Let's see the percentage of films that are sequels:
Pixar- 13 films . 3 sequels (Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Cars 2) - 23.07%
Dreamworks - 21 films. 6 sequels. (Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, Shrek Forever After, Madagascar 2, Madagascar 3, Kung Fu Panda 2) - 28.57%

Plus Pixar has Monsters University (ok, it's a prequel) and Finding Nemo 2 in the pipeline while Dreamworks has more original properties before HTTYD2 and KFP3.

Might as well have a look at other Western animation studios as well:
Aardman - 5 films. 0 sequels. 0%. None planned either though they do have some other Wallace and Gromit stuff released both before and after Wererabbit.

Blue Sky - 7 films. 3 sequels (Ice Age 2, Ice Age 3, Ice Age 4)- 42.86%. Plus Rio 2 is in production.

Sony- 3 films. 0 sequels. 0% though Cloudy 2 is in production.

Illumination - 3 films. 0 sequels. 0% though Despicable Me 2 is in production.

Looks like Blue Sky are especially bad at this with more than half their films being in the Ice Age franchise. Sony and Illumination have too few films for any trends to be identified. I believe Aardman can be trusted not to make sequels, though.

Also, percentage for WDAS: 51 films. 1 sequel (The Rescuers Down Under) - 1.96%. Granted, most of their films are adaptations which are less conducive towards sequels

I really liked Gothel.

I wish they were inbetweened. The drawings look very strong.

Rapunzel seems like Ariel 2.0 especially on the facial expressions.

Yeah, her resemblance to Ariel is just too much. Paint her hair red and you're done.

I, personally, am 100% happy with the CGI final result. But these tests are very interesting. Mother Gothel doesn't really do it for me in this design though. She looks like Jane/Jim Hawkin's mom. A bland, standard design.

Just as a side note; Tangled is still going strong in the Disney Store in the UK. Loads and loads of stock, with lots of children coming up and having a look. It still has its own section as well, which is cool. Tangled Ever After is obviously the main selling point, with the wedding everywhere.
Upsetting she has long hair on some of the wedding dolls though.

I know that a bunch of you were probably upset by the Blu-Ray and how there was no audio commentary on it. Well, the the head of the Animation Podcast decided to gather 23 of the animators from Tangled to rewatch the movie and do an "unofficial" commentary.

They mostly talk about animation and behind the scenes info, but they are interesting and I learned new stuff from it, particularly about animation and how a scene comes together. Besides, it's probably going to be the closest thing to an official commentary we're ever going to get in the near future anyway.

The face of Mother Gothel in those hand-drawn tests is more beautiful and more a reason for her to want to stay young forever. Also in these, as I have seen before, Rapunzel's puff sleeves on her dress are better, as well as more unique, they feel more like her own original design and just look better.

I just had an epiphany of sorts.

I don't know if you guys remember, but years ago, probably in the first rapunzel thread here I mentioned someone who had told me that early on in developing the style for Rapunzel they demoed some animation tests that were described as having a mixed media look to it. It had pencil outlines, charcoal shading, etc. Glen wanted to do the movie this way but was told it was going to be too costly and take too long. These tests were not shown to the general public. This person was disappointed that they didn't up going with that style for the final look. Does this technique sound familiar to anyone? Paperman!

For years Ive been wondering what those tests must have looked like. I was hoping it would end up on the Tangled blu ray but it didn't. But It just dawned on me that what this guy saw must have been the start of what would eventually be seen in Paperman. Disney must have started experimenting with this technique for (the then titled) Rapunzel. The fact that glen helped design these those characters makes even more sense now. How awesome would it have been to have the movie done this way?
