On the Lady and the Tramp DVD, the DVD producers basically blame Alice for the rift between Walt Disney and Joe Grant. I won't even get into books about Disney films in general. I've yet to encounter one that speaks favorably of Alice outside of its design.

Yes, it's unfair. Though I think some of the earlier, abandoned 'Alice' ideas were better than the version that ended up on the screen (but I can really only think of about five or six Disney films this doesn't apply to), I definitely think it gets too much abuse. In a way, though, I'm glad it doesn't get as much publicity - it remains a sort of 'secret' film. It's probably my favourite 50s Disney film - certainly the most graphically interesting, and the most creative as well.

The Dixie Chicks comment happened in 2003 and since then they had one of the biggest-selling albums of 2006 and won 5 Grammy Awards. One group of people that blacklisted them does not speak for the entire country. =/

The Fahrenheit 9/11 interest was peaked while it was in theaters that summer. No one associated Aladdin's release with that, and if they did they were the very small minority.

Looking at that chart I'm not too worried just yet (it looks more like a screen shot that something sent to retailers, it even has the red spelling error line under "Platinum") and the UK site has never been the most accurate or up to date.

I think we need to see that list going to 2012 before we start worrying.

Pinocchio and Fantasia have been added into the spring slots before Snow White and Beauty and the Beast (as we've known for a while). Until now I always assumed they'd either do Lion King and Aladdin in one year or alter the re-release dates of later platinums. But looking at this I'd say Alice has been ADDED to the Spring slot before Lion King.

Are they going to just skip Aladdin and go to Bambi/Cinderella in 2012? It's possible, but Aladdin, despite whatever the DVD sales were, is one of Disney's most popular films so I can't see it just being dropped. What I'm actually wondering now is what will that add to the spring 2012 slot before Aladdin's fall re-release.

We know Alice has been added, but until we see a 2012 schedule we can't say Aladdin has been dropped. Alice is coming out before Lion King, Aladdin should be after it anyway.

The release chart is on the first page of this forum 2008-2011. I'm basing Aladdin's release as fall 2012 as it came out a year Lion King. Either they're skipping Aladdin and doing Bambi and Cinderella in 2012 or they will add another title to that year to fill the spring release slot.

Personally I think they'll add another rather than drop Aladdin. Dumbo would put the first 5 all in the platinum line. Or maybe they'll use the slot to finally release Lilo and Stitch 2-disc in the US. Or another of Menken's films (Pocahontas, Hunchback or Hercules, I know most would love a 2 disc of the Hunchback and Herc).

This is exactly what I think, as well. With Dumbo and Alice added, both golden eras of the studio from Walt's time will be part of the collection (the 30s/40s and the 50s). I always personally believed that both films deserved to be Platinums more than 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book (though I know many members here will disagree with me). If Dumbo goes out of print in the next couple of years, then we'll know for sure.

Dumbo's Big Top Edition and 60th Anniversary are still avalible on DVD, I don't own either, but I rather have 60th over Big Top.
