I think he either misunderstands or grossly overestimates the cinematic (or rather franchise) potential of Mary Poppins. It's not comparable to either of those properties, a more apt comparison would be to works like Paddington, Nanny McPhee, Winnie the Pooh, and even Patricia Highsmith's Ripliad. A collection of stories that are self-contained and there are no sequel hooks or an overarching narrative, but there are obvious references to other stories in the series.

In any case, as much as I liked MPR, I don't think another sequel should be made any time soon. Give it at least several decades before making another one, with a completely new lead actress as Mary Poppins. It would make each film in the series much more special and fresh.

Saw the movie on opening night here in The Netherlands, and just loved it. It’s a sweet movie and seeing it made me very happy. At first I was skeptical about the songs, but if you hear them over and over they get stuck in your head just like the original ones(although nothing can beat the og one).

Think it is sad it’s not doing so well at the box office, but then again, looking at the Disney Benelux section, marketing is really awfull. The movie is shown at most theaters at around 16.00 in the afternoon(english version). Like, no one will go to the cinema at that time(they don’t even show the Dutch synchronized version for the kids anymore). Also, nobody in my near environment even knew of this movie. So marketing was very poorly here. Same with the Nutcracker.

It could be doing better financially, but it earned back over $264 million worldwide ($145 mil domestically) so it managed to find its legs.

It's now at $151 million domestically, $288 million worldwide.

Every time I hear the soundtrack to this film I fall more and more in love with it...my absolute film of the year !

I was in Disneyland Paris this past week, and Mary Poppins was everywhere, much more so than ever before. But I wonder if Mary will appear in the parks in her current iteration, or Disney won’t do that and keep her in the Jolly Holiday outfit. Changing it up would ensure the current films legacy, I feel.

Personally, I think they should just have her in her nanny/casual getup. Mainly because she’s only in the JH attire for.... 10 minutes?

The previous setup was that Mary Poppins and Bert would be in their Jolly Holiday outfits during the summer season while they switch to their respective nanny and chimney sweeper outfits during the winter.

Mary Poppins has been nominated for four Oscars: Best Original Score, Best Original Song ("The Place Where Lost Things Go"), Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.

It's a shame the film missed out on a Visual Effects nomination. I was hoping the incredible work of Duncan Studio would be recognized.

It's a surprise Emily Blunt finally wasn't nominated for best actress.

Yes, it's a shame. Well, Disney still had a film nominated in the category (aside from Marvel and Lucasfilm's titles Infinity War and Solo), Christopher Robin.

Looking at which movies got nominated, I’m still surprised Mary Poppins has 4 nominations. The other categories are practically the same 5 movies over and over again. The Favourite gaining so many, proves it’s so random...like every other movie in 2018 was forgotten by a bunch of old men who only have their short term brain memory still working...

It's like that every year. Hollywood studios release the movies they deem likely to be nominated at the end of the year and organize expensive campaigns for them. Few movies that have been released early in the year or that haven't been campaigned for tend to get nominations in the top categories. In the end, it feels more like a film festival than anything else, with only a few movies that participate.

Aw, I really wanted to see one of the big songs nominated just so they could put a large number on stage. I just hope they don't include Lin-Manuel Miranda in the performance.

I'm quite fine with the number of award nominations this film got despite the snubbing of Emily Blunt's amazing performance as Mary Poppins. Very happy for the Production and Costume Designs and actually recognizing Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman's amazing song and score work which is the one that mattered to me the most.

I'm glad that's the song that got nominated! Also Costume Design and Production Design! Was hoping for Best Actress though...

I'm really gutted that Emily didn't get a nomination. I know she wouldn't have won, but it was absolutely nomination worthy ! I'm glad of the other nominations the film got of course. I hope it wins for score, but it will in no way have a chance of best song as Gaga I would assume has that one wrapped up again.

I wonder if Emily will perform it herself ? Just as Amy Adams did with 'Happy Working Song' ?

If Emily Blunt is angling for an Oscar, choosing the role of Mary Poppins was always going to be an uphill battle for that end goal. The landscape and politics surrounding Julie Andrews’ 1965 nomination and win are very particular to that time period and practically impossible to replicate.

At best, the Oscars are a rubber stamp of approval from one’s contemporaries. The true test of Mary Poppins Returns’ appeal will be in its longevity with audiences. Will families still be returning to it in 50+ years as they have with the original? That, I can’t possibly say.

Same. I would have loved to have seen A Cover is a Not a Book at the Oscars. Maybe they'll still go with one of their flashier numbers for a musical sequence though.
