Ames wrote:*edit* I'm still watching the video I posted, and obviously Angela sang "he's our guest!"...how did the re-recording for the scene/reanimating of the scene happen? Like, they just came in for a short period, or were they doing other tweaks, needing everyone to come in (you know, how they have to come in numerous times to read)? I need to do some research on this!

*edit* This gives a little info:
Director Gary Trousdale points out that "Be Our Guest" was originally intended to be sung to Maurice. "The song had already been recorded and the sequence partially animated when we decided that it would be more meaningful if it was directed towards Belle," says Trousdale. "After all, she is one of the two main characters and the story revolves around her coming to the castle. We had to bring Jerry Orbach and all the other vocal talents back into the studio to change all references to gender that appeared in the original recording."

*edit*
I apparently haven't watched the great Platinum Edition documentary in forever; Don Hahn says that Howard Ashman did come back to spruce up the song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dC-ZlsYSpo
As you mentioned, the recording session footage of "Be Our Guest" featured there is from the Maurice version of the song. Jerry Orbach wears a blue shirt, and Angela Lansbury has a salmon-esque blouse. But when they use this footage on the Signature Collection's "The Recording Sessions" featurette, it's edited to have the re-dubbed lyrics, since Orbach sings "tie a napkin 'round your neck, cherie". The video has some kind of window decal over his mouth, but the way the rest of the face moves, you can tell he was actually saying "Monsieur" since it doesn't have as much chin movement as when someone says "Cherie." Likewise, when Lansbury is singing "He's our guest!" as depicted in the VHS trailer, we know it's the Maurice version. On "The Recording Sessions," they've dubbed it to have her sing "She's our guest!" which I guess they can get away with since the mouth movement for "he" and "she" is marginally different.

If you watch the "20/20" production report on Beauty and the Beast, you can see Orbach wearing a tan shirt for the re-dubbing session which occurred January 29, 1991. Unfortunately, they didn't include footage of Lansbury at the re-dub, but it makes sense, since Orbach does the lion's share of the singing in the film, whereas Lansbury probably just came in for a couple lines and was done much sooner (or before the "20/20" crew arrived).

Cinderella was the very first film I ever saw, as it was one of the earliest VHS tapes in our family's collection, so it had a lot of repeat viewings for a good two years or so. Over time, it got less play thanks to introductions to the likes of newer films (The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, etc.), but of all our clamshell VHS tapes, Cinderella has the most wear and tear which shows just how often we watched it as kids. It's also the only one that developed that glitch, which shows how often we played it compared to our other tapes. I bought another one just to have it look nice on the VHS shelf in my loft, but the original copy is still at my parents' house.

Escapay, I really don't like that Disney used false imagery for the recording featurettes! Don't you feel kind of sick by it? I love that Cinderella was your first film! It was mine, too. It's so cool you watched so many movies over and over that they wore and tore. It's cool the original still lives at your parents'. Mine still lives in the basement of my parents'...which is also still my home.

I had this idea for a Beauty and the Beast poster/home video cover. I decided to try drawing and coloring it myself. So here's celebrating you, Beauty and the Beast, and my bad drawing is by no means meant to be any insult to you, you masterpiece of a movie! I call this, "Captured Beauty". ^ Thanks for the super informative response!!!! :pink: :pink: :pink: I wish that WDAS uploaded all the making-ofs to Youtube, like they did for the 20/20 special! I just favorited them, and I'll watch them after work!!!!!

DD, I always love seeing your drawings on here- you're very talented!!!!!

That's a very pretty drawing! I love the composition and the idea you had so I can see why you were saying that you had an idea for a BATB cover which you wanted to share. Thank you so much for sharing and most importantly, thank you for making the rose pink. I cannot stand when home video covers make the rose red lol. The Broadway show and live-action remake certainly didn't help with this.

I really hope one of these days you'll consider making covers for other Disney classics as well since you've done such an amazing job with your Cinderella and BATB covers! At least the rest of the classic Disney fairy tales.

Thank you Amy and JeanGreyForever!

Amy, I actually think I am only slightly talented. I made Belle's face too pointy and it's kinda wonky, too, lol, but I drew the poster because I wanted to show my idea behind it. Thank you for what you said though, because it really touched me.

JeanGreyForever, thank you for you words and how appreciative you are of what I did. That really means a lot to me. I like the rose as it's true pink, too.

I actually had ideas for Snow White and Sleeping Beauty covers. My Snow White idea actually was basically done by Disney for Snow White's 30th Anniversary (EDIT: I meant 80th Anniversary!), but if you would like to see my own attempt at it, it would make me very happy to do that after all. I have some stuff I gotta worry about for now, but maybe this summer I will get to those two fairy tales, and then I can think of ideas for the other two Renaissance tales. Oh yeah, and then there's the Revival ones which are my least favorite lol.

Did you guys get my idea of my art? With what it represents? I may be asking what you guys all saw as really obvious but I thought I was being subtle, lol.

You're welcome :)

What was the Snow White 30th Anniversary poster? Yeah, you don't have to make those covers anytime soon, I just meant in the future if you ever plan on making anymore, I'm sure a lot of us would like to see your work. Lol, perhaps you could skip the Revival ones then if you're not interested especially since I know you were not a fan of Frozen II at all. Speaking of which, I need to rewatch that one of these days

Umm, I'm not quite sure what you're asking but you are trying to ask if we recognized that you put Belle over the rose to represent how she is the Beast's desire and his only hope to break the spell?

The Snow White 80th cover was this:

Image

My idea was pretty much the exact same thing. I'll still make it since you were interested in my own version.

I will never do Frozen II. I do not like that movie.

Well, what I meant by my poster was that Belle is standing near the rose and her reflection is on the bell jar the rose is inside, making it look like she is the Beast's captive with his hands and the jar "imprisoning" her. And she represents the beauty as well as the hope of the rose that the Beast will become human again.

I think I am going to change the title to "Captive Beauty" because the Beast never captured her, she willingly became his captive.

^ Thanks for explaining the meaning behind it in your own words; I got the gist of it, like how Belle and the rose represent hope to break the spell, but I like your explanation a lot!

I'm just now watching 20/20 and in Part 2, the storyboards weren't 100% clear, but it looked like the back of Maurice's head in one panel I could see, but the 20/20 host said that the song is for the Beauty; he either was in on the meetings changing it, or Disney let him know later on that they switched it to Belle? (And it said "for now, sir, eat up!")...I'm typing as I watch, and another storyboard also showed Maurice! The host is at the recording session for the re-record, and said the new lyrics were made due to moving the song up...even though we see Maurice in the storyboards, he hasn't said that Maurice changed to Belle...

Oh ok, I remember that was posted before and I remember your remarks about it as well. I was confused because your post said 30th Anniversary so I assumed you meant some vintage Snow White poster. In your version of this cover, would you keep the plain white background?

Haha, I don't blame you. I know how much you dislike that film.

Oooh ok very insightful. I didn't even think about Belle still being a prisoner at this point and you alluding to that in the bell jar. Great creative decision! Thanks for explaining :)

Thank you so much Amy! Thanks for saying you liked my explanation the way I worded it!

Thank you so much JeanGreyForever, and sorry about the 30th vs. 80th mix-up, I mix things up a lot. I would keep the white background. That was the main idea, that the cover would be white because she is white as snow. Thank you for what you said about my idea behind the poster!

That's all right, I should have realized myself you meant another anniversary when I couldn't find anything for the 30th one. Using the white background makes a lot of sense for that reason! And you're welcome!

Kinda OT but Question about the Belle's Magical World midquel film on Disney+ Canada:

Does it contain the Mrs. Potts' Party segment from the DVD version or is just like the original VHS release wit just the other 3 shorts? Cuz apparently Belle's Tales of Friendship, which had Mrs. Potts' Party on VHS sin't on Disney+

Posted in the Disney+ thread but I'll post it here as well in case this thread gets more traction.

I don't live in Canada so I can only tell you what I've experienced in the US but I imagine it's the same case. There was no Mrs. Potts' Party on Disney+ sadly, not even as an extra feature. I was hoping they would include it as well since I remember the DVD (which I own) did include it but that wasn't the case :(

Thank you so much for answering. Is the Beauty and the Beast Special Edition version with Human Again on there too?

You're welcome :) It's the theatrical edition of the film so NO Human Again sadly. Although I use theatrical loosely because it doesn't resemble it at all with the changed color scheme and the alterations like Belle's reflection in the window. It's really weird that Disney doesn't ever the Special Edition as well. Disney has something against extended editions it seems.

Disney Duster wrote:Escapay, I really don't like that Disney used false for the recording featurettes! Don't you feel kind of sick by it?
Not really. The featurette is called "The Recording Sessions," so pluralizing "session" and dubbing over with different audio kind of allows them to get away with it. Now, if they said, "This is raw, unedited footage from a recording session done between 1:30 and 1:45 pm" but we heard the final audio mix over the footage, that would be wrong. But presenting it in montage form kind of allows them to get away with it.

After all, the Aladdin Platinum had a "Recording Sessions" featurette for "A Whole New World" that at first glance could be mistaken as a singular session, but it's slickly edited together from multiple sessions, as evident by the fact that the same conductor who's guiding Brad and Lea for the vocal session is also in shots where he's instead conducting with just the orchestra, along with shots that either show Brad and Lea standing across from each other with just glass dividing them, versus actual footage of them in separate booths. The piece cuts 40 times from 17 unique camera angles*, but I doubt that meant they had 16 cameras in place and someone else working remotely from an editing bay doing real-time video cuts and fades throughout a single session. Especially since Brad, Lea, and the conductor can't exactly be in two places at once.

So for the Beauty and the Beast supplement to compress what's likely hours of recording session footage into a 3-minute montage that uses the final film's audio rather than the raw takes is par for the course.

Nice cover, by the way.

Oh...yes, I see your side. I didn't say it well, but I mean to say I didn't like that they used some "false imagery" as in GGI to cover the mouth. It just rubs me the wrong way. But, like I said, I get your view, too.
