Still, the fact that Pluto, Goofy and especially Donald all became more popular than Mickey and stole the mouse's thunder by the end of the 1930's cannot be denied.

Also, I disagree with you on Pluto not being a superstar like Donald or Goofy. I feel that he did indeed become a superstar in his own right as well, as well as having a distinct personality of his own. And the fact that he even got to star in his own long-running series of shorts without Mickey further adds to the pup's superstar status as well.

I highly doubt today's artists would want to let Mickey fade into powerlessness again.

There is a difference between a star and a superstar. Sure, Pluto starred in his own theatrical series. But has Pluto ever been an iconic character that people can apply to their own lives? (People love Goofy for his How-to/sports stories, his suburban persona George Geef, his "goofy" laugh, or his famous holler.)

What would say, a casual cartoon fan remember about the Pluto character himself?

Well, the cartoon "Lend a Paw" won an Academy Award, so that should probably count for something, shouldn't it? Sure, the title card says it's a Mickey cartoon, but most official sources put it under Pluto's list of shorts, not Mickey's. The only cartoon that is officially part of both Mickey's and Pluto's respective filmographies is "Plutopia". Speaking of which, that is a great short, too. So Pluto has indeed appeared in some pretty worthwhile shorts.

Judging by some other clips from "Donald the Sailor" shown in the above video, it seems that this episode is going to be giving us a cameo appearance by Glut the Shark from "The Little Mermaid". At least I think it's Glut, since Glut has red eyes and so does the shark in the above video.

I don't think the eye color is enough to give it away. There have been sharks with red eyes in Disney before, such as, here again, in "No Sail":

I have to agree. The Pluto cartoons were the weakest of 40s/50s Disney shorts.

Well, there were 48 Pluto cartoons altogether. Until 2007, Goofy had the exact same amount of shorts. Did I mention that "Lend a Paw" won an Academy Award, too?
