Hey Teppy!
Oh. MY. FREAKIN. GOD.
It took me a minute to understand what you meant. But yes, the M hatter saying "it was" in that moment makes no sense! It would certainly make more sense in your revised version. I suspect it might be a mistake, and they didn't realize it till the scenes was already animated (if they realized at all).
And here is the thing, between the rabbit's final line and him getting picked up by the two characters, there is almost no time at all. They would have needed at least 1 or 2 second more of animation to insert the closeup of the Mad Hatter at that point. And as I'm sure you know, each second of animation costs a fortune to produce.
Funny enough, I grew up watching this movie in Spanish. And in the dub, the rabbit says something like "THIS is my watch?" and the Hatter replies in the closeup "it WAS!"... like they've killed it. So it made more sense.

Perhaps his "It was?" is in response to the rabbit calling his watch "poor."

DisneyDivinity.... yeah, that's how I've been understanding it for year, but it doesn't really make sense. Specially given the hatter's acting. I'm inclined to think this was a mistake.
Teppy: well... they both have black hair and big lower jaws... but that's kinda it. It's a bit of a stretch, but I know what you mean. ANd if anything, Fred looks like the queen... she came about way before him!

I don't know if it was intentional or a mistake but the fact that it doesn't make sense is very fitting for this film.

I agree! I just figured it was a "Hatter-ism" (you know, like a Doc-ism, they just say things differently!).

I was watching the Goldie Hawn 80th birthday salute on TCM last night and between Cactus Flower and Butterflies Are Free they had an ad for the 2026 TCM Classic Movie Festival in April. Imagine my surprise when they announced that a restored Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland will be featured marking its 75th Anniversary.
The clips they showed looked STUNNING!
Hope we get a new blue ray release!

Thank you for the information. I hope there's a 4K release as well.

Oh, that's wonderful news! I had heard rumors that they were working on a new restoration for the movie. I'm happy to hear it's true! I think this definitely means we'll get a new 4K release!

I'm glad they seem to be at work on more 4k transfers that are based on the original colors. Alice is definitely one that could use it the most after B&tB.

Eric Goldberg had said Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty were the next 4K restorations he wanted to see after he helped work on Cinderella and Snow White.

Interesting to know. So PP to follow soon, most likely. And then there's TENG that came out of left field--but good.

Great news! I hope they're going to remaster more. The closest anniversary is for Dumbo, and they always release these two one after the other. I'm so excited, especially because of the great results on both Snow White and Cinderella. I'm sure Sleeping Beauty is near as well, I can't imagine the clarity of it in 4K.
