Who knows how MPR will turn out. The only silver lining about his involvement is that he might cast Angela Lansbury somehow, perhaps as the Carlotta character or a character who fills a similar role to her, considering he worked with her on MPR and Mrs. Santa Claus (which I've never seen, unfortunately).
¨
To be honest part of me wants to cast Angela in EVERY upcoming disney movies

Onward. Creulla, live action Litte Mermiad, Soul, Dragon Empire, Webb's Snow white, Sword in the Stone just whatever they are making just give Lansbury a role ! She is a delight in everything and i'm really sacred the world wil lose her soon.
The enterimant industry will be a poorer place without Lansburry that's for sure !

McCarthy has portrayed different kinds of characters, even if she often goes with a similar type in her comedy films. I love her in general. I think the best idea so far to what she could be like as Ursula is her performance in the first half of
Identity Thief, except with less physical comedy. Her character wasn't the angry / cursing type like in other films of hers. That character was more calculating, willing to do anything. That's the McCarthy I picture blowing apart a wedding dress and crawling down the aisle to grab Ariel.

And I feel McCarthy has shown she can do more than just ridiculous, comic characters (although she's very good at them). I don't think she's the perfect Ursula imaginable, but much better than I would've ever expected after the Gaga rumors.
The one good thing about McCarthy being cast is I can see her being threatening once she gets the trident as far as throwing Ariel (and others) around like ragdolls. Although Octavia Spencer could probably do that, too, going by MA.

Yes, it will be.

Some people have mentioned that they'd like Katherine Langford for the role. I like her a lot although she's another actress I don't really see as Ariel, even with her brief stint as a redhead earlier this year. Can she even sing?

Really has little to do with this movie. But to day i recorded Poor Unfortunate Souls and some dialogue from that scene on my phone with me as ursula. Just to see if i would fit the role.
Not that i think i would evet get it. But i am an Amateur actor and i saw it as i way to test me skills.

Wow, she's a left-field choice. I thought for sure they'd pick a bigger name, but now I'll have to check her out in Grown-ish. Her voice is really pretty from that clip posted so thankfully this won't be an Emma Watson situation.

Yes, at least she can sing. I haven't seen anything she's in to know if she can act; I'll have to check out
Grown-ish some time now. Not sure if she'll be on par with Watson as Belle, Massoud as Aladdin, or Scott as Jasmine at this point, but at least there's actually the possibility of it.

A real shame Ariel won't look like Ariel though.

I wonder if that’s a fan edit or something Bailey herself commissioned, or if it was produced in-house for this announcement?

Yessss! Inspired choice! She can act, sing, and she’s so sweet and pleasant! Her character on grown-ish is my favorite actually. Looking forward to see who they cast as Eric.

It's old fan art a guy commissioned for his girlfriend.

Disney never even considered any non-Black actresses. It seems they were dead-set on a Black Ariel from the start which is unusual for them. None of the leads in previous live-action remakes were race-bend so why I wonder why Disney wanted to do this on this particular project.

I’m not really here to have a discussion about whether people who dislike changes to TLM are racist or not— that was Skyler Shuler, not me. That said, I like more representation on the big screen and see no issues with anyone’s casting based on race in this fairy tale.
Also, thedisneyspirit, can you explain what your signature means and where your comparisons come from? I am confused but sort of amused at the idea of Goliath and Duster singing “I Got You Babe.”
I still don't want the soundtrack of the little mermaid changed. It has a particular sound and it should stay that way.
Besides, in the other forums they see right through these decisions. they're not dense, And considering they're actual minorities, as in actual Latinos who live in Latin America and speak Spanish, I think their opinions are more valid than the ones from users of this website and other hellsites like Tumblr or twitter, who are privileged white Americans. In consideration, they liked a lot Coco and Moana. They just don't want to see the films they grew up liking "changed" in a way they feel Disney trying hard to pander to them, when they already liked those movies in their original forms. Lin Manuel Miranda is a "who?" right where they live, he's only really popular in the USA and Europe, They don't like the idea that their original Ariel, whom they liked a lot, was "bad" and that now they should like the one that "resembles them physically". It's patronizing. I'm a minority and saying I should prefer somebody like Moana over the white Belle is very patronizing and diminishes my interests and thoughts just down to my skin color. Shallow.

You're right. Belle looks like Belle. Aladdin and Jasmine look like Aladdin and Jasmine. Cinderella looks like Cinderella and Mowgli like Mowgli. Not Ariel though. I put it on Miranda. As soon as he came on, he acted like this was HIS movie lock, stock, and barrel. I can't f-ing stand him. At least I can be grateful it's not Zendaya, thank God, and that Halle is alright.
