There's nothing immoral about the Renaissance films.

I would say that the newer films like Frozen and Zootopia are superior in that they try to actively put forward relatively contentious moral messages at a time when those issues are particularly topical/divisive, as opposed to simply repeating accepted and perfectly banal wisdoms like in Beauty and the Beast (which simultaneously presents some rather unhealthy relationship dynamics) et al. Pocahontas is rather awful when it comes to tackling race, though.

As do I and many others. One of the common compliments given to the movie is that despite it being a "message film", it still works as an engaging narrative. Being offended by the fact that an animated movie would try to address cultural issues at all (as Kate Taylor of The Globe and Mail did) reeks of both immaturity and self-righteousness. As if the viewer knows what's best for everyone's children by projecting their own insecurities on them.

Though I will concede the music was better for the 90s features.

Zootopia tops the box office for the third weekend in a row and is about to surpass the entire Tangled cume at the box office:

It's another #1 finish for Disney's Zootopia as the animated hit crossed $200 million this weekend, topping all newcomers. […]. Dropping only 25.9%, Zootopia took in an estimated $38 million this weekend, bringing its overall cume to $201.8 million domestically, the third highest domestic total for a Walt Disney Animation Studios title (not adjusted for inflation). Additionally, it brought in another $64.8 million internationally, bringing its worldwide cume to $591.7 million, which places it just behind the $591.8 million Tangled brought in globally over the course of its entire run back in 2010.

And it's still yet to release in the UK (this Friday, to tie in with Easter) and Japan, which I'd imagine are two fairly strong territories for Disney.

This coming weekend, it should easily pass BH6 ($222M) to move up to #2 from WDFA.

Well I saw it this Easter weekend and I just plain LOVED it !! Totally unexpectedly so, as I'm truly not a fan of Disney's animal pictures.

It was full of charm, very funny, the world was extremely absorbing and intricate, the story was well written and executed, Judy was the perfect lead.

Gave me all sorts of old school Disney vibes, like Mulan and Lilo & Stitch. I took my father to see it and he absolutely loved it as well, and he's quite a tough audience !

All in all I can highly, highly recomend to Disney fans of all ages.

There is one thing they need to add to the extra material when the DVD and Blu-ray is released; the natural diet of rabbits in the real world.

Just as dalmatians became very popular after the 1961 movie, and clownfishes became popular after Finding Nemo, I'm guessing rabbits will become popular after Zootopia, even if the rabbits in the movie wear clothes and walks on two legs.

Make a short documentary, animated or live action (maybe Judy showing us what she eats outside the movie), where they said "Remember children, and adults, only give you rabbit a piece of carrot as a small treat no more than a twice a week. Explain that rabbits eats 80-90% grass and hay, some herbs, dark leafy vegetables and a small amount of proper pellets. And show a list of what is acceptable as rabbit food, what they can not eat and what they can only eat now and then. If you want to give the rabbit carrot, give them the green carrot leaves instead, which is much healthier for them.
Biology can be just as important as moral and politics.

Guys, any word on how this is performing in the UK?

I'm going to see this at a local cinema in a couple of hours. Hope it delivers.

Don't know if this has already been posted or not, but someone tried to piece together the plot of the early Zootopia concepts.

Wow, this was a really great and mature film from Disney! Frozen is still my favorite CG film from Disney because I'm partial to musicals and that was the first time they went all out in making a musical in years, but Zootopia is easily Disney's best CG film in terms of focused, quality storytelling and originality. So many vibrant characters, great world building, and a layered and engaging story with a relevant message. It was also incredibly funny and lighthearted so don't let all the talk of its social message fool you. It had just the right balance. The prejudice theme just fit the well-developed story.

Judy Hopps is certainly up there with the most likable Disney protagonists. She really surprised me and I'm glad they made her the main character. Ginnifer Goodwin did a great job with her vocal performance.

Surprise villains aren't exactly surprising in a Disney film anymore but it at least made sense with the crime/mystery element of this film. I still loved the character of Assistant Mayor Bellwether, both the "good" and evil versions. So cute!

Here's to hoping Moana is just as good, if not better. Disney is really on a roll so I'm glad Zootopia has exceeded most people's expectations, and is achieving so much critical and financial success! It's already surpassed Big Hero 6, Tangled, and Wreck-It Ralph by a very healthy margin and will continue to grow. I remember people saying it would flop

Though some things could belong to different versions of the story and the interpretation of the concept art sometimes may not be correct, the person who wrote it has discovered some interesting plot points and story details. But I have to say the final version is much better, so I'm glad they made the changes they did.

The bonus features seem great, especially the first two. I hope they are as in-depth as it says. But taking the last video releases from Disney animation into consideration, I wouldn't get my hopes up. The covers don’t look bad, but they could have been better.

I knew the three films had female protagonists, but I didn't realize that all their animated releases this year had that in common. This year it’s also the first time since 1999 that a total of three animated films by Disney and Pixar combined are released.

I didn't expect that documentary, but it was surprisingly insightful. The amount of detail about the film's prior script reminds me of The Sweatbox, which is refreshing compared to the more marketable and light "behind-the-scenes" stuff that Disney would typically air on ABC or include as DVD bonus features. I hope this sparks a trend (maybe while the crew from Fusion was producing this, they could've also been shooting footage for a similar documentary for Moana? That would be great).

Also, that deleted scene with the bear receiving the shock collar and then being shocked after getting too excited would have been one of the most heartwrenching things I've seen in a film in a long time if they stuck with the original plot.

People are trippin' over the tame collar fist version, but yeah I think nobody would love the city, unless they made a film noire version where you love to hate that dreadful place. Maybe a bit too dark for Disney.

And yet the part with the polar bears and the collar was so emotional, I loved it personally, in the comments one animator that apparently worked on the scene said that it was sad to see it go away.

Congratulations Zootopia! With Japan still to come April 23, Zootopia is now aiming for $900+million worldwide! It's also the #1 movie of 2016 in worldwide gross, surpassing Deadpool! You can only imagine the added pressure the Moana team is facing. The Moana team better bring it in June with that 1st trailer
